When Randy Moss signed with New England, they signed him to a reasonable contract, and no ridiculous trade value = Win for the Patriots

When Oakland signed Wilfork, they gave up future picks, and took on a heavy contract = loss for the Raiders (win for Pats longterm by gaining valuable picks)

When Asante Samuels left the Pats, the Eagles took him on to fill a specific need at a reasonable cost = win for the Eagles.
Do you mean Seymour? LOL. In the short term, I think New England lost a lot by getting rid of Seymour. The lost their pass rush and one of the defensive leaders on the team. With Seymour, they could have found themselves in a better place this season and would probably still be alive in the playoffs.

On a related note, I think ppl need to chill the F out with the "no free agency". A good team is built through both the draft and free agency. Just because our incompetent front office has made terrible deals for free agents, doesn't mean that we shouldn't get any free agents now that we have what appears to be a competent FO.

Excellent point. Use the draft to put the nucleus of the team together. Use free agency sparingly to intelligently fill in remaining holes. This is what good teams seem to do.

Bruce Allen uses free agency to build the nucleus of the team, at least he did in Tampa Bay.

I should know to check the names. :) Yeah Seymour that's it, that's the ticket!

Well, we will need to see how that's going to work out here with Shanahan. As I said, we need a balance of drafted rookies and free agents. The problem is that we're still haunted by terrible deals such as the trades for Lloyd and Duckett.

In that aspect, Allen has always been good about trades, rarely trading draft picks for other teams veterans.

I guess that was Bruce Allens way of rebelling. "I'll show you Dad, when I'm a GM I won't trade draft picks for aging over the hill veterans."

"Saving draft picks? What kind of liberal boo-hockey is that?"

Question is Larry Johnson a free agent?

At best a guy who can get over 1,000 yards rushing. At worst a replacement for Mike Sellers.
Here is a good breakdown of the Final 8 restrictions in an uncapped year, granted it is from PFT but it's still a pretty good analysis, even if there is no way I am rooting for Dallas this weekend!
Why are we looking at a free agent list? I thought the Redskins had changed their ways. Going after high priced free agents is not the way to go. Develop from within, build through the draft. That should be the new mantra!
ummmmm... you can't fill every need with draft picks

nobody said that we're never going to sign a free agent again.. all of the top teams do it

Re: 2010 Free Agents
bruce allen has always preferred veteran players. in tampa bay, he was limited in his ability to sign "high priced" free agents because the ownership was very frugal. Allen has already gone on record saying the #1 reason he feels he will have success here (where others like Gibbs and Shottenheimer have failed) is the uncapped year. We have every reason to expect a very large number of aging veterans to make up our 2010 roster.

While this is certainly not a way to build long-term success, it shouldnt "kill" us the way snyders spending sprees did in the past for atleast 2 reasons i can think of: 1) Bruce Allen, while having a thoroughly unimpressive draft history, is known for keeping his draft picks. he won't trade draft picks for old players. rather, he'll sign the best of the free agent class. 2) since 2010 will be uncapped, any contracts signed can be "front-loaded" to ensure the skins have plenty of room if/when a salary cap is reinstated.
If that's the case then I hope that we do it the NE way with the older vets.
I didnt Richard Seymore will be an unrestricted free agent. If we switch to a 3-4 defense, he'd be worth picking up.
You'd have to think that they'll re-sign him.. he wasn't too happy about going there to begin with though, so we'll see.

Re: 2010 Free Agents

If we do in fact switch to a base 3-4 defense, I think we have to hope to nab a guy like UFA NT Casey Hampton to anchor the defense. I just don't trust Haynesworth to play NT, especially since he missed 25% of the season due to injury and 20% of the snaps in the games in which he appeared. Besides, he's likely be more effective at DE than NT in a 3-4 scheme.

I also think we'll need another MLB. I don't see too many viable 3-4 MLBs available in free agency, but perhaps Brandon Spikes will fall to the top of the second.

So, my dream offseason would look something like this....

Trading the 4th pick for Denver's 1st (11th overall) and first 2nd rounder (45th overall).
Drafting OT Bruce Campbell with the 11th pick
Drafting ILB Brandon Spikes with the 37th pick
Drafting OT Jason Fox with the 45th pick
Acquiring UFA OG/C Ben Hamilton to compete with Casey Rabach and Randy Thomas
Acquiring UFA NT Casey Hampton to anchor the 3-4 defense
