Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Green was a very good player at GA but who's to say he comes in and shines for us? We don't even have a QB right now, We can pick up a WR in the 2nd if needed. Baldwin and T Young will both be available. I do agree that Green is better than Jones, but I would try and trade out of 10 maybe with STL who needs a WR more than us believe it or not

I expect Green to be at that level where he'll always be able to put up numbers assuming his QB is competent. If he has the right QB he'll be able to put up 1,500 yards, otherwise he'll be a solid 1,000+ contributer, even with someone like Grossman throwing to him. He is one of the rare talents that won't be completely dependent on being drafted to a team with a Peyton Manning or Phillip Rivers to produce.

Personally Green is the only receiver I'm really interested in drafting during day one. Otherwise we're better off looking at QB's and 3-4 front players (OLB's and DL's) for our first two picks.

Here, watch these cherry picked highlights and fall in love with the wonder that is AJ Green

As for St. Louis, NFL Network was talking about how they're worried about being pegged with Julio Jones because they think other teams will notice that he's a good fit and jump them.
While I agree with the sentiment of building with the lines I still don't think you pass up someone like Green who has that combination of skill, smarts, and work ethic. Quinn will be good but I like to look at it this way. In 5 years would you have a better chance of convincing a team to trade Quinn for Green or Green for Quinn. Personally I think Green will be the type of player where you wouldn't even be able to offer up Orakpo and get him in a straight up trade.
Perhaps you are right about Green. No offense Dirt but while I think he is a very good player, in my eyes you are overestimating him. But perhaps you are correct.

I'm with Okie on this one. Rather than taking Green, should he be there at #10, we should get a king's ransom from the Rams if they want Green. We can still feed the front at #14 and have an extra pick for a NT or QB.

I think AJ Green is going to be a special talent. I'm not getting the Julio Jones love affair with fans. Jones wasn't a top 15 talent prior the combine, now all of a sudden he's a top 10 talent? Green was a top 5 talent prior to the draft and should stay that way.

People put too much emphasis on the NFL combine. (especially Al Davis)

I can kind of understand the Julio Jones love affair. I think the thing that really won him over with fans around the league is the fact that he ran a 4.39 at the combine on a foot that needed surgery. Still he's certainly worthy of a his mid first round grade. For starters he has the production you look for in a first round receiver (1,133 yards receiving, 1,265 yards total, 9 TD's). He's also hard working and doesn't come with the T.O. head case label. Not to mention the fact that he has ideal size.

Mayock was also talking about how NFL scouts like taking these players coached by Nick Saban as they feel that playing under Saban has helped a lot players prepare for playing at the NFL level (with one notable exception in Cincinnati).

I personally think we could work with him and develop him but he's not the type of receiver that I could justify passing up other players at other positions for at this point in time. Obviously I feel differently about another receiver in this same draft as evidenced by my last 3 post.

Ton's of offense taken. But seriously I certainly understand reservations about any receiver coming into the draft not named Calvin Johnson. I don't think that Green is as good as Calvin but I do think he is on that same level/tier coming into the league. I wouldn't be opposed at all though to a kings ransom should Green miraculously fall to us.

I think if they're able to secure an extra 2nd rounder, a guy like Leonard Hankerson could be a possibility

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Hankerson seems solid, good value pick in the 2nd. I am on the J. Jones bandwagon but not saying we should nab him at 10. I just wouldn't be upset if we did. He seems the closest thing to L. Fitzgerald that's come along, C. Johnson is an exception as he was off the charts. By that I mean that Jones has all the physical attributes and is a good guy. He also seems like a Shanahan guy.

Come to think of it, I could see us getting Jones or Green if available, then R. Hudson from FSU or the C from P. State in the 2nd, and not even drafting D till round 5. I'm kinda feeling like the D made strides at the end of the year w/Bryant at NT & Carriker playing well. Guys like Rob Jackson & J. Jarmon could be the x-factors in our draft strategy. If the staff feels like those guys are at least good stop-gap measures that can play a lot, they might not draft D early.

You could make the same argument in reverse: Armstrong might develop into a more complete WR, Kelly might finally get healthy, and Austin will start to "get it," so that WR is not as acute a need as some people think.

IMO last year's draft was heavy on offense and the defense finished #31 so I am hoping for a defense-oriented draft.

wow...kinda surprised. thought he might be 6-7th round pick at best, and more like a pratice squad guy. Good for him, like the way he has stuck with QB and said he really doesnt want to play unless its that position. Cool

Well just because he's coming to visit doesn't mean he wouldn't be 6th-7th round, though I think he's more like a 5th personally. And it's not uncommon for the Redskins to have visits with the local guys from Va Tech, Maryland, and Virginia

What about Torrey Smith? Didn't he average nearly 16 yards a reception last season with the Terps? I don't know much about him, but Mayock raved about him at the Combine. Can in Maryland fans fill in the blanks?

Don't know how reliable it is, but this person says Tyrod got a 15. On the low side for a QB. He definitely has the tools of an athlete. I know he says he won't switch positions, but I think he will move to a skill position in the NFL.
