I think that Haslett and Wade are very similar D-coordinators. They both try to put up alot of sacks/picks, but both give up alot of yards and points in the process. Wade is better at it though.
My arse, they are both past thier prime. Dallas has ranked at the bottom of D-turnovers every year since Swade got to Dallas
I don't think Haslett is That bad, Wade Philips is a good D coordinator, thats what got him the job in Dallas in the first place. I think Wade's defense is more conservative than Hasletts which is why I'd side with Haslett as my DC next year, now if a Ryan brother became our DC next year thats something else.
You really think Hasletts conservative soft zones taking this top 5-10 defense to dead last is less conservative than Wades? Sure buddy. The only RYAN ever wanted in any town is REX and that will never happen.

IDK who we should get yet, just let go of Haslett. The way we have plummetted IDK if he is even on the sidelines watching the game 3/4 of the time.
The "Phillips"

This system is not what people think of when they think of the 3-4, because the original 3-4 was/is strictly a 2-gap system.

In fact, look at the Denver "Orange Crush Defense" of the late 70's. It was run by Red Miller, and one of his assistants at the time was Coach Belichick. Belichick ended up in NE as we all know, while Fairbanks returned to college coaching in Colorado. Denver fans would thus be more likely than many fans to think of the 3-4 in terms of 2 gap, but you can still read the mistaken notion in many sports sites and publications.

The Phillips is named after "Bum Phillips", father of DAL head coach Wade Phillips, who formerly coached the Broncos as both a head coach and defensive coordinator. Bum learned under Paul "Bear" Bryant at A&M and had coached high school football well enough to break into the college ranks (not a common route). He was a defensive coordinator in SD, then in HOU (that's the Oilers for you young folks). He later was a head coach in HOU and later for NO.

Phillips was an innovator who turned the 3-4 upside down. His system is one-gap. The DL penetrates, and is charged with constant harrasment of the QB. The LBs are typically fast, and at least one of them will blitz on any given play.

The reason for the near constant 1-LB blitz is to account for the fact that the outnumbered DL is also relatively undersized and only one-gapping. However, the adjustments work out well. The OL never knows who the blitzer will be, or where he will come from. The Phillips is more aggressive that the Bullough. The school of thought for the Phillips 3-4 is the need to pressure against the QB to stop the pass threat, and this is done by varying who the "fourth rusher" (who is really a blitzer) is.

Add another blitzer in here and there, and the speedy/aggressive Phillips system is a threat to QBs, and attempts to get turnovers by slashing the time that a QB has to make decisions.

This is the system of choice for DAL, but also SD.

It is not the ideal system for SD in one sense. Denver (king of the offensive "zone block " system for runs) and oakland (newly switched to the zone block) are built to run over the 1 gap defenses, and they share the division with SD. SD adjusts for this by:

Re: wade phillips wow

I would say no to Phillips for 2 reasons.

First we need some continuity on this team and that starts with the coaching staff. Haslett needs at least another year probably two to get his type of players in here and to get everyone doing what they should on every play, (this is probably why he had 2 safeties so deep on so many plays against Philly)

Second, All of us are sick of us bringing in washed up Free Agent players to Washington, so why are we ready to bring in a washed up coach and move him to Defensive -Coordinator? He was shell of a man in Dallas this past year, he DOES NOT deal with adversity well, and why would the players respect him?

(Also f' anyone who would be associated with the cgirls)

Oh good, a pointless remedy to our situation. Its already been 500 years in NFL years, dating back to '91 from the last time our Skins were praised and from '99 when Snyder took over. Rome could have been built/destroyed, found a new architect/caesar and built/destroyed that too but beer would still be $8.

Its going to take years as many are aware enough to point out we cant undo Snyder-RATo in one season. This team is an eyesore at times and I get caught rubber-necking this wreck of a team but I wish so bad we could stop being the laughing stock of the league. The division is up for grabs every year if we could find/fix what ails us. What I tell myself every year is I wont buy into the hype/hope but football is in my bloodstream. I'll always be a skins fan but maybe next year I wont spend so much money until they really start giving back.

A quote from London Fletcher....
“The thing about this defense, you’re going to go through some growing pains in the first year,” linebacker London Fletcher said. “We’ve had some games where we’ve played some really good football and we’ve had some games where we’ve struggled.

“That’s to be expected, but it’s not accepted. We’re not just accepting where we are. We’re going to continue to work hard and continue to practice, focus and prepare in order to be successful on game day. We’re going to try to play the scheme a lot better.”
I guess continuity is not the key. We definitly should fire Haslett and bring in yet another coach. Heck it used to be every 3 or 4 yrs we changed HC's. We got that number down to 2 years. Might as well see if we can get that number down to less then a year.

Re: wade phillips wow

If the question is who a better defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips or Jim Haslett? It's no contest, Phillips is a superior DC than Haslett. I wouldn't even bother waiting until the end of the season. Bring him in right now as a consultant so he can be ready to take over when Haslett gets shit canned.
