Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
mooby, i feel you. i also saw meet the Spartans yesterday, and really don't think ill ever see another spoof movie. anyone with any intentions of seeing this, forget it. on a side note, my son brought home saw 4. too me, best one since the original. if you get a chance, and like this style, rent it

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I saw Mr. Woodcock today, I thought it was pretty decent but kinda predictable. Overall though it wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that great.
Yesterday I went to the theaters and saw Meet the Spartans, honestly that is the biggest piece of crap I have ever wasted 10 bucks on. I mean, not before in my life have I ever seen a movie that I thought sucked as bad as that. They basically took 300 and made it a 90 minute long gay joke with little shitty jokes dispersed randomly in it. The only parts that I thought were a littlet funny were shown in the commercials, which is the entire reason I wanted to see it in the first place despite the fact that the commercial for it wasn't entirely appealing. Either way the next time I think about going to see a spoof movie in theaters, I'm going to think back to yesterday and tell myself never again. There will never be a spoof movie coming out that I won't be willing to wait for it to make it's inevitable appearance on HBO or one of those channels in a few months.
Are you sure about that? You may wanna rent "Date Movie" and then make a decision about which one sucked more. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I just rented and watched the last Harry Potter movie, Bourne Ultimatum and Munich. All three were very good, I thought, especially Munich.
Are you sure about that? You may wanna rent "Date Movie" and then make a decision about which one sucked more.
I've seen Date Movie, honestly out of that, Meet the Spartans, and Epic Movie I'd rate Date Movie 2nd, Epic 3rd, and Meet the Spartans first in terms of which sucked more. I probably should've known judging from Date and Epic Movie, but the commercials for Meet the Spartans, even though it didn't look like something I absolutely needed to see, it looked like something that I would probably enjoy or at least call it about normal. Dmek, I saw Saw 4 in theaters and I really enjoyed it, I liked Saw 3 better but I think Saw 3 was the best one, Saw 4 was probably 2nd though. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
My wife and I watched "Epic Movie" the other day, and it was atrocious. So I definitely will wait on "Meet The Spartans".
We watched "Shooter" yesterday, and I thought it was pretty good. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I saw Breach saturday night on HBO, I thought it was just about one of the best movies I've seen recently, I like the way it went even though some of the stuff was made up just to add to the value of the film.

Having a bad day at work? I think Rambo averages nearly one death per minute (83 deaths to 93 minutes). Very therapeutic. Of course, if you're silly and things like plot and acting are important to you then you may want to pass.

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I saw "No Country For Old Men" last week.
I went there with high hopes with all of the awards it's been nominated for. But I guess my expectations were too high. There was pretty good tension in the first 75% of the film, then it just went nowhere. For those that have seen it, please explain Tommy Lee Jones' monologue at the very end. I was completely lost with what he was trying to say. I'm a fan of the Coen brothers too. I really don't get all the acclaim it's been getting. Just didn't do anything for me. Two stars out of four. |

But really, spoofs as a form of comedy is really cheating if you ask me. Anytime you have to base your comedy from another film, it shows a complete lack of originality. I mean, I know they're not supposed to be original, but it just demonstrates laziness on the part of writers and filmmakers. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Finally saw "No Country for old men", and it blew my pants off.
Even with the high expectations... I thought it was phenomenal. Reminded me of something Aranofsky might do, but w/ alot more action. Thought it was interesting that there was virtually no music throughout the film. 5 stars in my book. |

that was easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen right up there with Battlefield Earth. it didn't even have a single action scene that could come close to making up for the lack of a plot and/or acting. as far as "No Country for Old Men", I watched it yesterday and have absolutely no idea how that movie warranted as much hype as it did. The guy who played the assassin was cool, but the movie lacked anything remotely like a Best Picture worthy story and it's last 20 minutes was lackluster to say the least. |

But it's technically a near flawless film... it's going to be used over and over in film classes to dissect elements like cinematography, pacing and writing. * Spoilers * The movie works because it accomplishes the vision of the original book. NCFOM is a thematic movie, moreso than character-driven. The Coens have a knack for straying from traditional film structure- you didn't really have a "good guy protagonist" to root for, per se... there was Brolin's character, who played an average Joe- the audience wants him to get away with the money, but he still pulls off an unethical action (stealing money that's not his). Bardem's psycho character is definitely not the guy to root for, but he displays his own abstract sense of morality. And Tommy Lee Jones was the dude that verbalizes McCarthy's (the original book's author) overarching message- the world is becoming evil and good can no longer stop it... only fate can hope to stumble it... Leaving out the death scenese for major characters is intentional to the overall theme. You're left wondering "wtf" during certain aftermath shots (and the ending) b/c the storytelling is so un-Hollywood. The movie's not wrapped up in a bowtie at the end and that surely pissed a bunch of people off. /film geekness |

But with NCFOM, the ending just left me feeling no emotion what so ever. No "WTF" or a "hell yeah", just a "is that the end?" kind of thing. Pacing was decent and I wasn't blown away by the cinematography, but like I said the lack of any real substantial story or even character development just left me feeling like I had wasted the last almost 2 hours. I guess I just had different expectations tied to a movie of such high acclaim and felt like I had seen a completely different movie than everyone else. oh and anyone looking for a good popcorn action flick, Doomsday was a kewl nod to classics like Road Warrior and Escape From New York. |

Awesome that you saw Dog Soldiers too... very slept on. Just saw Doomsday today- very different from the other two, but extremely enjoyable as what it was. Like the influences you mentioned above, it definitely payed homage to a bunch of different films (but stamped its own identity just the same). The guy knows how to shoot action and violence for sure. |

Just saw "Into the wild".
Amazing little movie. I hit up one of those Redbox things in the grocery store and just rented it because I thought it looked good. Never heard of it... just sort of a spur of the moment decision. Emile Hirsch puts on a pretty solid performance... If you're kind of a hippie you'll love this movie. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
POSSIBLE SPOILER
I recently saw Stop Loss and I am torn on wheter or not I like this movie. You must realize what it is first, which is a ploy to unite the bleeding hearts of the world to feel sorry for the U.S. servicesmembers who got stop lossed during Iraqi Freedom. It uses nothing but the pathos side of the argument all of the way through, but I will get more into that later. Secondly, this is a film made by Hollywood that attempts to bring you a story that hits home. Of course in Hollywood they have to spice it up a bit, because real life is apparently, boring. Now before I rip this film to shreds I would like to point out that the acting was dead on. The actors really nailed the mannerisims, speech, and humor posessed by the average Army Soldier (each branch is slightly different). I also like the fact that the enlisted soldiers were getting some love in this movie. Most other military movies are always about those damn officers. Now, in the beginning of the movie you saw a vehicle rapidly approaching a checkpoint. It would have gotten shot at if it hadn't slowed down within 50ft. In the movie it stopped at the last second, so it didn't get shot, but it would have at least gotten inspected. When the second vehicle approached, it did get shot at, because it shot at the soldiers. When it drove off the soldiers chased it. Later in the movie they say that it was Standard Operating Proceedure. I can assure you that it is in no-ones proceedures to chase a vehicle away and into an alley. You might call in air support to track it down (if feesable). We are smarter than that. I could go over all the things wrong in the alley, but that would take too long. Without going into much more detail here are the rest of the flaws. A LT. COL and a SSG would not have been buddy buddy like they were in that movie. A Stop Loss is issued to either an entire MOS or to an entire Unit. In other words, both the Sergeant (Sniper school guy) and the Staff Sergeant (Main character) would have been stop lossed. Both were infantry, both were in the same unit, and both were ETSing (getting out). Not everybody suffers from PTSD when they come home, but the movie portrayed it that way. (It was excellent acting though) You will not get kicked out for getting drunk all of the time. You will get busted and your life will be miserable for a while, but you will not get kicked out. At least not as fast as the PFC was. The Army does not use the old hand to hand techniques displayed in that movie. The old techniques kept getting soldiers asses whooped whenever they went on leave. Combatitives (similar to Bazillian Jujitsu or submission fighting) is used now instead. The main Character would have been demoted to E-5 or SGT (possibly even E-4 in times of war) after beating up 2 MP's (If not Court Martialed). And the headlock in the final fight scene at the graveyard was not locked. Basically they made the main character and SSG's look like Puss***. Everyone who enlists signs up for an 8 year obligation, and they are aware of it from day 1. The amount of years active duty vs. inactive duty is up to you unless you are at war. After 8 years they cannot stop loss you unless you are indefinate (over 10 and going to retire). The main character had 9 years. He would not have been Stop Lossed. I can delve into this even deeper, but I have hit most of the points that I wanted to. |

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I still haven't seen Juno or No Country For Old Men. I'd like to see both but I'm probably gonna wait until they hit HBO or one of the other movie channels on t.v.. Anyways, here are a few of my thoughts on movies I've seen recently.
I saw Fracture the other week, and I thought it was one of the most well put together films I've seen in recent memory. I absolutely loved the plot and the ending was great too. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good crime drama involving the courts. I saw Blades of Glory as well about a month ago, and I actually thought it was a really funny movie. I wasn't expecting much of it because i'm not interested in ice skating and I thought it was just gonna be another Will Ferrell acts retarded (i.e. Talladega Nights) movie but he was really funny in it, along with Jon Heder. If you've got some free time and nothing else is on check it out. I don't know if I said anything about American Gangster, but I figured I'd say something about it since it just came out on DVD. That movie probably ranks in my top five, and I only saw it once when it came out in theaters. It's definitely a movie to watch, and something I'm definitely gonna get on dvd when i get the chance. Denzel does another great job acting in it and Russell Crowe didn't do a half bad job at playing the cop who takes him down. Flyboys is coming on tomorrow night on Showtime and I'm gonna check that out, I haven't seen it yet but I like classic war movies and it looks good so I'm gonna check that out. I saw Freedomland a while back, and I thought it was okay. If nobody's heard about it, the basic premise is that this lady's son goes missing, and this detective (Samuel Jackson) tries to help her find him amid all this tension between cops and the citizens who live in the slums where she lives. It was okay but the plot didn't really keep me intrigued. One movie that I thought was really good and definitely worth watching was Jet Li's Fearless. Very inspiring story of a martial artist who lives in China around the 1920's (I think). ////////SPOILER\\\\\\\\ The reason I thought this was such an awesome movie was because Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li) is this martial artist who only cares about winning and being the best, and it comes back to bit him because he kills his former master and so one of his former master's disciples kills his wife and daughter. So Yuanjia stops fighting in these contests and goes way out into the countryside, where this blind girl and her grandmother revitalize him and show him the error of his ways. He stops being this arrogant asshole who only cares about winning and transforms into this guy who sees Wushu (the fighting style he uses) as a way to unite the Chinese people and make the country stronger. /////END SPOILER\\\\\ Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li) is actually the founder of the Jin Wu Sports Federation (anyone in martial arts probably has heard of them as they are actually a big organization today) and it's a true story. It was very inspiring to me because it really shows that a person can change for the better. I'd definitely check that out. Alpha Dog is a good movie too. It's another true story about something that happened back at the turn of the century. These guys kidnap the younger brother of a guy who owes one of them a bunch of money because of drugs, and long story short the kid stays with them a while and ////////SPOILER\\\\\\\ they kill him at the end. //////END SPOILER\\\\\ Overall though it's a very sad story because it's true. Another good film worth checking out. Another thing you guys might want to check out is something I found on another forum. It's all about movies coming out in the next few years. This link is 30 upcoming sequels coming out in the next few years.
