We should sign Lechler and not worry about a punter for many years.

lechler will probably be the most expensive punter ever but ya I agree with that, and if shayne graham is a free agent maybe him too, or we could draft like a pat macaffee or louie sakoda...but ya the last time we drafted a "Good" punter he's ahh...no where now

This is one of the those times where I'm OK paying a little bit of extra cash for a punter. PROVEN commodity and punters typically don't cost that much cash.

For what its worth, JLCs sources indicated we werent going to do much to address the kicking situation. Everthing JLC has written indicates we have a lot of needs, but Snyders having hard times financially and we're not going to do much to address our needs this offseason.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

I am not too big on Peppers after the JT saga. Our speedy pass rushing ends cannot touch the QB when the pocket is intact and can step back into the pocket and make their throws. Montgomery and Golston are good rotational DTs that can stop the run but ineffective in pushing back the pocket. Griffin IMO is the only DT we've got that can, at times, penetrate the middle when he is healthy enough. If anything we should bring back Griff (though injury prone and expensive) if he takes a paycut. Look for a FA DT that can rush the pocket like Jovan Hayes (sp) or Tank Johnson dare I say it, to help the interior and then maybe our current ends can get more sacks.

Jordan Gross is likely to be franchised but he will command big bucks if he hits FA, something hopefully the Skins are staying away from, according to JLConfora. I'd prefer to draft an OT (big 4 @ 13 or trade down for William Beatty or Eben Britton). Veron Carey is one 'not so pricey' option in FA. Its better to build the lines this year and next via draft while bringing down our cap room by gradually releasing the non performing vets that are eating up our cap instead of adding more potential candidates to it. Our current roster needs upgrading in the next 2 years at least, so making big splashes for Peppers or Gross doesn't make sense if we do not look like we will in the SB next year.

Leigh Bodden was released by the Lions. He's got good hands and is a decent man corner. Sign him up and send Carlos packing.(in exchange for some picks of course)

I would offer him a contract. Don't know what the market would be like for his services though.

He had a really rough year, but might be a better cover guy than Hall (assuming this year wasn't indicative of a decline). Not that Blache would ever play him or anything.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

I'd like to see Bodden in a Skins uniform. I think he struggled in Detroit because of the zone coverage scheme, and of course the fact, Detroit's D as a whole was horrible. His INTs dropped, but his pass deflections were still pretty good, and he forced 3 fumbles. He probably won't command a lot of money because he's only had one solid year, so that's good. He's still young, and I think he could be a decent #2 corner and definitely a good nickel corner.

He went to Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, and you know how the Skins love local guys. Sign him up.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

Leigh Bodden is tall and physical. Good cover skills but Rogers IMO is better. One thing I like about this year FA is the depth in CBs, we can get some good CBs like Dunta as nickel but D Hall and C Rogers should be our starters.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

I'd like Bodden too... That way we can cut springs, save some cash, maybe even cut Smoot to save more money, draft a corner have hall, rogers, bodden as a nickle and I guess give tryon a shot...
I don't really understand y people want carlos gone soo badly, he's young talent and better than Smoot IMO...

Re: 2009 Free Agents

I think people want Carlos gone because of the cost involved. He's going to cost a lot of money to keep around here. He's great in run support and coverage for the most part, but if you're going to pay a guy top end money, it shouldn't be someone who doesn't get many INTs and offenses target.

IMO Boden can't hold Rogers jock. Rogers is worth a big contract and he should get it.

I wouldn't say that, the guy was traded for Shaun Rogers and was pretty solid with the Browns before he went shitty with the Lions.

If we can't work out something with Hall and/or Rogers I'd say talk to Bodden.. he could be a longer term replacement for smoot, plus who knows how much longer springs will be here

Re: 2009 Free Agents
I personally would sign Rogers and Boden and let Hall find another sucker team.
I'd be more inclined to do that as Rogers can at least shut number 1 corners down.. he might not pull 6 picks a year but he stops way more potential TDs

Rogers needs incentives in his contract to hold onto the ball.. you can't expect him to grab everyone he defends but when it's right there and he's actually attempting to catch it, he should more often than that.

That would be a dream coming true, however I don't think we need to draft a corner.. We have needs other positions to fill in.. Our top priorities should be resign Hall (even though I'm still not sold on him but he's our best option) and extend Rogers.. The idea of shopping Rogers around is absolutely ridiculous (IMO), I really hope Redskins does not deal him away.. He can, hands down, shut #1 receivers.. Sure, he got stoned hands and can't catch balls, but he doesn't give up lot of TDs.. I am aware of our cap situation, but we have had enough of those aged players.. Get rid of them, or shop them around for like 6th or 7th round , if possible? Only aged players I would like to retain is Griffin, Thomas, and possibly JT (only if he's willing to take pay cut).. Give some of the money to those 2 kids, and offer Bodden a deal (although I think Bodden would be asking for little high price)..

At last, if it's possible - restructure with some players, leave little enough money in cap for next year to resign Chris Horton (and maybe Moore?) next year if they continue to flourish.. We, then would have a great secondary for years to come..

BigHairedAristocrat 02-10-2009 10:32 AM

Re: 2009 Free Agents

Bodden is no where near the corner that Carlos Rogers or Springs is. However, he is a clear upgrade over Smoot. At this point, i'm doubtful we resign Hall and its highly unlikely that we retain Springs at his salary. Considering we may be "forced" to trade Rogers, too and we have a great deal of uncertainty at the corner position. We would be wise to sign Bodden ASAP. he certainly would be a good value pickup and in the worst case scenario, he could end up being our starter on opening day.

I dunno? Who?

I don't think Carlos is as good or as bad as he's sounding on here. He does have stone hands, but that did amount to 24 pass deflections. That's pretty stellar, but he's no game changer. What I don't like about him is whenever offenses seem to target him, he always seems to give up huge pass interference penalties. I guess that's okay, right? At least he's not giving up TDs. But all things considered, I don't think he'll ever be a good #1 CB, so he shouldn't get top tier CB money. If we're not going to be able to re-sign him, unfortunately we probably should see what we could get for him now.

Why do you say that SS. I admittedly have not read the whole thread, but Bodden listed Washington as one of, if not his top team on NFL radio. He grew up around here apparently.

yeah, he's a local kid so sure the Skins are a possibility

Texans I kind of just threw in there

Jags just happened to name his position coach with the Browns, Mel Tucker (who loves Bodden and vice-versa) as their new defensive coordinator a couple of weeks ago

Gross is probably going to get the franchise tag, since it seems like the Panthers are going to let Peppers walk. Pundits are talking about possibly having a QB change in Carolina, so they are going to need to protect whoever QBs for them. Even if it is Delhomme again, he's no spring chicken and needs protection.

Haynesworth, period point blank , then draft 3 o-linemen , and a RB Haynesworth will improve the defense in all area's just from being a force in the middle...
I would rather have Haynesworth. He's younger and he fills a need.
Whatever team signs Haynesworth will be making one of the biggest mistakes in the history of free agency. Haynesworth will not be THAT young when the season starts. hes only got another 4-5 years of production similar to what weve seen the past two years, but theres no garauntee he will continue to perform at a high level. by all appearances, hes been motivated soley by the prospect of a big payday. Haynesworth wants to be the highest paid defensive player in league history. whoever pays him that kind of money for the maximum potential of another 4-5 years of performance similar to what he did in 2007 and 2008 is an idiot.

Id rather have Chad Johnson buy the team and name us the Washington Ocho Cincos than have us bring Haynesworth here.

MTK 02-11-2009 03:38 PM

Re: 2009 Free Agents

4-5 years is an eternity in the NFL, hell most careers don't last that long. Yeah Haynesworth is going to command top dollar and personally I wouldn't want to sink that into him, but if he keeps playing at his current level for another 4-5 years someone is going to be getting a heck of a player. At the start of the season he will be 28, in the prime of his career.
