2nd- there was a school out here, Mira Mesa, closed because of this. I guess there was a case and everyone freaked out. Just out of curiousity, how did this happen? Is it from the people eating infected pigs? I really don't know much about it, and to be honest, not going to do a whole lot of research on it when I have a lot of other things to do.
Long story short(as possible).

Every living mammal has it's own version of the flu. For these species their version affects them like ours generally affects us.

In Mexico a guy with a mild case of human flu worked with pigs. A pig had swine flu. That flu-ridden worker contracted the swine flu. Tis rarely happens but isn't impossible. Usually this is no big deal beyond the orginal affected. He/she may die but the disease rarely transfers from pigs so it's almost impossible for it to pass from the affected human to another. In this particular case because the worker already had the human flu the swine interacted with the swine flu to create a more virulent human flu that is passable. This is called reassortment. The viruses pass DNA back and forth and create new strains. This is why every year they have to come up with new flu shots...because every year there is a new flu virus that came from two or more flus reassorting in a host and then passed along.
So you don't have a problem with an open boarder when something like this is starting to spread? They shut down schools, goverment, and anything that draws a gathering of people but we have no problem letting them cross into the US to work everyday.
At the very least you should be able to spell the thing that you want closed down.

You would think that.

Closing boarders does very little in this day and age. Due to air travel, airborne viruses cannot be contained by border closings. It is an ineffective tactic against airborne viruses which is why the WHO stated their recommendation against this practice.

fyi--I am both a physician and an epidemiologist...

Yeah but you probably voted for Obama so your opinion is clearly politically influenced

I say we let people make up their own minds about what comments they want to ignore or not ignore.

So why haven't we shut down the border? We've confirmed it is from Mexico.

There's either something fishy going on or some major incompetence. Of course, if it's Napolitano's call...no real surprise.

We also do not have a DHS Secretary after 3+ months. Why not? Sure, Daschle was exposed to be a criminal, but why are we leaving this and so many other important Cabinet posts vacant so long?

Well played sir...

I found it interesting that the Republican governor of Texas threw out the idea of secession recently but has now asked the Feds for 35,000 vials of Tamiflu...

We don't have a DHS (or DHHS) Secretary? Someone should tell Kathleen Sebelius.

As to why we haven't shut down the border...if only there were a doctor, perhaps an epidemiologist, on this board who could give a reason. If only...

See my earlier post as to why border closings will not work in this situation.

An important thing to remember for everyone is that this particular strain of influenza is susceptible to two available drugs on the market: Tamiflu and Relenza. These deaths in Mexico are probably multifactorial-- but I imagine access to these two drugs was not available in most cases.
