They play a lot of nickle defense, which is a little difference than base 4-3 from what I understand (Nickle D has two smaller edge rushers, whereas in 4-3 base, you have one DE rusher and one larger run stuffing DE on the other side).

If they go base 4-3, they'd have Ionnidis, Allen, Payne, and Kerrigan in the d-line. They could have Ryan Anderson (SLB), Shaun Dion Hamilton (MLB), and R. Foster (WLB) as Linebackers. I think going base 4-3 would allow them to use Ionnidis and Ryan Anderson more often.
I doubt Ionnidas plays DE in a 4-3 but Smith if he is back and Kerrigan would be much better as a 4-3 DE.

It seems like Kerrigan is awkward when he has to make reads and he looks terrible in coverage.

As a 4-3 DE, he would be playing to his strengths every down.

IMO the biggest difference between 4 - 3 and Nickel D is the last one is a 4 - 2 - 5 personnel, not a 4 - 3 - 4. So you do have 4 DLs but only 2 LBs. And since it's more used in passing downs, I guess yeah the 2 ends usually are edge rushers.

I still don't understand the obsession over 3-4 vs 4-3. We flex between the two schemes. I don't care which we run, we need a defensive coordinator who's better at disguising and being aggressively unpredictable.
Well, lets start with R Foster learning to focus and more importantly, making smarter life decisions.

Z Brown was great the first half of the season, but his play lagged the second half...like most the defense. He was injured, I don't know what that injury was exactly.

Ive been happy with Brown's play since he has been here.
Torn oblique I think. On one hand it could be a serious reason why he wasn't as good this year. On the other hand, it could be a weak excuse. And on the third hand, who do we hold accountable for a linebacker known for his athleticism (not his brains) trying to play through a major injury that would compromise his effectiveness? Jesus fuck'n christ.

Almost like a Grilliams, so to speak (he's the last coordinator I felt who was effective at disguising schemes).

The only reason I brought it up is because Keim and JP Findlay said that some players have brought this up in conversations. I think Keim agrees with your sentiments, but he did say he feel that given the current personnel, it now makes sense to have this discussion.

Of course, this is a moot point until we know who's going to be the (hopefully) new defensive coordinator.

They are our best defensive players and they are supposed to watch 2 gaps rather than get up field as their first responsibility.

Kerrigan and Smith are terrible in coverage and should never ever be dropped.

With our personnel, I think a 4-3 or single gap 3-4 would be better than the current 2 gap.

Honestly I can't wait to switch so we can stop hearing about it and people will see the change will mean pretty much nothing. Then in 5 years people will want to switch back to the 3-4.

DL: Ionnidas, Payne, Allen

LB: Kerrigan, SDH, Foster, Allen

Of that front 7, five are Alabama guys who played together for 2-3 years in college.
Just saying ...

Side note you're the one calling me names but I'm the one harassing you... Totally makes sense.

This is one of the points Cooley made, saying he thinks RK in particular is way more efficient when playing one gap than 2. We play base defense 30 to 40% of snaps but that is still a fair share of snaps, so I don't think it is that un-significant.

He isnt good when he is forced to make a lot of decisions or reads quickly.

He literally can't cover any regular eligible receiver on any current nfl roster, so why put him in that position.

The 2 gap misuse of talent is really Allen, Payne and Ioannidas (the 3 down lineman). Even Settle is pretty fast twitch and can get up field. All of them can take a guard or center and put them in the qb's lap. Release the hounds and let them ball.

The misuse of Kerrigan and Smith's talent is not having them getting up field as their first assignment and playing run on the way to the qb.

They do rush frequently in base 3-4 but usually standing up. And every time either drops into coverage a cute baby animal surely dies.
