Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

I have very mixed reviews for this first day's picks. From a value standpoint, we made out like bandits. All three picks were projected as first rounders and we got them in the early and late second round. We also needed help at the skills positions.

But, I wonder just how much added value these guys will bring. ARE, Kelly, or Thomas will be a #4 wideout? And using a second rounder on a backup TE? Moreover, we clearly have issues along the O-line, D-line and at our nickel corner. I wish we had spent one of those picks on Groves, Nicks, or some other O-lineman.

Value Grade: A
Overall: B
I would have thought they'd at least take a blocking TE
That's what I was thinking. Neither Cooley nor Davis is a natural blocker. We'll see, we'll see.

This was a disaster in my opinon...I was amped when we got Thomas when we did...that it went all downhill...why in the blue hell did we draft a tight end (when both Campbell AND Groves were on the board)...and DRAFT ANOTHER WR!?!??!! It makes zero sense to me.
I don't mind picking two receivers, I have seen it work in the past. Yes, D-Line could have been addressed (and should have rather than Davis - IMO). But two good receivers seems to me to be good when that was an area we were really deficient in.

We will get a D-Line guy in the 3rd and O-line depth in the 5-7th.
Well it'd be rounds 4,6, and 7 now

There are a lot of solid DTs left but who's at DE? Chris Ellis? Does someone like Pressley play DE at the next level? I know the team is high on Wilson and Buzbee but it seems kind of crazy right now.
maybe they are looking at the fact that ARE and moss will both be 29 this season (not that old i understand that) but 2 players that are also injury prone and felt that these 2 receivers were too good to pass up
Good point
Or perhaps he had glowing things to say about Campbell and they just didn't listen to him?
Maybe, I'm assuming if he was really going to the mat for the guy it would have made a difference. Maybe not. I'd just assume that if they liked what they saw on tape, and his old coach was vouching for him, that they would have gone that direction over a second pass catching TE. Just seems to make more sense to me that there was something they didn't like about him rather than Snyder and Cerrato just said 'screw you we want a TE sucker!' Maybe not. Impossible to know, I'm just saying what strikes me as more plausible.

Pretty good draft so far. Stockpiled on the offensive side of the ball. Red Zone scoring should be that much of a liability anymore. We got a couple of possible first rounders in the second round. Should be easier to sign and get into camp on time. I can't get too upset at who they took. We still have tomorrow so let's see what they can put together in the last several rounds.
I would have thought they'd at least take a blocking TE
Trying to make sense out of it all is to use Cooley in the slot or out wide and have Davis lined up tight. Davis should be considered a better blocker than Cooley. Now saying that Cooley will take on more of a wR role makes one wonder why draft two more WRs. Teams aren't going to trade for one of them. They'll wait until we'll have to cut one and get them as a FA.

I'm with you dude. But obviously, the coaches felt comfortable enough with the O and D-lines as they stand now, and didn't feel the need to use a high pick to address them.

The thing to remember though, is that Greg Blache was always the first to defend the D-line when they weren't getting close to the QB with the pass rush. Clearly, his opinion hasn't changed and is fine with the pressure these guys are able to generate.

Don't forget about the Compensatory 3rd (96). So technically it is 3, 4, 6, 7. They traded their third but still have that comp pick.

I felt that drafting an offensive lineman would have been a better way to go after we got one wide receiver. Vinny is just trying to be different, and I wish he'd go work for some other team.

I fear for our Defense next year. I don't see us getting somebody on day two who will help immediately. Let's hope that Vinnie finds some diamonds in the rough tomorrow.

Yeah. I know, given the pre-draft hype and then the trade, this is a big surprise. I am hoping hey know something I don't.

I am still confused by the Davis pick. Beast or not, in light of Campbell and Groves still being on the board, that was just not a necessary pick.

Let's judge the draft as a whole and then look at it in three years.

Yeah I just meant 4,6,7 instead of 5-7 for the OL depth, as Joe Redskin had said
