I can see where you are comming from, but Coles still has an entire offseason to recover. And if we sign Burress we will be straight at that position. So why not draft a standout corner?

Coles had an entire offseason, last offseason to recover.

You can bet!

Based on previous drafts, the Redskins will take the BPA! It seems that was, and is always the case. So, now we need to look at Mock Drafts to determine who that BPA is! We will decide, and probably be right! More right than the Washtimes! The Washpost will be a great indicator, however, as the Draft approaches. Look at the numbers of Mocks, determine which name shows up the most at our spot, and viola! You have the BPA! This ain't Rocket Science!

Okay, first of all McCants is in Gibbs doghouse and I wouldn't be suprised to see him traded to a team with real WR problems for a low pick (another waste of money since he got a new roster or a bonus or some couple mil thing last year.)

Second of all, I feel our poor running game stemmed mainly from our poor passing game rather than blocking. Did you notice where they almost always played man coverage and put the safeties in the box? This is much easier to do when you never open up more to more than two WRs. We need to show different formation, including multiple receivers, and we do need to lead with a true fullback from time to time. I feel Portis will be fine if we can make teams respect the passing game. Not to mention with them looking to emphasive illegal contact we can get some huge gains and not even throw the ball (or throw it and get larger gains)!

Jacobs I feel will be a great receiver for us. He's first round talent gotten in the 2nd (thanks to a flu at the combine.) Spurrier took a lot of shit on this board for that pick, most everyone wanted Mike Doss, but Jacobs has great speed and strong hands. I think he'll making a push for that 2nd WR spot, especially if we draft a rookie.

I think a TE is crucial to the offense and creates matchup problems. Whoever mentioned Shockey, what has he done since his rookie year? Answer - nothing. However, TGon and THeap are great TEs that can cause matchup nightmares for opposing defenses. I wouldn't be upset if we drafted Miller because I certainly think he has the temperment he wants, but I think we have more important needs, and I don't think he's a beast like other top flight TEs.

KWII injury prone because someone breaks his leg early in his career? Don't count on it, he's still the best TE taken last year and the Browns will be centering their offense around him for years to come.

Coles still has a long way to go to get healthy again. I hope he can, but I agree with a previous poster that he could certainly start dropping in status. Unfortunately that massive contract doesn't get any smaller along with the role he plays on the team.

The nice things about speedy defenses is counters, reverses, etc can really open them up. See Super Bowl XVII, now I know Gibbs could sting the killer bees, let's hope he can bring that back. Portis has top class speed and can be a homerun threat. We need to get him one on one matchups with linebackers. I really feel spreading the field will help that. I think our line has more potential talent than we think, but we can't make big changes to the line and expect it to get better every year. I want a center, and then I want to leave them alone! If Dockery doesn't improve, replace him at some point.
You have all forgotten about McCants and Jacobs all they need is a shot. The problems were not at WR this year, though Gardner had his fair share.
Our receivers were a MAJOR problem this year. The other things you mentioned were also issues but our receivers were probably the weakest unit on the team this year.

i'd be stunned if he wasn't traded. Gibbs is never going to give a marginal talent playing time when the guy doesn't practice hard and contribute on special teams.

Consider also that we wouldn't have gotten Taylor most likely if we ahd taken Doss. I think I'd rather have Taylor and Jacobs than Doss and whatever other poopoo player we would have taken at that spot.

Miller would be a a core type guy for the Redskins. His talent level reminds me more of Heap than of Shockey or Gonzalez or Winslow. I'd say if he stays healthy Miller ends up being a top 5 TE in the right offense just like Heap.

Coles is simply average without his speed as we saw this year...we're in trouble if he doesn't improve.

I see people still saying we need to give McCants a chance, if he was inactive for 10 games last season what would make you think he's going to all of a sudden get a chance in 2005??

McCants has one foot out the door, I'd be shocked if he was back next year.

I'm a Jacobs supporter, I think he's got a great chance to be a solid contributor next year and he could be a very pleasant surprise for us.

Coles is still a quality WR and I can't see him falling to #3 on the depth chart anytime soon.

TheMalcolmConnection 02-01-2005 11:20 AM

I'm a Jacobs supporter as well. Even though I did say he's soft and stand by that, I do think you can be as soft as you want if no one can catch you.
Coles had an entire offseason, last offseason to recover.
Last offseason he had a new system to learn and new left-handed QB to get used to, and I remember reading that he didn't rest as much as he should have because of that. I bet the coaches make a serious effort to keep him from doing too much this offseason so that he can get as close to 100% as possible by the time the season starts.

offiss 02-01-2005 02:58 PM

I think that Gibb's feel's we need a real burner that can really scare a secondary, personally I think we need a #1 type WR to take some pressure off of Coles, I don't think Jacob's is looked at as a #2 more like a #3 which is fine but we need a dominant WR to open up the field Gardner was incapable of doing that even if he out jumped someone which was rare he doesn't scare opposing secondaries, that's why I think it will be either Edwards, or williamson, I still would like to see some film on both anyone know where we can get some highlight's of both?

I know people are hung up about his 40 time, but Mike says he's run a 4.43 on a fast track...

offiss 02-01-2005 11:14 PM

Well he talk's like a Gibb's guy, something tell's me he will work his was into the top 5 to 7 pick's it will be very interesting how these reciever's do in the combines and possibly shack up the top 10.
