Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
This is ShanAllen's 4th draft. As we enter into their 4th draft, here's a little recap/reminder of past drafts with my own take on each:
2010: Trent Williams (1) Perry Riley (4) Dennis Morris (6) Terrence Austin (7) Erik Cook (7) Selvish Capers (7) Hits: Williams, Riley. Misses: Everybody else. Three years down the road, a starting left tackle and a starting ILB. Williams took a huge step forward last year and, barring injury, will hopefully continue. While Okung out in Seattle has earned some pro bowl recognition, I am okay with this pick as I think Williams is about to enter into beast mode and be a fixture in post season honors. Riley, after a non-descript start, and IMO, had a breakout 2012 and has really a solid player for a 4th round pick. He is the kind of in-house developed player we need to keep getting and devolping through the draft. As to the misses, the average number of players stickng for more than 3 years out of the 7th round is pretty abysmal percentage. No great shakes here. 2011 Ryan Kerrigan (1) Jarvis Jenkins (2) Leonard Hankerson (3) Roy Helu (4) Dejon Gomes (5) Niles Paul (5) Evan Royster (6) Aldrick Robinson (6) Brandyn Thompson (7) Maurice Hurt (7) Markus White (7) Chris Neild (7) Hard to label anyone in this class a clear hit or a clear miss - Kerrigan is solid and flashes potential but, IMHO, a first rounder should consistently challenge for pro-bowl recognition. Not sure if you can say that about Kerrigan. For the rest of the class, this is the year for them to step up. Right now, only [EDIT: Markus White] is no longer with the team. On one hand, if everyone else develops like Perry Riley did, we could have a terrific class here. Hell, if half the names mentioned become regular solid starters (or major contributors like Helu as the change of pace/3rd down back) after an initial slow production, it would still be a very good draft. At the same time, even w/out knowing who we draft, and by the end of training camp, I could see Gomes, Royster, Robinson, Thompson and Nield gone. I think Hankerson, Helu and Paul get a year to show up, but it is not beyond the realm of probability that they could be gone also. 2012 Robert Griffin III (1) Josh LeRibeus (3) Kirk Cousins (4) Keenan Robinson (4) Adam Gettis (5) Alfred Morris (6) Tom Compton (6) Richard Crawford (7) Jordan Bernstine (7) Griffin & Morris. If we drafted no one else, this would be a great class. Throw in Cousins. Amazing. I think Crawford goes into the hit column as well, he had some rough games but he also had some really solid plays as a DB. As a returner ... Banks who?? LeRibeus, Gettis and Compton. Just don't know enough. Apparently they are very high on LeRib. It would be nice if all three pan out - especially Compton - but draftable OL are, to me, pretty much replaceable after the 4th round. Sooner or later we are bound to hit on some of these guys. Crossing my fingers on Robinson and Bernstine. Not much else to do with them. All in all, lots of question marks with some real solid hits and now giant whiffs. I imagine more of the same this year. |
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
Just a further note. In three years, Shanallen have drafted 27 players. Of them, 22 are currently on the roster. Even if lose 8 guys from the classes of 2011 & 12 after training camp, that close to a 50% hit rate on all draft picks. Hard to argue with that.

Yup. Will edit for correction. |
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
They signed 3 RT (Polumbus, Pashos, Trueblood) and have 2 players they drafted in the past 2 years (Hurt, Compton) that all are candidates at RT. This one is an example where the staff/FO clearly has a different opinion and vision of need regarding this position and the 2013 draft.
WR is still an issue on this team. Basically the future (2014 and beyond) of this position is Garçon and Hankerson. That's it. To ignore it in the draft is irresponsible. Also, using the BPA philosophy, especially if there is a run on secondary players in the 1st/2nd, WR may be the best value.
Oh geez what a difference some random post makes (whoever initially said WR is suddenly an immediate need). What happened to Morgan, Robinson, Moss, Davis, Paulsen, next year's FA and draft? You and the chief of police of Malibu...real reactionaries. lol We have sufficient talent at WR for the foreseeable future and definitely for the 2013 campaign. We have no idea what's going on at RT. We have a franchise QB who was nearly murdered last season in several games. Personally, in four plus decades of watching football I don't remember hearing announcers/commentators say "That looks like a concussion" as often as it was said about RG last season. Unless somebody KNOWS who our starting RT is AND can say that person is up to the task (health, talent etc), assuming we're good there just doesn't make any sense. |

Wait, what? I thought it was Polumbus and Brown? I can't keep all the nobody's and has-beens straight anymore ;) Does anybody know anything about Compton? Pashos sounds like a stand up guy. Given his injury situation though, relying on him would be unforgivable by the FO. |

If anything though someone out of Morgan, Hankerson, Robinson should emerge this year. To me Recievers have three levels. Elite, good, and Devin Thomas. Unless you have a player with elite potential no need going out of your way as your Recievers production should be a combination of your offensive system and your QB play. Personally I'm more worried about Tight End. Davis is not only coming off that achilies but is easily, if not already, one more YouTube video or blunt away from a suspension. With his luck someone will post a video of him kicking a puppy and its female owner while smoking a joint. Paul's lack of hands make me nervous and Cooley is no longer Captain Chaos. More like Honorary Adviser Chaos. |

Really hoped Morgan and Hank would turn it on with Garcon out, to my untrained eyes I haven't seen it. |
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
I think hankerson will be just fine. Usually takes wrs till year three to really get in their comfort zone........
|
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
Only thing stopping Hankerson is Hankerson. Poor work ethic is holding him back

Prior to last year Garçon didn't have any injury issues. I think it's a little premature to slap him with the injury prone label. Considering the injuries Morgan played through I thought he did a solid enough job. Hopefully he can step it up now that he should be healthier. |

Four guys that can hurt you in different ways. 1. Garcon- Go to guy, Good route runner, tough, plays like a possession receiver but has enough speed to run away from most defenders which is a plus. 2. Morgan- Has the size to shield away defenders. Great blocker, can go over the middle, has decent enough straight line speed, good hands. 3. Hankerson- Has size and speed, but like Smoot said needs to improve work ethic. 4. Robinson/Draft pick- The "speedster", can fly by anyone and requires a safety to help on him just because he is that fast. |

I think Hankerson takes that step this season along with Morgan and Garcon will continue to be our top WR as he projected to 1200 yards this season had he not been injured. With Moss getting up there in age I think we need that 4th guy to make our WR core deadly and Davis returning helps a lot. |

I cant seem to get the embeding to work so here is just a link:

Pretty sure what most are talking about in a back is a scat back who is a threat to catch the ball and make plays with speed rather than a bruiser like Morris. AM is our all day back but a nice change in speed would help spell Alfred and give the defense something else to contend with. |

I think it is more that Helu still isn't healthy and there are a lot of underrated backs who can fill that 3rd down change of pace back (Andre Ellington, Giovanni Bernard, Kenjon Barner)
Good post. I'd rather add a weapon at RB in the draft, but I won't hate it if we add another WR. I can see that but I'd hope not taking one with our first pick
|

Dont see that happening. |
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
I'd prefer Terrance Williams over Justin Hunter. TW already has familiarity with RG3, is healthier, and can catch. Hunter has already torn his ACL and has Julio Jones hands.
|
Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
I'm behind the scat back idea. Having a shifty speedster coming from our backfield would make our offense even more deadly.

Can't remember him being injured much in Indy, but then again it's not like he saw a lot of action/wear and tear there. |

3rd down back/effective change of pace from Morris. Helu can't stay healthy and Royster so far is a flop. |

Why do you act as if these guys are high school kids? These guys are grown adults. If they need "mentoring" at this stage in their life, chances are they are too stupid to be playing football and don't deserve to play in the NFL. |

I think that's a bit harsh NC career professionals in all kinds of industries have mentoring programs for newcomers and advancement employees. As far as Hank goes, if he is lazy being around guys like fletch, III, and the hardworking leaders of our team, then I do not think a mentor would help him because honestly they are all around him. |

I guess it's me admitting that in my early/mid twenties maturity wasn't my strong suit, and these guys are rich and famous to boot making good choices even more difficult. ...in fact, thank God I didn't get rich young it would have ruined me. Can you imagine how big an asshole I'd be today?? |
