So, you're saying there's a chance? :laughing-
Why would you move the best LT to RT?
Because we'd have a better LT. Would instantly be the best bookends in the NFL.

Crazy you may say but some say it was crazy how much we gave up for Griffin. Protect the investment.

Trent played both positions in college.

My guess is that TW would be insulted by a "demotion" to the right side. Why alienate our best lineman?

Grant Paulsen reporting that Carriker and Rocca are out. Contracts terminated. Should I have put this in the all encompassing thread? Excuse my ignorance, haven't posted in a while

Wasn't Jamison the RB Shanny was hiding on the PS? Expect to see him in Cleveland.

Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?

Something has to be done about right tackle: now version 6.0.

I prefer the idea of addressing the line in the draft, although I would wait about three weeks and then sign some offensive lineman who can help. The presence of guys like Tom Compton and Josh LeRibeus should mean that the Redskins can avoid spending real money at the position.

If Anthony Collins is going to sign in the first few days of free agency, I'll bend the rules a bit for him. He's a good player, although a bit of a slow developer.

I would expect to get multiple lineman and receivers in the draft, which means my free agency focal point is defense. Orakpo, Hall, and Baker coming back takes a nice chunk of the work out of the free agent shopping.

My main target is Brandon Spikes. I think safety is a bigger need, but Spikes is a better player than any of the available safeties. I also think he's somewhat undervalued as a player. He hasn't been a factor in coverage, but he also hasn't reached the age where linebackers typically become good coverage players.

I really wouldn't be shocked to see Josh Wilson back on a one year deal in the $1.5 million range. The Redskins need a nickel corner, and limiting Wilson's snaps could help with the injury issues he's had the last few years. He's okay out of the slot. Tackles well. I think he's better than he's given credit for, but he got targeted a lot down the stretch and offenses had a ton of success throwing at him. Wilson is actually a great fit for the defense, but the key is that the Redskins can develop Richard Crawford or Chase Minnifield enough to be serious consideration to play if Amerson or Hall misses time.

I like targeting Chris Clemons (Miami safety) to fill the free safety need on a 5 year deal. They really need two safeties, but I'm okay with getting one this year, adding one later in the draft to pair with Thomas and Rambo, and then waiting for the season to see if someone on the roster can handle the second safety. If Jose Gumbs is getting starts with Clemons, then you know you need to sign another guy in 2015.

Then I think they have to go above and beyond just filling holes, and get a good player on the defensive line that takes Bowen's roster spot. They have to get more production out of that position, and even though a salary structure where you are paying Bowen deadcap and another player to actually perform in that spot.

Luckily, the FA class is deep in just two spots: corner and defensive line. Lamarr Houston, Arthur Jones, Vance Walker, Randy Starks, Linval Joseph, Red Bryant, Tony McDaniel, Jason Hatcher can all help. I'd kick the tires on B.J. Raji or Cam Thomas if the price was right.

I'd try to get Sidney Rice coming off ACL reconstruction as the cherry on top of the offseason if the price is right. He's the best receiver on the market by a large margin, and his price will be discounted for his injury history.
Byrd turned down an offer from the bills that looked to be in the 30M/three year range. I expect he is looking for 35-40M in guarantees. Maybe not the most in the NFL, certainly the highest paid (substantially) safety.

Others think he is worth that. I have my doubts that we can't do fine with a substantially less costly option. Quite frankly, almost any reasonable amount spent will purchase an upgrade over last year's performance at the position.
I don't think the Redskins are going to end up a finalist on Byrd. He's going to be one of the three highest paid free agents, and I think the Redskins are going to intentionally stay away from that tier of contract.

They'll be in on Ward and Clemons at safety. Both will be costly, but cheaper than Byrd.

So true!

I prefer the idea of addressing the line in the draft, although I would wait about three weeks and then sign some offensive lineman who can help. The presence of guys like Tom Compton and Josh LeRibeus should mean that the Redskins can avoid spending real money at the position.

Agree. Time for Compton and LeRibeus to step up. I think LeRibeus can play but if he comes in overweight again I hope they cut his fat ass on the spot.

If Anthony Collins is going to sign in the first few days of free agency, I'll bend the rules a bit for him. He's a good player, although a bit of a slow developer.

I would target Collins. Clear upgrade. It would be good to have a player or two on offense who is familiar with Jay Gruden's system.

Spikes bothers me because I think he may be a knucklehead.

I really wouldn't be shocked to see Josh Wilson back on a one year deal in the $1.5 million range. The Redskins need a nickel corner, and limiting Wilson's snaps could help with the injury issues he's had the last few years. He's okay out of the slot. Tackles well. If Jose Gumbs is getting starts with Clemons, then you know you need to sign another guy in 2015.

Clemons is solid but not a playmaker. He would definitely do. What's your opinion of Mike Mitchell? I have high hopes for Thomas at SS.

Then I think they have to go above and beyond just filling holes, and get a good player on the defensive line that takes Bowen's roster spot. They have to get more production out of that position, and even though a salary structure where you are paying Bowen deadcap and another player to actually perform in that spot.

This is an excellent point! If the redskins want to get the full value out of re-signing Orakpo, then they need to improve the overall pass rush by getting more pressure from the inside.

I'd be happy to have any of these DE's.

I'd try to get Sidney Rice coming off ACL reconstruction as the cherry on top of the offseason if the price is right. He's the best receiver on the market by a large margin, and his price will be discounted for his injury history.

I'd be skeptical of this signing. When I think Sidney Rice, I think IR.
I think this is an excellent analysis. Good job!
My plan would be to avoid jumping into the pool during the initial wave. Focus on the middle tier of available players. Focus on good fits vs names.
This is the smart plan and the one Bruce will most likely go with. He is cheap after all.

Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?

Still take D Jackson over Spikes. Spikes is not a factor in the passing game is very nice way to say he is terrible at it, probably the determining reason why the Pats are letting him go. Probably gonna be cheaper than D Quell which is a plus.

Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?

We're not getting D'Qwell Jackson. He's visited 4 teams and is picking from one of them soon. We were not one one them.

He'll be a Dolphin, Colt, Bronco or Titan.

He must really love being in the AFC.

Yeah, Spikes is a two-down linebacker. Pass.

With a lineman who isn't as good.
Yeah, Spikes is a two-down linebacker. Pass.
Agreed. Keenan Robinson hasn't shown well enough that he can be counted on to come in on 3rd down and cover reliably. Spikes doesn't fit with us.
