I think you're trying too hard to rationalize a simple concept, they kept trading down to acquire more picks for a team in dire need of players, simple as that.
Ok I can see that, I sometimes miss the forest for the trees. I was driving all through the second and third round and listening to it on my phone, without being able to actually see some draft boards it just seemed like some of the trade backs were excessive. However I am nowhere near as well versed in the draft as some of you let alone Shanny and Allen obviously. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
Killing time at the dentist today, I drew out our 3-4 defensive personnel on paper today and came away mildly impressed.
RDE- Jenkins, NT- Bryant/Neild, LDE- Carriker ROLB- Rak, ILB- Fletcher, ILB- Riley/Henson, LOLB- Kerrigan FS- Otogwe, SS- Landry CB- Hall, Barnes, Brandyn Thompson *And this is without resigning our guys (Los) and before adding FA. Pretty good if you ask me.
Doesnt look bad, but CB is an epic fail with that line up. Experienced CB is needed...Carlos, Ike Taylor, or Nnamdi Asomugha...any would really work. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
We could still bring back Buchanon at corner too. And once Rogers sees his true value on the open market, perhaps he comes back as well.
|
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
First time in 7 years I'm excited about what may happen with the Skins.
FO did a great job. Lots of youth, didn't waste a truckload of $$ on a overpaid a-hole. I am actually beginning to believe again. HTTR! |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
FWIW, Chris Landry, former NFL Scout had good things to say about the Skins draft. In summary:
Kerrigan is going to be very, very good Liked the value picks, Robinson, Thompson, etc Paul- good return guy, physical, should help on ST Helu-should fit Shanny's system He said he doesn't grade drafts but really, really liked what the Skins did. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
As one who looked at your draft from afar you guys did great! I am truly impressed with what B. Allen and Shanny were able to pull off. They out wheeled and dealed the best wheeler/dealer in the FB business in Belichick IMVHO. Great draft! You had the best draft in the last 10-15 years and I believe it will show up on the field this year! Shanny is a hell of a coach don't sell him short!
Great going guys, I only wish I could say the same about the Dolphins - if anything we took another step back and I feel will be in the Luck Lottery forsure! |

I always catch him on sports radio round here. Out of all the so called experts, he is usually the most correct...guy used to run the combine and he still may work as a consultant for some teams. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
Yeah Landry is pretty well respected
|
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
Defensive line still looks like a trouble area, but that wasn't going to be a one year rebuild anyway. We did what we needed to do in the first season. Linebacker, once Rocky goes elsewhere, looks like the strength of our defensive unit. Secondary will be a force in run defense (against last year when they were a weakness), and they'll be bad in coverage unless the pass rush takes a big step forward, which it may.
The defense will probably be average to slightly below average in 2011. |

I think Gomes is a really physical safety like Landry. I wouldnt be suprised if he doesn't step in and take over when O'we goes down, and he will lol.

Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
I read somewhere (will try to find it) -- the worst Kerrigan will be is a solid outside linebacker with 8-10 sacks year after year.
Hell I'll take that!!! |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
I give our overall draft a B.
Trading down for extra picks - A+ Kerrigan - I'm warming to the pick because of the strength of our front 4 pass rush in nickel/dime situations. I would've went with Cam Jordan though. B Jenkins instead of Paea - D Hankerson in the 3rd - A Helu in the 4th instead of Ballard - C- Gomes instead of an interior OL that fits our scheme like Vandervelde, or a versatile G/T like Demarcus Love. - D Royster - C Robinson - B Thompson - B Hurt - B White - C Neild - B+ Niles Paul - B
Wow! Looks like some of my HS grades from 41 years ago! Except I had more Cs! I only knew about Kerrigan before the Draft, and I loved the trade backs for picks. I'm just not sure about the 1 trade back up; and the over abundance of WR picks. I give it a B as well, but TC and PS will prove whether some of these later picks are training camp fodder, or real players who make the team. |

That really wouldn't work unless they then moved Landry to FS which isn't a good spot for Landry. Gomes looks to be more of a SS than FS. |

From what I heard and read.. He's scouted to be either a nickel back or FS. Depending on his development. |

Starting to get kind of excited about Maurice Hurt. Anyone else?

I really like him. I hope he doesn't have to play this year because our interior line is so awesome lol, but I'd love to see him force his way into the starting lineup. He could be a great pick. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
I give this draft an A. Kerrigan, Jenkins, Hankerson and either Royster or Helu should start right away. Now we need 2 more like this one and we're on our way.
|
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
Neilid is my favorite pick. I foresee him starting this year. I also think that Kerrigan will start (and help free Rak to get 15 sacks while picking up 10 for himself). Jenkins will be part of the rotation but I think Carriker and Daniels will be opening day starters. Hankerson is another great value pick who could be a great starter for years to come. I really like the rb's chosen too.
I think this is the best Redskins draft, by far, in a long time. Of course that it isn't saying a lot. Not once did I completely shake my head trying to figure out what they were thinking. I think the only reach was Jenkins but I actually trust this staff to know what I don't. I'd say B+
Completely agree, I went to some WVU games this year and Neild is relentless, I mean you want to talk about a high motor guy he epitomises that. He essentially lead that defense (the best defense in college football this year). Jenkins is a developmental player but he possess the power to contribute immediately. Hankerson was on some very saavy experts' boards as a potential early second round pick and possibly a late first round, the value there is excellent. |

Hurt looks like another project pick, I think he needs to get into better shape before he will really be able to reach his potential. I know he is expected to play guard, it would be nice to see him battle for a backup role. I think he didn't get as much credit as some other linemen becasue he was playing next to pouncey and many of the scouts were focused on him this year at Florida. |

Well Warren and Soloman aren't the biggest skin fans.
So Wilcots thinks we should have tried to trade up for Jones? What a dipshit. I think they're both underestimating Kerrigan. And the McNabb ship has sailed long ago. Funny that some can't let that go. |

And he tested positive for weed at the combine. That could have hurt his draft stock just a little. |

Well Warren and Soloman aren't the biggest skin fans.
I'll let you know when I care about what Sapp says.. These two have no idea what they are talking about. I gave our draft a B+ and the only grip I had was I think we could of made another moce back in the 1st round and got another pick when those QB's were flying off the board. We had a solid draft, and we added alot of depth. I'm going to be really excited when these young guys that were not the smart pick at the time turn out to be hard working ballers. |

Well Warren and Soloman aren't the biggest skin fans.
Warren's just pissed off that a space eater (Jarvis Jenkins) wore his number instead of a sack artist. And Wilcotts...I'm guessing friends with McNabb. Also for the record. 2012's QB class looks pretty rough after Luck. Barkley would make it better but I still don't see the guy who refused to jump ship after USC's probation bolting as soon as the probation is lifted, making USC bowl eligible. Landry Jones seems promising but could easily take a cue from Bradford and return as well. So basically we're left with Luck and a bunch of Kaepernicks and Ponders that rise once the draft process begins. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
i was a little disappointed with the jenkins pick to be honest. our draft was more like a B+ for me but i think jenkins was somewhat of a reach, and i'd hoped we would look elsewhere besides a 3-4 defensive end that high in the 2nd round.

Shanahan confident his past minor indiscretions are behind him and his size and versatility will add depth to both ST and the WR positions.

The Raiders really hurt our chances at keeping carlos rogers for a reasonable price. When they gave Stanford Routt 3 years/ 31 MIL they basically set the market for rogers, or at least gave his agent some bargaining ammo when the Redskins eventually try to talk to them. These two guys basically have identical statistics last year Rogers -54 tackles, 1 FF, 2 INT Routt - 55 Tackles, 1 FF, 2 INT. Both are cover corners with no hands. Add to that the fact that Rogers is bitter about his tender last season and I would expect him to walk. |
Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
If he walks fine, but he's not going to find the big $$ out there he thinks he's worth.

Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
I know this is a bit off topic, but since we're talking about CBs, I'm really hating the rumors of Nnamdi to the Eagles.

Re: Redskins Draft Analysis Thread
Just as I suspected. So for all you guys saying that the Redskins should have tried for more remember this. The Cowboys got to greedy and had to reach 7 picks early for a Right Tackle instead of picking up an extra second.
Cowboys say no to trade offer from Jaguars The Cowboys got the same offer from the Jaguars that the Redskins eventually took. The Jaguars acquired the No. 10 pick from the Redskins to take quarterback Blaine Gabbert. To do so, the Jaguars gave up the No. 16 pick and the No. 49 pick. If the Cowboys had taken the offer, they would have had picks at 16 (the Jaguars’), 40 (their own) and 49 (the Jaguars’).
|

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jth70noSHz8]YouTube - Washington Redskins 2011 Draft Class Highlights[/ame] Has most of our picks and their highlights.. Something noticed in the video's is Helu is a freaking BURNER... Guy hits the corner and is GONE!!! I could see him starting by the start of the season, and R-ster or Torain at 2nd string. Hank will be our #1 soon.. He's a beast. |

Speaking of Hankerson....this interview with him on 106.7 the fan suggests he's a player that will be playing with a chip on his shoulder. I admire confidence when it's not borderline arrogance. I wonder, is this the first time Shanahan has gone hungry for captains in the draft? Or did something similar happen in one of his Broncos drafts?

The questions begs....was his draft board set up that way....did he follow his board, or was it just coincidence? Whatever his intention was, I think one could safely conclude it became apparent he was looking for a particular type of player. |
