When I was in Aruba on my honeymoon I had several Balashi, a pilnser they brew right on the island. Totally decent. Not spectacular, but pretty good.

Had Evolution Summer Session over the weekend. An unfiltered ale (to me, it had similar tones to a Belgium White) with a nice lemon bite to it. Definitely comparable to Sam Adams Summer Ale.

twas pretty damn good not much of the pepper flavor from what I recall but some good smokiness |
re: Let's talk
After getting my USCIS badge, I went to Capital City Brewing Company for lunch and had a burger and their Red Wheat and Blue seasonal. A belgian wheat with a raspberry/blueberry finish. After I ordered it, I had 2nd thoughts, thinking since it's a fruit beer that it would be on the sweet side. It wasn't sweet, and the berry flavor complimented the beer justly.

re: Let's talk
nice. will have to try
spreaking of fruit Samuel Smith cider is good anyone had the DFH shelter pale ale? |

Fruit beers can be tricky. I like them as long as the fruit is squarely in the background and doesn't overpower the beer. |

You betcha. A good beer and a nice transition into the rest of their line. I haven't had one in several years because I tend to run towards their IPAs, but the Shelter Pale Ale is worth trying. |

And this one was in the background complimenting the wheat beer, and afterthought so to speak. |
re: Let's talk
Just started brewing my own beer. I'm pretty excited. Started simple because, well... I'm sure I'll screw it up.
I'm brewing a Washington apple ale, and adding a little bit of finishing hops to give it a little kick. Went here to get all the ingredients. Maryland HomeBrew warehouse and online store for home brew and wine making, brew your own supplies. Kegging, corks, recipes, ingredient kits. They were ridiculously helpful, so if anyone was thinking about doing it, try here. I literally just brought my recipe and they weighed everything I needed out for me. |

You will find with practice and patience you can brew beer at better quality than anything you can get in a store. I also use Maryland homebrew, they are really nice and helpful. Good luck with your new hobby it can get quite addictive. |

One of my good friends met the brewmaster and actually went to a DFH tasting event here in Richmond bout 6 months ago...dont know if this is the same guy. ...Anyway DFH...I cant say anything bad bout these guys. Been around, established Microbrew, but I cant say favorite to anyone of their beers. Solid, but not great...120 Ipa i had twice, its a real treat. I think 90 min is overrated a bit, but I know that beer gets alot of dap. I need to try more of their beers. Want to say ive had 4-5 types |

Kind of a meet and greet tasting. The guy from Stone was there two weeks ago with 40 of theirs on tap. |

Brewing from a Mr. Beer kit kinda sucks. Very bare bones with no control. Brewing with the right equipment and ingredients make all the difference. |
re: Let's talk
After reading an article on which 6 Munich breweries are permitted to serve beer at Oktoberfest (Löwenbräu, Spaten, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr), I picked up a 6er of Polaner Oktoberfest Marzen yesterday. I can see why Oktoberfest can get out of hand. Drinking liters of it at a time will make anyone nice and happy. The Marzen has a nice smooth taste and goes down quite easy.

re: Let's talk
While up in Maryland over Thanksgiving, I went to my uncles whos been a homebrewer for like 15 years. Got to sample some of his homebrews which where pretty solid while talking bout our favorite breweries. He then pulled out a couple of his favorite beers from these breweries, one was one bad mutherf*cker, called Pliney the Elder from Russian River Brewery outta Cali. I havent tryed looking for it here in Richmond, it might be tough, but apparently it can be found in Pennslyvania, Maryland and Delaware....if you like a solid double IPA do yourself a favor and pick it up if you can find it.

re: Let's talk
I've heard of but never tried Pliny The Elder, but have heard it's awesome. I have a bottle shop here that has some unique and rarer beers, and will have to look for that and see if they have any bottles of DFH's Bitches Brew.

I saw a bottle of Bitches Brew this weekend at a small city spot, passed it up for this: DuganA IPA - Avery Brewing Company - Boulder, CO - BeerAdvocate Kinda glad I did, that beer above was incredible. re: Let's talk
I have never found pliney the elder in maryland, been looking for years. Bitches brew was awesome. Get it while you can, they are sold out everywhere. Corridoor fine win sold out 60 cases of 750's in less then a week. Now they are hoping they can get two more but don't know if it will happen.

Im gonna send my uncle an email to see how he got his hands on Pliney...I looked on their distribution and the only thing east coast I saw was a major distributer out of Philly. The Pliney he had was out of a 22 oz, but think he had a nice stash of them, lives in the south-east part of the state right near the bay, so I have no clue how he got his hands on them. |
re: Let's talk
My brother left some Stone IPA at my house over Thanksgiving. I left it in the garage until I got home from work last week and didn't have any other beer to drink. Didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me. Not a huge fan of IPAs, but this stuff is good!

re: Let's talk
Couple weeks ago had couple really good beers:
Southern Tier 2 x IPA 2XIPA - Southern Tier Brewing Company - Lakewood, NY - BeerAdvocate Pretty good, one of the better Southern Tiers Ive had Great Divide Fresh Hop Pale Ale Fresh Hop Pale Ale - Great Divide Brewing Company - Denver, CO - BeerAdvocate F*cking excellent beer, always good. A really citrus-hoppy beer. I might have to move to Colorado just based on abundantly great breweries. Then I had a couple disappointments: Mad Hatter IPA New Holland Mad Hatter India Pale Ale - New Holland Brewing Company - Holland, MI - BeerAdvocate Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale: Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale - Smuttynose Brewing Company - Portsmouth, NH - BeerAdvocate Really surprised by the Smuttynose, their pretty solid usually |
re: Let's talk
That fresh hop sounds tasty, I'll have to look for that one
|
re: Let's talk
Got a chance to try brew dog sink the bismark which is 41%. Very pleased for what it was. More like rum with a strong hop profile but was easier to drink than liquor.

re: Let's talk
I picked up a bottle of Sam Adams Infinium the other day. Probably have my hopes up WAY too much for it, but oh well; I think I'm going to save it for New Years.

re: Let's talk
^^^ So I save this for tonight, popped the cork at around 10:30 or 11 and by the first sip I could tell that this is a headache in a fancy bottle. I've been WAY too excited about finally trying this and personally I'm disappointed and I can't say I'd recommend it. To me it tastes like a Trappist or a lambic (I'm not a big fan of either) with champagne literally mixed in. Very dry and kind of fruity. I wish I had stuck with the Heavy Seas Ocktoberfest that is still available at my liquor store. Oh well, Happy New Year!!!
|
re: Let's talk
speaking of lambic.. had 2 lindeman's tonight.. the raspberry and peach

A very nice brown ale. Moose Drool Brown Ale
good name...important note in the beer's description: enough hops so not to taste too sweet. Thats the turn off for me with half the browns out there too sweet. Here in Richmond this Brown gets around. Not bad, Legend Brewery: Brown Ale - Legend Brewing Company - Richmond, VA - BeerAdvocate gotta support your local brewerys, Legend is solid |
re: Let's talk
Was in dc and picked up some Bells two hearted ale and Founders rye PA, neither are available in Md and was floored at how good they were. The two hearted ale might be the best beer I've ever had. Still looking for Pliney the elder though.
