re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Rocky will likely be traded regardless. In a 3-4, you need 2 starting pass rushing 3-4 OLBs(i.e Ware and Spencer,, Harrison and whoever is across from him) and depth to back them up. Rocky doesn't fit that bill.

Bad for team chemistry? Every team in the NFL is doing the same exact thing?? The players should be pissed at the players union for allowing this to happen. The Redskins are simply doing what they're supposed to be doing. Saying it will affect the locker room and team chemistry is a bit of a reach... |

Well Florio commented that by only giving Brandon Marshall a 1st round tender, the Broncos were essentially letting teams know they were ready to move him. It could be the same here - the skins are placing a lower tender on him to let teams know we want to move him. Or, knowing no one would give up a first for him, let alone a first and a third, the skins just offered him the lower of the two tenders. |
re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Can't blame Rocky for being upset, there are a lot of players upset about being caught between a rock and a hard place right now. A bunch of guys are missing out on potential big pay days. He knows it's the nature of the business though, I don't see him being a long term distraction.
As for Heyer getting tendered I say why not? You can't get rid of everyone overnight with a limited FA pool out there and only 5 draft picks. |
re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
if he gets seriously injured, hes done for his career. if he gets a hammy injury and misses 5 games next year, he goes into a FA with question marks that would diminish his opportunity to get a good deal.
if we sign dansby to a multi year deal, i think rocky will be real pissed. we drafted this guy, watch him slowly develop into a decent linebacker, then when he is set to hit FA after playing on a 5 yr rookie deal we slap him with a 1 yr 1 million dollar tender? rocky = dansby, atleast stats wise they are almost identical. lets low ball a skins player who has done nothing try and do what he is asked, and then give money to a FA linebacker who wants to get paid? havent we heard this story before? dont we know how it will end? dont give me that "its a business" crap. right, its a business when we are going to low ball your worth b/c we can but it's "family" when we hit pre-season and regular season and need you to go out and play your hardest without worrying about injury. how willing is rocky going to be to sacrifice his body for the team after this?
I hear you on the Dansby arguement...I dont think Dansby is a fit here and I think he is going to demand just a crazy figure, not Peppers crazy, but a tier below something like 7-8 mill per year. Id say no to Dansby, but I would wait on Rocky to see how he fits in the scheme before extending at this point. Like I said before, Rocky been solid. |

is the marshall tender a 2010 1st round or just A 1st round tender

Does this mean Jason Campbell is essentially on the trading block? If the Redskins aren't in position to take whatever quarterback they covet this year, I wonder who the starter will be?

Is there any news on Carlos Rogers being tendered???

Saying it will affect the locker room and team chemistry is a bit of a reach...
yeah it may be a stretch but not by much. rocky is going to be making the same money other depth players will (golston, doughty, heyer, etc) yet he is a starter and has been a starter for years. so rocky has to take 400 more snaps than golston but still gets paid the same next year? after playing 5 years on a rookie contract as a starter no less? if dansby is signed and rocky has to play next to him, doing the same thing he is but for 5 million less with no guaranteed future, i think it is fair to say he his going to be pissed. playing 5 years with these guys im going to assume he has made some friends = players whispering about skins FO not paying their players and giving money to FAs. i just hope rocky's locker isnt next to carlos' whom i believe he will have alot in common with since he will most likely be playing under a cheap tender while his counterpart hall got "shown the money" for a decent 7 game stretch. in the offseason: "its a business rocky, no body said it was fair." 5 mins before kickoff: "were a family! we stick together! gives us all you got out there today! WERE GOING TO WAR! rah rah rah stuff!" |

Not really upset with the Redskins, but at the situation. The Redskins are really making the right move here. They're switching to a 3-4, which from what I understand (i really have no clue how to evaluate) doesnt really match Rocky's strongest skills. However, they cant just let this guy walk either... so I have no problem with The Skins' move here...but I certainly understand why Rocky would be upset. I mean if he blows out a knee or something, he really just lost out on a few million dollars. While Rocky McIntosh still makes a ton of money, he really hasn't had a real good NFL payday... so I understand his side of it completley. |

I think a lot of players are being screwed by this situation. |
re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
I think situations like Rocky's can be bad for team chemistry. Rocky, who has contributed loyally for several years, really does not see much fruit for his labors. But (presumably) Dansby, who has never contributed anything to the Skins, walks in on day one making three times as much or whatever. As a team we have a history of not always rewarding loyal service.
I think we would be a better team if we rewarded from within more and rewarded outsiders less. Maybe Shanahallen will fix this situation over the long term. For this year, however, we will have such a turnover that such situations are unavoidable. |

Yes, that is true. But it seems to me that good teams like the Colts try to minimize such dynamics, where other teams do not. |

How are the Colts doing this? |
re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
Is it not true that the Colts (for just one example) try to build from within? It seems to me that the Colts rarely make big free agent splashes. They draft folks, develop them, and then at least try to pay them for services rendered over time. To be fair, they don't pay everyone and a number of Colts have walked to other teams. But, in general, rather than shopping outside of the organization for free agents, they try to draft people, develop them, and then give them market-value second contracts whenever possible. Such a dynamic rewards player loyalty with organizational loyalty. Is this not true?

Yes, but you made it sound like the Colts were doing something different now with these new rules due to the upcoming uncapped year. Right now throughout the league a lot of players are getting screwed by these rules that come into effect because of the uncapped year, and I don't think many teams have renegotiated deals, instead they are tendering their players. |

The Colts also have two things that most teams do not have, a good if not very good line and arguably the best Quarterback ever. |

Yes, but this has nothing to do with what is going on right now with players getting tendered because of the new rules due to the upcoming uncapped season. Antoine Bethea just got tendered by the Colts. Speaking of tenders, the Dolphins just gave Ronnie Brown a first round tender: Sources: Miami Dolphins tender running back Ronnie Brown - ESPN |

I'm sorry, it is my bad if I made it sound like the Colts were doing something different with the new rules. I was talking about general organizational philosophies. Sorry. |

I tell ya, Schefter is the guy on tweeter in regards to tenders:
Adam_Schefter Redskins put originial comp. low tender on CB Carlos Rogers -- $1.542 million. Any team that signs him must give Redskins a 1. Won't happen
|

and ...
Adam_Schefter Redskins will not tender late-season standout RB Quinton Ganther, so he's free agent.
|

I'm surprised by Ronnie Brown, I figured he'd get a 1st and 3rd tender. I guess there are questions about his durability?

re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
The draft is too deep to actually make this move, but Leon Washington is incredibly enticing at the cost of a second rounder.

I was commenting on how the Colts can get away with the approach of building from within. They are above average in talent evaluation so when they draft someone, they can typically count on them to fit. And when you can pencil in 28 points a game, you can be more patient in other areas. |

That depends for which teams, I suppose; it would be better for us to use the 2nd pick on any O-line position, instead of giving up for a RB which we already have something similar with Alridge.. I know he isn't proven and all, but Shanahan really likes this guy - he was the one who recommend Alridge to Vinny.. Or at least, we can try to sign Sproles if we want something else than Alridge.. But as for for other teams, I could see Bengals or Broncos (a better version of Kevin Faulk?), or maybe even Chargers pulling the trade.. |
re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread
I really like what the Redskins have done today. If the players are complaining, then you did the right thing for the team.
If we get any of the corresponding draft picks for each player, I would not be unhappy at all. If we got a second for Heyer, I would pound a six pack and hit on 20 year olds because it must be my lucky day. |
