Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
run-blitzes make their way to the QB by filling in the running lanes, and pretty much takes away the RB draw up the middle. slants and dump offs in the vacuum of the blitzer is how you get past them. the draw is good for outside blitzes and delayed tosses are good when it's the entire house coming.
You're right, I should have said blitz and not run blitz. |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
only second game in Gibbs's career that Burns is supposed to call in the plays. who know what really goes on, especially that late in that game. should we edit the thread name to "Will Gibbs/Burns Open Up the Offense Now?"
Allow me to go really radical here.....and have everyone disagree. I think ole Musgrave should be calling the plays from the booth and burns should be showing Brunell the formation prints as the game goes. Atleast Bill is in touch with modern day offense. I know this is not going to happen but I would like to see Bill talk to the QB directly instead of Gibbs....... |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
That's like saying you don't run a draw when there's a run blitz coming... that's exactly when you run it and again if you can execute it properly you can pop off a big gain and make a D think twice about being so aggressive.
If there's a heavy blitz coming you're probably not going to have time to go deep. That's where you need a quick hitting play. I'm not a huge fan of the WR screen but it serves it's purpose if properly executed, which we seem to have a problem with for some reason. I'd actually like to see more RB screens.
I have to agree with skinscane on this one, putting 8 men in the box doesn't mean their blitzing, what it does mean is they are ready for anything that happens around the line of scrimmage, even if they do blitz they have to many players in the box for screens and draws to be effective. |

you realize that musgrave was run out of his last job for being too ultra conservative in his play calling right? |
you realize that musgrave was run out of his last job for being too ultra conservative in his play calling right?
I don't think it was because of too conservative of an approach?? I'd have to question that. But a lot of people have been run out of a job because of the circumstances. I wouldn't call Jacksonville the most dynamic of offenses in the league either. I can recall a certain coach of the patriots being run out of cleveland too. I just said it was radical man.....not reality. I would like to give Bill that chance though. |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
Look--you have to remember that sometimes the play executed is not the first option on the play called. Sometimes defenses take away your primary, and you've got to check down. My feeling is that the conservatism is a combination of play-calling, situations (close games, long yardage, our good defense), AND the coaching of the QBs. I think Brunnell especially was told: DO NOT TURN THE BALL OVER. Take what the D gives you, be efficient, and move the ball. So when a long ball wasn't open (even if it was called), he checked down. Late in the game, he was more apt to take a risk. But they also (apparently) got the coverage they wanted late--don't know if it was the first time in the game, but that's what they were looking for. Also, everyone seems to forget the ball that Brunnell undertrew early to Moss (who was five yards behind the D). That's not bad playcalling, that's a bad throw.
So, what to do? One, say to Brunnell: go ahead and sling it a few more times. Two, call more plays that expoit these match ups. HOw about a FIRST DOWN PASS, maybe off of playaction? Three, don't make penalites on the O-line, block the blitz (way too many sacks and hurries), and establish the run. When you are in 3rd and 5, the safeties have to come up to stop the short route. Then you can get behind them. And if they cheat the run, likewise. So I think it's a combination of things here. Hopefully, we'll keep burning folks deep, and everything else will open up. But don't forget that we do have a good D and a good running game. Those things need to be exploited as well. PS I don't mind the WR screen... when it works!!! |

The reason I feel this is correct for the Redskins is because we do not have an element of surprise. If for one play the other team loads the line, then you run a screen, mabye you catch them off guard. But against the Skins they put 8 in the box on everyplay until we make them back off. So if you run a screen everyone is already close and they will never get any yards. Hopefully we can run a couple more deep plays and keep seatle on their toes and let portis rip off 200 yards. |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
What we did out of desperation the last four minutes Monday night is what we need to do more of in order to get that 8th man to play a little more honest. Teams played us close to the line all last year and will continue to do so until we make them pay. We need to attempt more deep shots whether we complete them or not, they must respect the fact we will go deep taking some of the pressure off the running game. I would also like to see more quick hitting plays from a three step drop. Sometimes it seems our basic pass plays take too long to develop, and the way teams blitz now it seem's we're always out of rythm.
I know, they should have put PR in the backfield for a dive play off right guard. He probably would have run someone over. ;)
Hell yeah LOL.....mad funny. |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
You dont run a screen when there is 8 people up from and the safties creeping in. Thats when you throw it deep or a quick slant before the rush gets there. Then once they play back you can run it, but they dont ever play us back.
I don't think running a screen can just be ruled out. MAny teams use the screen to counter over pursuit including 8 men in the box. Please look at any New Englang vicyory last year they use short screens constantly when they feel teams are cheating with upfield pressure. I know comparing us to them is not realistic but I don't think we as a team should be setting limitations. Instead as I see it our gameplan needs to be busted wide open. I believe we have the talent at every position to do whatever we want, we just haven't given them the right plan yet. |
Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
yeah but the RB screen that the Pats use and a WR screen are two different beasts entirely. like Matty said, we never run a proper RB screen and we should.

Yeah they really are different but I don't want these type of plays out of the playbook but rather improved and used effectively. We do alot of things shittily on offense but it doesn't mean we should only do the things we do really well. |

what things on offense do we do really well? :joke: honestly connect some of the those passes Santana hopefully inspired and i think our offense would be unstoppable. |

Re: Will Gibbs Open Up the Offense Now?
Regarding the screen pass, Gibbs probably still hates it because of the ill-fated 'Rocket Screen' picked of by the Raiders and returned for a touchdown by Jack Squrek in the Superbowl the Redskins lost. Then again he did put in the shotgun this year, so who knows.
