good players get cut if: they have huge contracts, or they are injury prone

Penn hasn't missed a game in several years, and his contract about average for a left tackle...... I cannot get excited about the 30th ranked tackle

I hope I am wrong about Penn

Per Rich Tandler Skins working to complete a deal to sign OT Penn.
We aren't going to sign Top 5 talent at every position during FA unless we go back to the Vinny of old mindset, which I hope no one hopes to return to.

You say Penn was the 30th ranked tackle. Was that at left or right tackle position? If it was at left, he might grade better as a RT as LT is seen as a premium position over RT. Either way, he may not be the best tackle in the league but I find anyone hard pressed to openly state their belief that Penn is a downgrade from Polumbus.

Sign away!!
In post after post, you quote these rankings, wherever you're getting them from, as if they're the gospel. Wise up! They don't mean jack. On one site he may be ranked 30th, on another he may be ranked 16th. Even if the rankings you reference did mean something, he was ranked based on his play at Left Tackle. We're trying to sign him to play another position - Right Tackle.

Personally, I don't give a tinker's dam where he is ranked in a vacuum by any football geek. All I care about is that he has been evaluated by my team's personnel executives and coaches and they have concluded that he is a good fit for our team at RT.
This. Preach on brother man. I would feel much more comfortable about the Oline. If we could get a good guard in the draft with the OT positions shored up, I'd feel even better!!

Kenny Britt has left New England w/o a deal. He is on his way to us.

Or if they are poor scheme fits, or if the team signs someone who is even better, or if someone in the FO just hates the player personally, or there is legal trouble, or...I can keep on going. Teams release players for many different reasons.

He's gonna be awesome for the half that he plays. But who will be SS for the other 15 1/2 games?

bleh. This must mean our young guys are getting every chance due them to step it up and grab a starters spot. Lets hope at least one of them is up for the challenge. It wouldn't sting as bad as Kelly/Thomas if they were both busts, but it seems safeties are alot more rare to find than WRs. Lets hope one of em starts to make a starters type contribution. It would save us alot of money as well as yards in the short term at least!

I think Phillip Thomas does win out on that job and becomes a very solid player for us.

I still have high hopes for Phillip Thomas as our eventual starter at SS.

Actually, I'm fine with signing Meriweather. I like hard hitters.

The hard hitting I don't mind. It is the stupid hitting that bothers me.

The Giants have done a fair bit to address one of their glaring weaknesses by signing Thurmond and Rogers-Cromartie (and Demps). They had secondary, O-line, and RB to worry about, but there's no question they have improved the defensive backfield. I am hoping we still make some strides in that area, as well as our O-line.

Is Thomas going to be ready to start?

a) he is still a rookie in terms of game experience
b) a Lisfranc injury like his takes a LONG time to heal - just ask Joe Red. Will he be healthy at the start of the season?
