Let's see if you can handle hitting people and being hit for a good portion of your life and waking up every Monday with bruises all over. Oh, and don't sleep through those boring team meetings, don't complain about the tedious rehab regiments should you blow a knee, and don't complain about the weather. And MOST CERTAINLY DON'T COMPLAIN about the psychological stress and pressure the fans and the media put on you.

Besides, players don't play in air conditioned workplaces unless its in a dome.

It is the owners that sit fat in the air conditioned owners box while the players are sweating on the field and putting theirs LIVES on the line in a very violent and dangerous game.
There are four NFL players that I know about that are now permanently quadriplegic from playing NFL football. Plus two, Thomas Herrion (49ers) and Korey Stringer (Vikings) that died immediately after walking off the football field from heat Stroke.
Not sure how many of your 65K cubicle co-workers were injured severely enough to end up quadriplegics or end up dieing from work related hazards?

Go spend your money elsewhere then. Playing NFL football is high risk and not as much as reward as people believe. And it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Its clear a lot of people here don't think of these guys as human beings but just as pawns to entertain them.

I recognize the NFL players as human beings and I hope that they come back to the league, but if they are adamant about not playing this season, then let the owners use replacement players.

The sad thing is alot of these pro players have no education or any kind of practical skills outside of playing football. If they dont play, it's very sad but they will most likely be broke within a year or two...that is truly a sad thing.

Wow.......look I played this game in high school and college for free and if they would have had me as a pro as well ,I think most of us would love to play this game as a living.......but man you make them sound like Gods .......the players are just that players .I sure as hell would like to knmow what you think of the Police ,Fire and EMT's that responded to 9/11....that only made 45.000
Korey Stringer was over weight and as a player who has had heat stroke .....you know when something isn't right,he's as much to blame as anyone.....he should have been hydrating for days in preseason.....he wasn't a rookie. I played in a game were a player died an another almost did it wasn't the coaches or the other team...and it took me along time to realize that....it just happens and people do the best they can but as the T-shirt says ....shit happens

Sorry to pick on you but this the classic uninformed and illogical mentality that exists.

When did the players EVER say they didn't want to play? Remember, they were locked out and the league could have ended the lockout at a moment's notice if they chose to.

Secondly, the owners are not allowed to use replacement players because, again, THEY initiated this work stoppage.

Finally, of all of the major (and minor) sports, football players are the most educated with all of them attending at least 3 years of post high school education. No other sport comes close to that. Most players turn into viable and productive members of society after their playing days are done.

I'm so glad football will be back next week so we can be rid of these inane conversations.

I think the NFL has pretty much hit it's ceiling for revenue or damn near close. You need only look at the economy to understand this. Wages aren't getting any higher but inflation is/has rising steadily. It comes down to a max you'll be able to squeeze out of companies for advertising.

That said, lack of money skills does not necessarily mean lack of other skills that can land them jobs better than the burger joint. They certainly have the capital to pursue various business ventures. The matter is where to pursue the venture, and that is where pro football players trip due to folks who want to nab their money.

I disagree. Adding more primetime games will dilute their product. It used to be that Monday Night Football was the big game to watch (now it's moved to Sunday night), and Sunday night was the meh...it's on so I'll watch it kinda game. You start adding in more primetime guys and you'll saturate your market and not in a good way.

The revenues for the NFL have skyrocketed the past 5-10 years. There is no way it can continue that type of revenue. Much like the housing market and anything else, there comes a time and point where you can't get anymore. Sure they'll get increase in revenue, but at some point, it isn't going to be feasible for TV stations to get the rights to broadcast. When you see NFL broadcasting rights expense start outweighing the advertising revenue, then you'll see TV stations backing down on even bidding.

Tapping the internet market has only just begun. As we move towards internet provision of all of our entertainment (which is the current trend), the internet pie will produce pieces which are not on the table today and the pie will grow.

You are assuming the current technology stays constant and that new branches of communication don't open up. Even with todays tech, has anyone thought about revenue generated by streaming games?

10 years ago, there wasn't an NFL Network adverting games. I am sure in 10 years we will be paying for new and different ways to view the game.

Just saying, the world is not a static place. The economy will again bounce back and revenues will rise - inflation will cause wages to rise, etc. etc. I would not be surprised if (after adjusing for inflation) NFL real revenues increase by 50% or more in the 10 years.

I think you are showing that economics is maybe not your strong suit. The NFL basically maintained or grew their revenues (depending on how you look at it) during the worst economic time period in decades. Their ceiling for revenue is high...very high. And that is the main driving force behind this entire situation.

I know economics quite well, and them thriving in a economic downturn doesn't mean jack. Many corporations out there thrived in a economic downturn. GE had 14 billion in profits last year, and oil companies...well, record profits. The main driving force behind this entire situation is the owners want a bigger percentage of the profits. It's always been about greed. It's not about money so they can invest in new stadiums, because they are just going to hold their cities hostage over that.

How many season ticket holders are going to continue paying with a 50% increase to tickets? parking? concessions? I say that, but normal people are just as stupid with their money as NFL players are. Instead of buying bling, they finance NFL tickets. Their ceiling may be high, but you fail to realize is that average income hasn't risen like it should have over the years. Inflation has caught up and bit us in the ass. Sure you may be doing great, but a good portion of the nation are not. They are trying to make ends meat.

The economy will rebound, but doesn't account for jobs continuing to be shipped overseas because some foreign kid will do it for 1/10 of the cost you do it at. Companies can't keep throwing money into advertising without passing it on to the consumers, and how's that going to work? It's not. Pay isn't rising, but inflation is.

Inflation has not been that high. In fact, the highest average yearly inflation percentage was 4.1% in 2007.
Current Inflation Rates | Monthly and Yearly Chart, Graph and Table: 2001-2011 Data - US Inflation Calculator

Not only that, but cheaper labor costs means an increase in profits, which the corporation or partnership or sole proprietorship can then use to lease out those luxury boxes, which provides a rather significant chunk of the revenue that teams get.

I wasn't implying that inflation is sky high. I'm comparing it to the rise of family income. I think the average median family income in most states were down, while inflation rose.

Income Data - State Median Income - U.S Census Bureau

I maybe 100% wrong on the NFL nearing it's max revenue, but I think we'll know soon enough. If the economy continues to dump, don't expect it.
