Re: The Workplace
At my old job some lady was really annoying, she didn't bother me, but she had burned a lot of bridges through out the office. Someone on a hot day poured a few cans worth of tuna fish water into her car through her cracked windows.
Really though if you are going to those lenghts to piss someone off you are the loser. Sometimes you just got to take the high road and ignore them as hard as that maybe. |
Re: The Workplace
Don't fck around with people at work...you may get fired at best or charged with assault at worst.
Were you proactive and added in the poles before she starts, FD?
Not yet. You do know the part about the stripper poles was a joke and came from this thread. After today I figured out she has a wondering eye and the funny thing today she was talking to our only customer that I know of that has the same problem. Its wierd because one eys looks the other way and its hard to talk to them. The girl I hired yesterday is only training here at the office today and will work from home after that. Re: The Workplace
So the work from home deal I was supposed to start last year is finally rolling out for real at the end of April. I'm on the initial list to try it out, 4 days at home 1 in the office... I'm excited but also a little apprehensive. Anyone have experience working from home? Advantages/disadvantages?

The typical. A lot more freedom but you've gotta be motivated to actually work. |
Re: The Workplace
Wow. 4 from home 1 from work? Personally I'd love that schedule to be swapped. Maybe I'm strange, but I like going into the office. I'm typically more productive and I like to see people during the day.

Re: The Workplace
I'm looking forward to having no commute, I have a 30-40 minute ride each way. Not seeing people won't bother me too much, and there's always the phone. My job is 90% based on phone/email as it is, no reason why it can't be done at home. For me I think it will work out well, less distractions and annoyances.
|
Re: The Workplace
Working from home could present MORE distractions. When in the office, you're (hopefully) in a work mode. When at home, it might be tougher to tell yourself "now I have to work hard for x hours.
Good luck, hope it works out well for you. My wife did database work remotely from home for a few years after she had the baby, worked great for us not having to get a babysitter/daycare so she could stay home. |
Re: The Workplace
Yeah I can see that, but the office is chuck full of distractions too. I think it will just be a matter of getting used to a new routine and different kinds of distractions.

See that would work for me if I was driven by answering phones and emails, like jobs I have had in the past. My current job is building cost estimates for the Army, each one takes months at a time to do and I rarely get a call or email so basically I am self motivated which means if I worked at home it would be me playing Halo for three weeks then scrambling to finish a model in a week. |

What was he doing there? You talk to him?
I'm in retail mgmt, he was shopping. Yeah I talked to him. I just basically said I hope that they get things worked out and to keep up the hard work. He said thanks, seemed pretty genuine and appreciative, probably doesn't get recognized a lot. I didn't really say "HEY YOU'RE BYRON WESTBROOK RIGHT?" or anything. I asked how his brother was doing he said he's been doing well. Didn't really wanna bother him past that. |

Should've tried to line up an interview whoops, j/k

Re: The Workplace
Love this thread! Sounds like the large majority of us are office workers. I work in I.T. for a mental health/substance abuse agency in southern VA. Most of the time, us I.T. people get labeled as the nerds with no personality, but I am actually the one who has the best personality in the whole department. That doesn't help much, because all of our employees come to me when they have computer issues. They are afraid to go to anybody else.
My biggest pet peeve at work is when someone will call me and will say that they are having issues with their computer and will ask me to come and look at it. They won't give me any specifics. When I try to ask them what is going on, they act like they don't know how to explain it. Nine times out of ten, it is usually an extremely simple fix such as rebooting the computer, but they insist on me getting up from my desk to walk to their office just to find out it was really nothing....something I could have fixed over the phone. Another pet peeve of mine is when someone calls me asking about a computer issue and I tell them I'll look at it after a meeting that I am currently heading to, and when I walk past their office, they're yelling at me to come in and help them with their computer issues...even though just a minute ago I told them over the phone that I was heading to a meeting and that I would check on it after the meeting. And finally, another pet peeve of mine. My workplace froze all the raises, unless you're one of the favorites. I haven't had a raise in nearly six years, yet they can afford to install brand new carpet that looks exactly the same as the existing carpet and not any better than what was on the floor. That cost the company over $100,000, yet they can't give me a 3% raise..... |

My experience is that you have to set firm boundaries. On one hand, people begin to think of your home as your workplace only and will bother you at odd times (work-related calls at 6 AM, 10 PM, Sundays, etc. at home). On the other hand, some non-work folks may not get that your home is your work place, and feel like they can drop by any time and hang out because you are home. Then it becomes hard to be productive. |

Well, file me under "I cant complain about my boss".
I'm a huge Rush fan and he knows it. Yesterday he drops this on my desk and says, dont say I never gave you anything. Its a hardbound edition of all the Rush tour books from 1977 to 2004. He wouldn't say where he got it or what it cost. :woot: |

Like now she gets really bent out of shape if a parent comes in parks in one of our assigned spots to pick up there kid from the school bus. I guess little stuff after time gets to you. Much like Jack when he worked at the Stanley. On the same hand someone throw away a big print job in my personal cube waste basket when I was at the gym. Kind of pissed me off but it really doesn't affect me. Basically no human was placed on this earth to do paperwork so eventually it drives you crazy. |
