Is anybody factoring in how Alex Smith feels about it? You think he worked his ass off just for the symbolic nature and the platitudes? I'm thinking he came all the way back, and once he gets cleared by the team he's gonna wanna fight for a starting job with another team. We'll probably oblige him in helping him go to the team of his choosing if that's the case. Just sucks because I liked having him here as a mentor to Haskins.
Mooby we typically agree on plenty...AS needs to hang it up. The image of his leg...no way should he get back on the field again.

I gotta feeling there is another role on the team or org for Smith. He isn’t going far.

I wouldn't blame him if he did hang 'em up, but the man just spent almost 2 years coming back from a wound comparable to a combat zone injury. You think he's gonna settle for getting a doctor's clearance? Nah. He made it this far, obviously his doctors have said he has no physical setbacks and is back to pre-injury form, once he gets team clearance he's gonna want to prove he can go out on his own terms. Obviously it won't happen with us but you know there will be some team out there willing to let him fight for a job. And if nobody wants to I'm sure he'd settle for sticking out with Rivera and being Haskins' backup.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Let the man complete his journey, Jesus Christ. Calling for him to retire now is brainless. Why would you work so hard to return only to retire now? Money, sure. But now that you’re possibly on the precipice of making the most improbable comeback of all time, NOW you’re going to step away from the game you loved as a kid, at a time when you maybe have 3 years remaining in the game anyway?

Let the doctors look at him and let him take the next step accordingly. Christ, some of you guys aren’t even suited to speak at a 5th grade career day.

Smith wants to play. If he is cleared then put him out there in practice. If he can not move around and protect himself then he and the coaches will know. Let it play itself out.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Alex Smith has more than earned the right to go out in whatever way he wants to. If he wants to play, and team doctors say he's cleared, then he is on the team. There is no way AS on the roster is anything other than a positive.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

There should be some special kind of protection for the leg, maybe a special pad lined with steel so when he does get hit hopefully he can walk back to the huddle.

Just getting to this point is a major win for him. I still can't see him ever playing again though.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

I wouldn't bet against him.

He's not working to just take a snap or be relegated to QB3 to never see the field again...and I don't buy it that his sole drive is to keep getting paid.

He was just added to the active/PUP list that will run through Week 6. Then a decision will have to be made to activate him or find alternative plans for him.

My personal opinion is that while Alex Smith has earned his right to end his career as he wishes...I do think that he should be greatful to be alive and still have his leg. If Alex Smith is completely cleared to play, I seriously think that Alex Smith should be assigned to either the QB-2 slot or the QB-3 slot. That way Alex Smith can say that he truly came back and he can be a mentor (coach) to Dwayne Haskins.

Just my thoughts [emoji189]

Not necessarily, the local reporters, Keim and Findley, mentioned that if the player does not start camp on the PUP list then he cannot then be moved onto it at a later date, so starting him on the PUP list is just keeping their options open in case he can't quite make it yet during training camp

A player can't go on PUP if they pass the physical, so they must have failed him on his.

Per Ron Rivera both Alex Smith and Rueben Foster failed their physicals.

I wasn't counting on Foster this year, or ever.

Shame, he could be a big contributor on D, he has/had talent.

If healthy Smith in mix at QB.

Is Alex considered high risk do to fighting a serious infection and almost losing his leg?

Alex Smith’s comeback is a great story, but I would be just amazed if he ever sees the field again. The guy almost died from this injury and is over 35 years old. I think Dan Snyder needs a friend a lot more than the WFT needs an old QB.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Alex Smith should do himself a favor and retire. I am not saying this to be mean or that he isn't a good qb. I am just thinking from a health point of view. If he took a low shot to that leg again I don't know how well it would hold him. The risk is too great - but that is his choice to make...

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

I heard JP make a good point today...what have the Skins done since the AS injury? Invested a no 1 pick in Haskins as well as a 5 th round pick at QB. He’s right.

Both calculated moves...both young guys who have shown serious flashes to build upon.

The org is stalling if AS plays...he was borderline terrible when he was healthy. AS, get off the field

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

I can't imagine the team would want to take on the responsibility of putting him on the field again. Think about what a disaster it would be if he got seriously hurt again. If he's serious about playing again it can't be here. Trade him if need be.

Exactly. If he played and got hurt “the redskins being the redskins again...they put Haskins in danger play him too early last year and now they played a QB who damn near lost his leg”.....this is not the right spot of AS if he wants to continue his playing career. He’s a strong back up somewhere else

So in strict financial terms, it's a WIN-WIN for both sides if he just stays on the roster until the end of his contract. He gets paid, the team doesn't get screwed on the cap hit.

Really, that doesn't seem right, OTC has 0 cap hit if we cut him now

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Post 6/1 release
2020 Dead Cap: $21,400,000
2021 Dead Cap: $10,800,000
2020 Cap Savings: $0

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-football-team/alex-smith-3337/

If he can't pass a physical and was cut we'd get something like a $12m cap credit due to that insurance policy

MTK 08-03-2020 04:04 PM

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Cutting him in 2021 is the way to go

Post 6/1 release
2021 Dead Cap: $5,400,000
2022 Dead Cap: $5,400,000
2021 Cap Savings: $19,000,000

OTC has a slightly different bonus proration structure, but in any case it would be a post June 1 release which has less impact on this years cap, always thought OTC was a good resource.......

Apologies just reread your post and the numbers appear to be about the same, what I meant was 0 additional cap hit if we cut him now

Just my 2 cents here...I’ve always like sportstrac a little better than otc. Sportstrac salary predictions have always been a lil off, but there free agent lists and team dashboards are pretty cool.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Cut him in 2021. Trade him now if he can actually pass the physical later AND he really insists on playing.

The future is Haskins. He should be given the entire season to prove himself or not. I think he will have an excellent season unless the OL collapses. If Haskins has a poor season, because of his own actions, then we draft the best QB in the 2021 draft.

Alex Smith and the incredibly generous contract he was given, was the last turd left by Bruce Allen. Bruce panicked after totally mismanaging the “Kurt” Cousins affair.

I salute Alex Smith’s grit and amazing recovery. But if we ever play him and he is hurt again, the team will be crucified by the press.

If Alex had not been injured, his contract would have been worth it. I was extremely excited about getting him here and he showed us what he could do, even under a turd coach like Gruden...had led the team to a 6-2 start!

Look how bad the team was post-Smith that season. He's just a winner.

He was the perfect game manager for us that season, I really thought we were going to win the east and 11 games.. This organization proved how ill prepared they were after he went down, Colt Mccoy was never reliable either and that was our backup plan.... Again losers lose for a reason
