Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
This is interesting that's for sure. I honestly don't know much about Schwartz... but it is refreshing that Snyder is going outside the box a bit (for him at least) and looking at candidates that aren't the typical big names he's gone after in the past.
Perhaps he really has learned some patience and would like to hire a guy that can be around for a while... or maybe he just wants a coach in place that's not going to want a piece of the front office decision making process.
I'm sure that probably has a lot to do with it as well. I agree though. People have been saying we need a young guy, and here's a guy that could be with us for years to come. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
I still think we're hanging onto wishful thinking here when it comes to Gregg Williams. All indications are that Schwartz is here as a candidate for the head coach job. Why hasn't GW gotten the first look? Either because Danny doesn't think he's HC material, or maybe it's a Marty Schottenheimer power struggle in which GW wants too much power, who the hell knows. Either way though, this does not look like some coy scheme to get Schwartz here as an assistant to GW.
I mean, think about it from Schwartz's perspective. Why would he jump to become an assistant here when he's already interviewed at Baltimore, is a candidate in Atlanta and Miami, and already has a great assistant job working for Jeff Fisher? There's just way too much wishful thinking going on on these boards. I'm sorry guys, it's time to face it, GW will not be the new head coach. In fact, he probably won't be a Redskin coach at all next season. |

I am starting to believe that Jim Schwartz is the next head coach of the Washington Redskins. Surprisingly enough, I somehow think that's a good thing. But, I might be just falling for the hype. |

I am thinking the samething. Maybe Gregg Williams doesn't want the head coaching job. Maybe he is the one who suggested Schwartz? |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Really the only thing that concerns me about hiring Jim Schwartz is that it still keeps wide open the possibility that Cowher is the coach in 2009. You give Schwartz a relatively cheap contract, after one year you say "Hey, maybe you're not cut out for this..." and then along comes Cowher.
I sure hope not. I say hire Schwartz and buckle up for a long ride. |

Yeah I saw it, thanks very much. I'm still having trouble putting all the pieces together though. It just doesn't add up. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Right. Williams may not have the energy after dealing with his Taylor's death. He may be looking for a little break from coaching.
|
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
I don't think Danny will get hung up over giving a coach power to pick the players. Any coach that comes in, whether it's Schwartz, GW, or Cowher, Danny is going to demand that the coach be the third leg of the tripod. The triumverate of Danny, Vinny and Coach X is going to stay in place, because Danny says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, we've done a good job there." Hell, Gibbs was part of the triumverate. Hell, Danny sent Marty packing because he demanded to have 100% say. Danny won't give on that, no way no how.
If GW is demanding ultimate power on players, Danny won't even consider him. There will be no games to play. Danny will find the best coach possible who will become part of the triumverate. And all indications are he thinks Schwartz is more qualified to become the Head Coach and Third Leg. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Anybody else bothered by the fact that we may hire the first guy we interview? If this is a process, why jump to any action before you know what and who are out there. I'm sorry, but you don't marry the first girl you f...k and you don't hire the first person you interview. Just my opinion.

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Lets not get to excited people. I hadn't even heard Schwartz being in the mix for the job before today. There is absolutely nobody on this site that really has a clue what's going on behind closed doors, other than the guy was here for an interview. Thats it.
Stay tuned, I think we will know fairly soon. Dan and patience don't mix all that well. It wouldn't surprise me if we know who our new head coach is in the next few days. |

Though the report Matty posted said Schwartz "blew them away", I don't think Danny has committed himself to it yet. According to JLC, there are still rumblings about Jim Caldwell from Indy and Jim Mora from Seattle. I'm sure Danny will take his time. He can afford to, he knows his team is the best available head coaching vacancy in the league right now. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
If we interview 3 or 4 more people and then decide on Schwartz, I'm fine with it. My concern is if we say we're going to go through this "process" and then end it after one interview, that would piss me off.

I think if I ever saw Jim Mora as head coach, I would spontaneously start to bleed from every orifice ala Conan O'Brien on SNL |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Jim Caldwell and Jim Mora Jr. could get promoted to HC of their current teams, if the rumors about Holmgren and Dungy retiring are true.

Well hush little doggie because we can't do that anyway. We have to interview at least one minority candidate. No news source said we were going to hire Schwartz. One said he "blew us away" and is now a frontrunner. But that doesn't mean the race is over. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
What did Jim Mora Jr ever do that badly as a head coach other than an innocuous comment on a radio program about coaching in his home state?

I just don't think he would be a good fit...he ran a team with too many divas and thugs down in Atlanta...again...in my opinion |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
I'm not saying he should be our coach, but I did think he got ran out of town a little prematurely. In retrospect, you can't argue that ATL wouldn't have been better off keeping Mora.

LOL You know I'm kind of torn as to what I want. For salary cap reasons, we need a guy who will keep the roster intact and employ the players we have, which probably means it makes most sense to retain a lot of the existing staff. That makes GW the best choice. But then if Gibbs is involved in the decision, and is telling Danny that GW is no good, then I definitely trust Gibbs' judgment when it comes to evaluating coaches. If there's ONE thing Joe Gibbs is good at, it's surrounding himself with people who'll help him succeed. If he thinks GW is simply a good coordinator, then I am on board. Likewise, if Gibbs endorses Schwartz (or anyone else for that matter) as a good and complete leader, then I'm good with the decision, even if it means gutting the current roster and rebuilding. But if Gibbs isn't involved, and Snyder's just doing whatever the hell he wants, then I'll be upset. If Gibbs is telling him to hire GW, and he's saying nah screw that, I'll be ever so pissed. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Gibbs is definitely involved, I can assure you of that.
Maybe Williams has the same problem that Russ Grimm allegedly has, he just gives awful interviews. |
Any minority candidate fills the Rooney Rule.
Just to throw a curve into this mishuggah situation, maybe Schwartz is Jewish, and thereby fits the Rooney rule as a minority. We are but 2% of the population, you know. And god knows, there have been few enough of us as head coaches in the NFL--Marv Levy comes to mind. But maybe Schwartz is not Jewish. ;) |

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
It's kind of crazy how for the past five coaching changes, all of us would think in the back of our minds "How about bringing Joe Gibbs back?" and then he finally did come back (much to our shock).
But now we can't think that anymore. Anyhow, I'd be cool with Schwartz |

If we hire this clown how is he going to walk into a room and command respect of the guys on this team? It's just not going to happen. The guys respect Greg. The guys respect Greg Blache. This is the problem I have with Danny Boy. He wants to win so badly. He'll spend all kinds of money on coaches and signing bonuses. But he won't spend it on the best GM and the best coach for the situation. Again he wants to win but he has no clue how to. |
Re: May the Schwartz be with you?
Have any players on the offensive side of the ball proclaimed their respect for Williams?
Anyhow, I still think there's just one small (not so small?) issue keeping Williams from getting the job. If that's resolved it's his job. It not, Schwartz is one of the better (best?) alternatives. Snyder could pick Jesus himself to coach and people would complain that he didn't hire God as his GM |
