Thankfully we have some depth at these positions. Wish we would have held on to Markus White.
He's on TB practice squad and the Skins should go get him, I think he would be the best choice to replace Orakpo's roster spot followed by Kehl.

Agree w posts above. Rak is great, but we overvalue him. I'd bet Robby J and C-Dubb fill in well. Shanny has actually developed decent depth, unless previous decades.

Couple of points:
1) Our defensive problem has been SECONDARY, not D-line/LB. Our front seven was full-force for most of the past 2 games, and the QBs just threw quickly to uncovered WR. Unless we strengthen our secondary so they can cover for THREE TO FOUR SECONDS, then who cares whether we have Orakpo?

2) Does anyone think Shanahan / Redskins medical personnel rushed Orakpo back to the field? Perhaps taking more time off to recover would have helped prevent this - he already hurt himself in the preseason and we only gave him a few weeks off.

3) What the heck defensive scheme was Haslett running? Zone my a$$. I digress..

I wasn't very clear about it but I was only joking. While i do believe that Both Orakpo and Carriker are huge pieces in our front seven, I don't think we'll be significantly worse without them. As long as Jenkins steps up his game some, I think the Defense will be okay.

Whether or not orakpo is playing this defense is so far from ok. Like hundreds and hundreds of yards far from it.

I like Rob Jackson or Chris Wilson. They both can rush the passer almost as good as Orakpo can. One of them should replace #98.

So do I, but we still need to fill Orakpo's vacancy. Markus White or Bryan Kehl make the most sense and one of them should be brought back.

We'll see what happens. Bruce and Mike know fully well that Markus White knows the system and plays OLB. Kehl on the other hand knows the system as well, but plays ILB. Unless an injury happens to Riley or Fletcher, I don't see Kehl being brought back.

Man, the initial hearing of this news really burns. I don't feel so bad about having Jenkins replace Carriker, though it was really nice having Carriker starting and Jenkins rotating in wherever we needed him. Carriker was a rock for the D, but i'm excited to see what Jenkins has to offer.

I really think we're gonna miss Orakpo more than some people are saying. Seems like a lot of people thought he was overrated. He sets the edge against the run well, pressures the quarterback ALOT, and has really improved in coverage. Offense's pay a lot of attention to him and i think he contributes more to any success our D may have than some of us believe. It'll suck not having Orakpo & Kerrigan coming off both edges, but i think it'll force Kerrigan into the spotlight. He'll face a lot of double teams and chip blocks from the running back but all that work could poise him for a breakout year NEXT season. Kerrigan will be an elite player sooner than later IMO.

The optimistic side of me is thinking that we weren't winning the Super Bowl this year anyways, might actually serve us some good to get guys like Jenkins, Wilson & Jackson some legitimate playing time. Hopefully this turns into a blessing in disguise and one of those guys turns out to be a strong role player for us down the road.

Excellent post. Orakpo will certainly be missed. But I'm confident that either Chris Wilson or Rob Jackson will do well in Orakpo's absence. If you recall, Jackson replaced Brian Orakpo in the defensive line up towards the end of the 2010 season and played well. Chris Wilson on the other hand showed during the preseason what he is capable of from coming off the edge.

I'm happy to see Jarvis Jenkins finally getting his shot. He'll do well in Carriker's place. Now that Jenkins is in the starting role he will step his game up. He was a little silent during the preseason, but that was only because he was still working his way back from that injury in his rookie season.

With Carriker and Orakpo gone, I'm looking for Wilson/Jackson and Jenkins to step up and make a huge impact.
What?

Rak is second only to Matthews in number of sacks since they both joined joined the league (29 for Rak 33 for Matthews, 170 tackles to Matthews' 171). He made an immediate impact on our team with his arrival, and his absence will adversely affect our front seven and its ability to create pressure.

Some Redskins fans are acting as if he isn't a stud and that his absence won't have that big of an impact on our D.

They are wrong.

He is and it does. That's the reality.

Will the other guys step up? We can only hope. But this incessant downplaying of Rak's ability and his affect on our defense is silly.
One guy plays on a team that wins, the other one doesn't and that's the difference.

That was a great post and yo uare right this not a SB season for us. The most important thing this year is RGIII stays healthy and he gets a year under his belt of NFL experience. The icing on the cake would be a trip to the playoffs.

There is more difference than that. One has many moves to get to the QB, the other one has one move only. One can actually stop the run and cover in space, the other one does not.

Part because of poor personnel decisions, and part because of some awful injury luck, our defense is completely cooked. Likely looking at a bottom five unit by most measures.

It was the reason why I held back from making the prediction that he would be signed to the Skins' active roster. If the competition between him, Wilson, and Rob Jackson, is even, give White a chance to show what he can do in a game.

Re: Orakpo and Carriker Done for Season

With the opponents we are playing this year, I would expect our defense to consistently be in the bottom half, simply because there aren't many teams we are facing who have a bad offense. Most of them are score at will types. So it will be important that our offense is capable of matching them. Unfortunately the defenses we are playing only get stronger as well. We need Garcon back, and we need FD to do better than 2 receptions on 5 targets if we hope to win consistently this year.
