Re: Eli Manning's 6-Year, $97.5 Million Extension One of NFL's Biggest Deals
I don't think that Eli's contract is that ridiculous. He is a proven clutch QB. Now if you want to look at idiotic contracts I would discuss Nate Clements, Asomugha or Stafford's deal before I would focus on Eli's.
I think that Eli owes a lot of this deal to Burress and a great offensive line but I don't think that the Giants made a terrible move by locking him up. In a few years this contract probably won't look so out of line.
I think the owners would have a lockout, but could you imagine if they play with an uncapped season in 2010? Some of these owners will spend money like drunken sailors in a nudie bar and that $97MM might seem like a "bargain". |
Re: Eli Manning's 6-Year, $97.5 Million Extension One of NFL's Biggest Deals
McNabb's contract says: you're are quarterback of the present, we're going to pay you to win while we build for the future, while Eli's screams, "we have no plan so please win us some games this year."
LOL..........??? HUH? |
Re: Eli Manning's 6-Year, $97.5 Million Extension One of NFL's Biggest Deals
Seriously...the argument is basically "yeah but he has a ring?" HE DIDN'T WIN THEM THEIR SB. If you want to argue that he did then do so...but the fact that they won a SB with as QB. in and of itself, is not reason to give him a bank breaking deal. Is he worth it? Does paying him that money make sense? To me, no. I'd rather pay a ringless QB of comparable skill and value half that and use the other half to find some offensive weapons to help my new QB win us another SB. But that's just me I guess.

Eli didn't crumble under pressure like Romo does, either. He's gotten it done when it counts and not every middle-of-the-road qb can do that. |

The argument is what I posted in #154 but yes he did win their super bowl,he was the only Giant QB to take a snap and has the MVP trophy to prove it. |
Re: Eli Manning's 6-Year, $97.5 Million Extension One of NFL's Biggest Deals
I personally don't think he's worth that massive contract, but at least he has proven that he can win the superbowl. If the contract is not cap-friendly then it ties more money into one player, which is good for the redskins. But a redskins fans like myself can't really say much considering the Haynesworth deal. Now if the redskins win the superbowl, then I will do much more trash talking.

I have a couple of issues with the "what is Haynesworth making?" argument: One - Eli is making a lot more. Haynesworth's deal is basically 4 for $48M and I don't think they overpaid because multiple teams were in the same ballpark. The reason the Redskins landed him was they offered more guaranteed. Two - Haynesworth is seen as the absolute best player at his position in the National Football League. He has tools that no one else at his spot possess. Three - Our team needed a pass rusher. He fit the bill perfectly. All the early results look like he was money well spent. |

I've said it before- he had a great stretch run in 2007 that carried on into the playoffs, and he won the big one. He was also part of possibly the greatest play in Super Bowl history. I'm not trying to diminish any of that. But if Eli's career thus far has shown us anything, it's that that phenomenal stretch in late 2007 was more an anomaly than the norm. His career passer rating is very middle of the road, and he's thrown 74 INTs in just 4 full seasons as a starter. Not to mention his yardage total last year was nearly identical to Campbell's. How clutch was he down the stretch last year? He was playing behind the best line in football with THREE very good RB's, and he still couldn't manage to throw a TD to a WR in the last 4 games. Their offense faltered, and it culminated with a downright ugly performance in a 1st round playoff loss. He's a good QB, don't get me wrong. But he's not great, and he sure as hell doesn't deserve to be the highest paid QB in the league. Not even close really. |

Now that we have gotten that cleared up. Who cares what Eli got? It's more money against their cap number. I wish that they would have given him even more now that I think about it. |

Sorry if this is in the thread at an earlier post (I only read a few pages), how does everyone think this will impact JC's contract talks if he has a good year & we get to the playoffs?
I don't see JC getting as much, but I think JC is about on par w/Manning at this point but has more upside due to his running ability. |

Seems though that to some, the losses are far more often his fault and the wins are somebody else's credit. Can't really have it both ways. So if Rivers gets the same money, then what should Campbell get? |

Uh... Eli is a pretty good quarterback. Look at the Giants record since he has been there. I may be going out on a limb here, but I have an inkling the last thing that Daniel Snyder will do is give Campbell a hundred million dollar contract. |
Re: Eli Manning's 6-Year, $97.5 Million Extension One of NFL's Biggest Deals
I think calling Eli a clutch quarterback is kinda simplifying the entire picture, in the sense that while Eli has been clutch in the past, mostly in regular season games, as well as in points of the '07 postseason including the Super Bowl, he's also had his share of bad performances as well.
I wouldn't say that Eli is a bad quarterback either. His career stats aren't that great but we all know they don't tell the whole story. Eli has led them to wins in games where they were behind, so he is clutch to a certain degree. But I'm not gonna call him clutch in the postseason considering every year besides '07 he has contributed to the Giants being one and done in the postseason. It's just in '07 he was good enough and he was a decent contributor to their Super Bowl run. You can't count him out simply because he was the guy that led them down the field when they absolutely had to score, and you can't also say the guy has been clutch every time they've needed him to be either. So basically he's a middle of the ground quarterback who's had his high moments and his low moments. The only reason he got paid like an elite quarterback is the fact that his highest moment came at the right time on the biggest stage of the NFL. I'm sure that any other quarterback who did that and has had several clutch moments (mostly regular season though) would be getting paid like he did as well. |

yeahhhh righttttt, Eli has started 72 games straight.Oh all of Alberts seasons how many times has he played a whole 16(straight) games, and the quote "he is the best at his position" ...well maybe he was the best avaliable at the time ,I agree with that. 1. Kevin Williams - Minnesota Vikings 94 games started, 42.5 sacks, 4 INTs, 5 forced fumbles, 4 TDs, 223 tackles, *4-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro Kevin Williams is without question the very best defensive tackle in the entire NFL. ....and has only mised 2 games in his whole career. |

We should not forget that Eli's contract is a long one and wages go up every year. By the end of the deal Eli likely will not be close to being the best-paid qb because other contracts will have surpassed his by then.
