Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Kirk was the polar opposite of RG3 in so many facets of playing QB.
IMO Kirk was anti drama as well. For how messy the situation got with the endless franchise tags and contract confusion Kirk said NOTHING. Never went into Skins bashing mode. Took it on the chin and moved on.... Im with whoever puts on the uniform on sundays but i dont have a crystal ball. Ill see it when i see it. |

Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
The drama gave us 2 NFC East championships, I will try hard to remember that from the past 5 years.
BUT YES - Smith wants a ring, and I believe (full tilt koolaid) he is going to get one here. As draining as the past 5 years was for fans, the players and FO had to experience that too. Smith's letter to the Chiefs fans was good stuff about his teammates, and I think guys like TW and the Sherriff will eat it up. Richardson, Doctson and Crowder will also find a qb that is working with them and for them. (no old qb commentary only looking forward to the positives). I want to see a dominant DL player in the draft. We have other needs, but we have to stuff the run, and a young hungry player is what you need. I also wish Snyder would upgrade the field. Who knows how related it is, but I think that the poor turf adds to our yearly injury count. HTTR!!
A massive upgrade of the current roster is needed even to sniff the playoffs. We have only one decent RB(CT) and the rest are bums. Richardson upgrades the WR corp, but in my opinion it still is deficient. It is a coin flip if Doctson lives up to the expectations we had when we drafted him. If he shines and stays healthy, we will be fine at WR. JC flourished in the slot and did great damage when he had DJ and PC with him and that is where I hope he plays. We need to make drafting a DL top priority like you said, even two. But we really need a quality corner or safety. In fact two DLs and DBs need to be drafted. Norman is going to need to be replaced soon. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Hello Redskins fans. Greetings from Kansas City! I just wanted to join your site to chime in on Alex Smith, as I have witness first hand the last 5 years of his career.....
Alex Smith is the consummate professional. He handles himself with class and will never have a problem off the field. He is a great leader of men, and the locker room just loves him. With the way things have happened with your guys QB situation in the past 5 or so years, I think this would be a welcomed change. He wont be drama. He just wants to win. Onto the field stuff.... Alex's greatest strength is his ability to protect the ball. He typically doesnt throw backbreaking interceptions, which can absolutely kill teams at times. He plays good ball control, he doesnt put his defense in bad position, and can manage a game very well. Another good thing that comes with Alex in THIS situation is his preference to checkdown to running backs and throw to Tight Ends. If Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson can stay healthy, I wouldnt be shocked if they combine for 1800 yards receiving, just on their own. Then throw in Vernon Davis who Alex has a great relationship with, and you might just have something here. Onto the bad news.... With his ball security style of play, this often times comes at the expense of having a respectable passing offense. Last season was night and day difference with Alex than every other year of his career. In that respect, I hope that year wasnt just an outlier, and he continues to play at that level with you guys. But it took him 5 years as a Chief to play at that level, and 13 years as a pro to play at that level. Alex has led bottom of the barrel passing offenses for his entire career sans last season. He is very tentative to throw the ball into tight windows. He tends to leave big plays on the field A LOT. His field vision is pretty good presnap, but very poor post snap. When plays break down, he isnt the type to be able to make something out of nothing. If a play doesnt go exactly as plans, far more often than not, its a completely failed play. Another big complaint I have is his pocket presence, or lack there of. He is so afraid of standing tall and taking a hit that he constantly bails from clean pockets right as receivers are breaking open. He will drive you guys nuts with missed game changing plays. And I dont mean missed like an errant pass. I mean he never even sees wide open WRs on the field. Plays like this should not happen for NFL QBs: I really didnt want to pile on him, because I genuinely am rooting for him to succeed. But after a while, he will leave you guys wanting more. He is a fine QB to stabilize the QB position for a team. He did a great job in KC at that and made us forget about the stench of Matt Cassel and Tyler Palko. But he is replacing a very good QB in Cousins, and I sincerely hope for your guys sake that you arent expecting an improvement. Alex was carried by great running games and strong defenses that I worry will not be able to carry him in Washington. Good luck to you guys. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Our previous QB had some of the same issues and had a ton of meaningless yards (in my book they are meaningless if they didn't result in Ws). On top of that, he didn't want to play here in the past two years, never seemed to be able to start the season right, and in a very deceptive way, always made things about him.
I don't think we are expecting Aaron Rodgers, but there will be aspects of the QB position that Alex Smith will almost automatically improve compared to our previous QB. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
First to say Alex was propped up by the run...certainly it was a major help, but the defense?
KC was one of the worst pass defenses in the league and wasn’t much better against the run. Alex play bailed out your defense...not the other way around. That’s a big oversight. Alex smith’s play this upcoming season won’t be the reason Skins struggle...just like cousins wasn’t the reason the team struggled this past year. We didn’t take a big step back at the qb position with Alex smith. Good luck this season... |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
A lot of those comments by Visitor are true of Smith’s play in 2016 and years prior, but were certainly not true last year on the whole. The GIF was taken from a game in 2017 when KC hit the skids there in the middle of the season - his protection broke down frequently and yes he certainly missed some plays that game. You can see in the GIF he flushed right as he felt 92 James Harrison leave Kelce and rush the passer. If he stood in there and took the shot he could have hit the wide open deep post before the hit from Harrison. But his protection failed him that game and you can tell he got jumpy.
But later in the season as the Chiefs offense regained its footing and protected him better he got hot again. By the end of the season he had a Pro Bowl berth and led the NFL in a lot of categories. It bodes well for him as a Redskin, because for all the Redskins’ problems with running the ball consistently, the one thing anybody will tell you is they can pass protect with the best of them. As Jay adds some of the RPO stuff Smith did in KC, it’s easy to see how Smith will enjoy a comfortable pocket. He’ll have as good a chance as anybody to deliver from a clean pocket. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Agree with most being said.
About that:
... When plays break down, he isnt the type to be able to make something out of nothing. If a play doesnt go exactly as plans, far more often than not, its a completely failed play. ...
I'd say it was one of the big critics made about Kirk (even if he had to improved a little bit last year behind a depleted OL), so I don't think it will be a drop off... I even think, from what I saw, Alex Smith's athleticism allows him to extend plays in the Redzone better than Kirk. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
I’m sure we’ll somehow survive going from Cousins to Smith.
|
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Smith is consistent, his stats don't lie.. Last yr was an unusual career yr for him.. I'd expect the same Alex Smith we've always seen, 24 TDs 10 INTS. His WINS
Are the only thing I care about. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Nice break down KC; I think lot of us are not expecting Alex to bring Redskins to super bowl single handedly although I think Alex will be good fit for Gruden's system. Offense won't be issue for Redskins this season, unless we f*cked up with RB situation again.

Its literally all about the run game this season. If we don't improve it big time then its gonna be bad. |

That's why we need G/RB over DB :) No but seriously if AS has to pass 40 times a game we won't win much |

I agree, I am kinda anxious about draft this weekend. I'm really curious to see what Redskins' strategy is.. Losing 3rd round pick hurts so I can see Redskins making some trades to move back and up eventually.
That's why we need G/RB over DB :) No but seriously if AS has to pass 40 times a game we won't win much
Bypassing a talented DB just to fill in a need is not good way to go, IMO.. Swearinger is on 2nd year of 3 years contract. We will need someone to fill in Swearinger if and when he signs with different team. Also, Moreau is unknown, Dunbar is still growing and Norman isn't getting any younger. NFL is passing league so we cannot have enough good DBs. Improvements in offense will be moot if we cannot stop other teams from scoring on us. |

Good luck to you guys.
This was on my mind the first time I head about us getting Alex Smith. At this point we do not have a strong running game and we are missing a starting caliber LG and have a very inexperienced Center. There is a chance we not will see the same 2017 Alex Smith in 2018. Alex is being thrown into a much different situation then he had in KC. This needs to be addressed. |

Here are our ranks: 2017: 15th 2016: 7th 2015: 3rd 2014: 2nd 2013: 5th My Chiefs had had a top defense in terms of points allowed for 4 of the last 5 years. You what that yielded for us? 1 playoff win and 4 playoff losses...and the one win was when Brian Hoyer turned the ball over five times. Now lets compare that to the Redskins the last five years in terms of points allowed: 2017: 27th 2016: 19th 2015: 17th 2014: 29th 2013: 30th Like I said, Alex Smith is a fine QB when he is playing on a team that could mask his weaknesses. If you guys get Alex of 2017, your team wont miss a beat from Cousins to Smith. If you guys get pre2017 Alex, it could be a long 5 years with him. |

Thanks for your input. Usually what is heard whenever this team picks up a solid player from another team is that the fan of that team chimes in to say, "That guy was going down hill anyway. You over spent for him!" For instance, Josh Norman. I remember seeing Panthers fans talk about how Norman wasn't a big loss. Now, they talk about how upset they are at their former GM for getting rid of good players - like Norman! I think most of us 'skins fans know what we're getting in Smith. A solid player who is very similar to Cousins. A lot of what you said could be said about Cousins as well. There have been times where Cousins didn't see the wide open receiver down field. There are times where Cousins didn't have the pocket presence. But, unlike Smith, there were times where Cousins would throw the untimely INT. Not as much in the last couple of years, but he was guilty. I think all in all, like Darrell Green said, we got Cousins' older brother. They're the same guy, only difference is, Smith will protect the ball slightly better, a bit more mobile, and of course, older. |

And out defense was certainly a disappointment. But like I illustrated, as bad as our defense was relative to the other 4 years, we were still ok relative to the rest of the league. We were just spoiled by the previous years. Alex's season last year was very good on paper. VERY good. But he still left a lot to be desired. In pretty much every loss, Alex had an opportunity or 2 go win the game for us. He didnt. As great as his overall season was, he was pretty bad in clutch situations. You should check out the play by play of the final couple drives in our losses if you are curious. I think you would be pretty surprised at how poor the QB play was during that time. Anyway, I feel like I am being overly negative and that in no way was my intention. I truly do wish the best for you and Alex. |

I went to a Minnesota board with the same intention, but ultimately decided to let the new fans of KC see him in their team. No reason to put the negativity he had created in me onto them. New team new start. That said, I get that you were trying to give a long term perspective, and good discussion is always welcome here. Like one guy said, no one here thinks AS is going to be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but we also know (except the pessimists on the board) that our offense and coaching staff know how to get the most out of capable qb's. Cousins is a fine example of how our staff covered alot of his weaknesses (except RZ) by scheme. If AS can continue NOT to turn the ball over, and spark RZ points, we should be ok on the offensive side with AS. Hopefully team gurus are working feverishly on the defensive side. |
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
Seriously the guy has been a top 15 QB for 90% of his career... He's the model of consistency for a NON ELITE QB. I don't see why anyone would question his future.
|
Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.
I don’t think anyone is expecting him to be Tom Brady or Rodgers. Just like 90% of the QBs in this league he needs a good supporting cast. Smith has limitations just like Cousins does.
I appreciate some knowledge from someone who’s watched him closely but I’ve seen enough of him too over the years to know what we’re getting. |

I sure am hoping a lot of Radio commentators are going to be shocked by the improvement a stable qb situation, WITH a qb that wants to be here, will make. On Sirius NFL network, there is a lot of -maybe not Cousins love but definitely Alex Smith dismissal. Comments in the vain of, they didn't improve their qb, but it's probably a wash. I think AS has a 10 year track record of winning with different players/coaches/organizations, and I expect that to continue here.

I don't think he's an upgrade when it comes to stats, but he's an upgrade in situational football. That is what wins games, he never turns the ball over. |

Cool customer, professional, and knowledgeable...kinda nice not to be hearing the same shit about qb going into the summer that’s we’ve talked about the last several years.
