He made some good comments. It sounded to me like the skins gave him the chance to re-work his deal for less money, and he decided to go for the money. He at least was honest with 106.7 the fan when he told them his passion for the game has not been the same since Joe Gibbs retired again. That speaks volumes when you think back to how his play seemed to drop off a cliff...it makes perfect sense that he wasnt playing with his heart in it, especially when all the major injuries started hampering him. He just couldnt play through the pain anymore. Injuries overtook him. Good Luck Portis. All hard feelings i had for you in the past are gone now. Thank you for being honest with the fans about what really happened. He has one year left in the NFL, IMO...I hope he goes out a winner. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
ST's death definitely took some of the wind out of his sails as well.
His first year under Zorn in '08 wasn't too shabby though, 342-1487-9 It's only been the last 2 years injuries have really caught up to him, starting with the concussion in '09. |

He's made mountains of cash as a Redskin, and he's publicly saying he's not into football like he used to be. There have been star RBs (Shaun Alexander comes to mind) who have gone from great to out of the league in a matter of a few seasons. CP can't seem to stay healthy anymore, he's on the wrong side of 30, and has a ton of mileage. He's not gonna get a big pay day from anyone. I could honestly see him hanging it up. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
He could retire... depends on what his expectations are. He's simply not going to find a starting job in this league carrying the ball 20 times a game. If he's ok with being a role player at a decent $$, I'm sure he can find work.

The guy was a beast in Seattle, and even though he had that 1 injury year, i felt for sure he would be back in the NFL. When we got him for that 1 season, i was shocked at how bad he looked. Its like his career ended overnight. And it did, in hindsight. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Yeah, Clinton Portis is no Shaun Alexander. He will get to play and get at least 10 to 15 carries a game...sorta like LT did with the Jets.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
If he's no longer going to be a Skin, I'd prefer he retires for selfish reasons. He's been my favorite Redskin since he joined the team and busted off that long TD on his first-ever run vs. the Bucs. He's the only current player jersey I own too.
For his salary that he's used to, he's not finding a job from a sane team. Al Davis is set at the RB position. I really think he could make a good 3rd-down and blocking back for us for another season or even two if the limited play can help his health. He looked GREAT last season before his groin tear, even running the ball. Then again, he could pull another Tomlinson and go take over the starter gig when everyone said he was washed up and broken-down and nothing more than a backup now. A lot of people (here too) are really trashing him as a horrible player and think he should be out of football. As Redskins fans, we should really appreciate what he's done in B&G. He's only a few yards behind the lehendary John Riggins as the top Redskins rusher of all time. He's 26th all time in league history at just shy of 10,000 yards, ahead of Earl Campbell, Jim Taylor, Herschel Walker, Jim Taylor, Roger Craig, Larry Csonka and other great RBs. He DID have some big plays for us. He even threw for 3 TDs. CP has been the BEST blocking back in the game in addition to being a more-than-capable runner. For years, he was all the offense had, being run into the ground with 300+ carries annually, especially under Gibbs. He topped 1500 AP yards 4 times as a Redskin. His career total is 11,941 yards from scrimmage. He's in the HOF discussion. re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I dont get why people hate on Portis. Yes there were some negatives, such as not practicing(nothing compared to Riggo's negatives), but he overall did some amazing things for us.
One of my favorite Skins. |
re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I guess this thread should be changed to "CP has been released". It's all over Twitter.
