Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
For a team that wants to get younger a 30 yo safety isn't going to do it. Having said that I hope he is as good as you lot hope and his best years are ahead of him. I wouldn't mind seeing him and Moore out there on the field along with Landry.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
There is a difference in going to the probowl and being an allpro though. I don't think Taylor was ever an allpro, however he only played 3 1/2 seasons

What, a strong safety, free safety and....middle safety? :D I guess we're switching to the 3-3 defense this year. Or, are we just cutting Carlos and letting D-Hall be the only CB on the field? |

You can still get younger while adding vets. He fills an immediate need. We're simply not going to be able to fill all our needs through the draft alone. Free agency is part of the puzzle too. |

That's how the pro-bowl should be played and it was good to see at least one player bringing the passion. |

The great thing about this is no draft picks are being used to acquire this player. I have more issues with us trading than I do with FA signings. |

Agreed, when our young players aren't working out or just aren't starter-quality (like Kareem Moore and a couple of unnamed WRs), it is more important to put someone competent in their place. "Going younger" is an overrated catch phrase. Sure, we don't want to load up with vets about to retire like we did in the Bruce Smith/Deion Sanders experiment, but the difference in average age from the youngest to the oldest teams in the league is less than 2 years (it was last time I saw the stat). There are key positions you want longevity out of, like left tackle...but overall, ability is more important than age. |

Amen to that. Especially since Atogwe is only 2 years removed from being the #6 overall "INT catcher" (very technical term) followed by the #2 in that category in 07 and 08. I don't see why anyone would complain to a FA signing as long as they dont get an @$$load of guaranteed money like Haynesworthless. I love this move. If we could get Barrett Ruud now I would be bouncing off the walls. MSW wouldn't be too bad either, I guess.... :) |

Interesting bit:
SalaryCap101 J.I. Halsell by kjohnsoncsn Atogwe gets no $ prior to a potential lockout. His 6.5M roster bonus would be earned after a lockout at the commencement of '11 league year. 1 hour ago
BA sure seems to be a top notch contract guy. |

We face the eagle's twice and you can bet your ass Landry will be shadowing Vick while Moore/Atogwe play SS/FS. Also, you will see Moore on the field covering TEs against the Pats and Cowboys. There will be plenty of opportunities for all 3 to be on the field! |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Is the team keeping Kemo or do they consider him a non-factor and letting him walk? Just thinking about his injury - it might take a solid season (2010) playing on his ankle to accelerate full recovery. Resting it could make all the difference for 2011 season.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I like what I see in the highlights. This guy isn't just playing on instinct. Most of those ints are from a combination of route recognition and watching the QB. Very likely they're coming from film study as well. Some of these look like a quick diagnosis and a very easy pick because he knows where the ball is going.
Worst case scenario (given that he's healthy) is that we end up with a good number of picks/fumbles and a good number of blown coverages a la D. Hall. Best case scenario is that we just signed another London Fletcher type to play free safety. I'll concur that this is a reasonable contract for this guy and filling holes with FAs that can still play that don't cost us picks is fine by me. |

He was supposed to be let go yesterday I thought. Not sure why he wasn't. I don't think he's in their plans though |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
CB Barnes, FS Otogwe, SS Landry, CB Hall as our starting secondary.
Resign Buchannon as our nickel, and keep Moore as our backup safety. Wouldnt have to worry about the secondary in the draft which leaves more picks available for other positions on the defense. Maybe need to sign a few undrafted DBs to compete for a roster spot. Im thinking Rogers will be too expensive to resign. Would love for Von Miller to fall to us, but Quinn or Aldon Smith wouldnt be bad choices either. D could really improve if we can get a good outside rusher opposite of Rak daddy along with already improved secondary. |

The last 2 or 3 games he played in he didn't do that bad. NT is a really big concern if we don't get Bryant some first string help. Luckily, this draft has a few good candidates that can play the nose. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
So, given that:
1- your pro's (proven player, apparent good contract) aren't enough for you to have a positive response, 2- the team has more pressing needs (at least NT and QB) that have to be addressed in the draft How should the team have addressed the FS spot in your opinion? or are you saying that you are good with Doughty/Moore until a high draft pick could be used for the position.
IMO go get a guy in the later rounds. Find a diamond in the rough. Coach up Moore and get him healthy. That's how I'd address it. Chasing a 30 year old safety when you're not contending for a Super Bowl makes 0 sense. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
OJ and Hasslett work well together. OJ is a proven NFL caliber FS, that is talented and athletic and produces. He plays the QB position of the secondary. You entrust that to Kareem Moore? I do not. Let Kareem learn and develop under OJ. I still feel Kareem is going to a good FS one day. He is not ready to lead at this time. OJ is ready to lead.
The FS position is too important to leave to a bunch of question mark type players. |

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
So is OJA set on a Number?
|
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Great signing. Glad he didn't try to get ST jersey #. He's 30 which is a bit risky IMO. My friend lives in St. Louis and is a die-hard rams fan and said he's a ballhawk who just didn't fit Spag's scheme last year which was why his numbers were down a bit, but has improved his tackling each year he's been in the league. Hopefully we can get 3-4 solid years from him.

I just don't agree with signing a 30 year old safety on a bad team. OJ is not the long term solution IMO. But he's an upgrade so it is what it is. |

So we are not to sign any players near 30? Yes, in a perfect world you want a young team. But the world is not perfect and no team is perfect in selecting players. Fielding some veterans mixed in with youth is not a bad thing. In fact the veterans provide leadership and teach the young guys how to play in the NFL. A larger percentage of college football players are NOT ready to play in the NFL. That is real. You talk about finding a diamond n the rough in the later rounds. That is easier said then done. If it were easy you would be a GM in the NFL. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Yeah and Atogwe has the third best number of turnovers since he joined the league. Definate upgrade. Imagine him with Landry. Great pick up.
|
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Good move, not great, but good. It's a solid start and with the addition of a rush backer and a NT, we could see a great improvement in our defense. That's not to say that there won't be more growing pains, but we should see a better d. Hell, Atogwe can also provide the leadership and mentoring to help other guys in the secondary. The impact guys like him and Fletcher can have on a defense with just their football smarts can often outweigh any perceived loss in athletic ability.
|
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Yes NT has no good players in FA that aren't ancient. OLB seems to me like Shannahan wants to go young and compliment Orakapo. So they both seem to be draft picks.

It's ok to pick up older players if your not trading away picks to get them. As long as we keep our picks we will begin to get younger naturally. So plugging in older guys that still have the fire an we don't over pay isn't a bad thing while we draft our asses off. The problem was our past poor judgment when selecting these vets, then over paying them and them not giving a damn anymore. I think OHA being reunited with hasslet and seeing the rawness of Landry will keep him excited and hungry.

you are talking about the safety position like it's a rb, it's not. i know it's hard to beleive but the redskins might have actually, wait for it, made a logical decision based on need and budget during free agency. i just hope to see alot more of this and less of the bs. the only thing i don't like about this trade is that it didn't happen last year, i still don't understand what happened last year, but hopefully we are on track now. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
^Agreed definitely should've pulled the trigger on this last yr, but he's durable, knows the system, and is a playmaker. He was the best available cover FS, which we haven't had since ST died. This at least shores up a weakness for 3-4 yrs.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I think give it time we can not find all our needs in the draft we have a limited amount of picks. Have faith in the FO/coaching staff.

A 30 year old safety can see 3-5 years of valuable playing time. Further, he can be an on field coach to teach any diamond in the rough type players you might find. We didn't trade a pick, and we didn't put ourself in "cap hell" and we shored up an identified weakness. The great teams have valuable balance of age and youth in their locker rooms. If he was 34 I would be far more understanding of your position, but right now he should bring good leadership. Should we have cut Fletcher last year simply because of his age? |

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
This one is a no brainer...a clear starting caliber FS when we had ZERO....in fact at the beginning of the year we only had one FS....Moore....and he...quite frankly sucked.
I don't give a crap if the guy is older...he is only 30 for heaven's sake. This team needs about 10 new starters....and we don't have that many draft picks. And even if we did....only 1st and 2nd rounders usually start....so if I were the GM....I'd load up on as many free agents as I could to buy me time to be able to build through the draft again. This will take years folks....years, to build this team. And we are ditching a starting CB, QB and RB too?...not to mention needing a center OLB, NT, kicker...maybe a guard, OT, DT, ILB....and some of you are complaining about getting the top free agent in our arguably weakest spot? (ok...maybe NT) C'mon guys...Rome wasn't built in a day....but this guy is a legit starter...I only wish we could keep Carlos, Portis, and McNabb for another year or 2 so we can focus on the heavy lifting positions. |
