Against San Fran, the depleted secondary did well. Against Indy, the depleted secondary looked awful. Raheem deserves both praise and blame for this.

The defense has not looked the same since DHall went down. It has not had the same tenacity and energy. DHall is the team's 2014 MVP, as his absence shows.

What you're seeing out there is confusion. And that is depressing. I'm really not sure how good or bad our CBs are--they just seem to be covering the wrong guys. So a new coach/scheme may do well with the young CBs. Obviously, we need help at safety.

Giving up all those picks for a major fail in RGIII is why we dont have a secondary..think about it that is 3 number one DB's …but most DB's don't sell a lot of jerseys...
I don't buy the "we're just not good enough." I understand that as an answer if we're getting beat. We're not getting beat, we're completely dropping people in coverage.

In regards to the DL question, it's kinda loaded. We've taken a lot of DEs high and transitioned them, somewhat poorly, to LBs. When Orakpo was a rookie he got almost all his sacks from the 4 point stance. We have some great DEs on this team, they just got moved to LB.
It's not loaded at all. They are two totally different positions with two totally different body types.

I think your post is right on the money but it wasn't what I was asking about.

Baltimore, NY Jets, Steelers all had bad ass down defensive lineman who pushed people around. Bad asses like these can mind their gaps while putting a center or guard into the QB.

I believe that the majority of teams who control the line of scrimmage win more games than they lose.

Heard on the Sports Fix on 980 today Chris Russel say we spent the smallest percentage of salary cap on secondary in the league.

I heard this in passing and not 100% sure I heard it correctly. Also, not sure how it is calculated. (with or without injuries)

Please correct me if this isn't accurate.
I think it depends on what position he plays. I think he's a mediocre standup LB but an excellent all-around DE. If he goes to a 4-3 team he'll have a big year - in my opinion.

I'm still sad we didn't go after Schwartz after he was fired by the Lions. Great defensive mind. Just look at what he's doing in Buffalo.
Wouldn't have minded seeing Schwartz come here and go back to the 4-3. He's got the horses on the d-line in Buffalo.

That bothers me much less than the inability to develop Rambo, Crawford, Thomas, Minnifield (and maybe even Amerson), or the inability to identify the lack of talent/potential in those guys.

Hopefully, our........next Defensive staff will recognize these inadequacies and act accordingly.

Is it the players?

Ryan Clark:
"You’re not supposed to be able to sleep on Sunday nights when it goes like this – I don’t,” he said. “But until everybody feels that way, until that’s the way we approach work, we approach everything, it’s gonna keep happening. And then if it continues to happen, it’ll be a new group of guys in here next year from top down.”

Shawn Springs:
“And then Fleener outruns Amerson to the endzone. I mean, I’m just like, that’s effort. That’s not coaching, that has nothing to do with Raheem Morris, that has nothing to do with [Jim] Haslett’s play calls. If you can’t run down the tight end, please do not play in the NFL if you’re a cornerback.

In fairness, Crawford, Thomas and Minnifield all had their development stunted by injury. based solely on talent, both Thomas and Minnifield were considered high-mid rounder’s going into the draft. Rambo was always going to be a boom or bust prospect though. Same as Amerson, who sadly now seems to be regressing at an alarming rate. With that said however, you’re prob right that once again the inability to either evaluate or develop talent is all too apparent.

Is it also worth questioning at this stage then the pressure up top, or lack of? I know it doesn’t account for receivers being left wide open, but I’m genuinely eager to find out (due to rarely getting seeing games) where we are right now going forward, and if investing the necessary resources to the defensive front is even more of a priority than the secondary?

Its effort sure, but both those coaches still suck.

Re: Blown Coverages - Who do we blame?!

I have a big problem with way our defensive backfield plays zone defense. I am so tired of seeing our defenders release a receiver at the most critical time of the play to cover an empty area (zone). During a typical pass play the Qb releases the ball around the 3 to 6 second mark.
When playing zone a defender should never release defender after 4 seconds, after 4 seconds coverage should revert to man coverage, because the Qb is about to throw it or already has. Our defenders prioritize more covering the field then covering a receiver. That goes against everything I have ever been taught in sports.
Even when I played organized basketball or soccer you start out playing zone but you do not release a guy unless another defender is there to take him. That especially applies the closer you are to your own goal that you are defending. That is basic stuff our team does not do. Why? Coaching or player that do not get it? Or both?

To me. It seems like we dont practice enough on critical moments. Seems we are alwats being hit with combination routes on the outside and back shoulder fades.

I wonder why we dont work on the back shoulder fade in practice. I mean thats perfect play for developing trust in your WRs and help the DBs defend it.

Some of the best run this route and throw it on third down a lot. I saw Pierre do it at Indy. He did it here a few times. RG3 threw one to Moss for a TD against Dallas 2 years ago. Just seems like "Talent" routes is what i call them. We dont run them.
