Can't sign perfect fits all in one year. This doesn't keep us from improving the position over the next few seasons. |

IMO go get a guy in the later rounds. Find a diamond in the rough. Coach up Moore and get him healthy. That's how I'd address it. Chasing a 30 year old safety when you're not contending for a Super Bowl makes 0 sense.
Sure, if we traded picks to get him, this doesn't make sense. But since all it cost was Synder's money, who cares?? We unloaded a lot of contracts so I think we're looking good for the salary cap. Atogwe is a good move because: 1) Free agent, didn't cost picks. 2) Seems like a good locker-room guy. 3) Good veteran who can help K.Moore/young secondary. 4) Makes our D more competitive & fun to watch. Seeing #21 in the highlights was hard to watch. To think what could have been - at least this year we'll see a glimpse of good safety play again. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
^Agreed definitely should've pulled the trigger on this last yr, but he's durable, knows the system, and is a playmaker. He was the best available cover FS, which we haven't had since ST died. This at least shores up a weakness for 3-4 yrs.
Can't understand why some are saying we should have done this last year. The Rams clearly overpaid for Atogwe and the proof is in the pudding, don't you think? I think we did the right thing by not getting involved in a balloon bidding contract. Remember, we were trying to maintain a collective frugality campaign unlike the previous tag team of Snyder and Vinnie. Atogwe is here and he comes with a reasonable contract. I don't think he will play out the 5 year contract but who cares, we have a respectable FS. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
What's the difference of getting him in '10 or now? He's a skin and we didnt give up anything for him. Im glad we waited

I don't think anyone or the FO is suggesting that Atogwe is a long term solution. We need a stop-gap solution and the best FS out there is Atogwe. Sanders is too injury prone. Finding a gem in the rough is not going to happen; Moore, Horton and Doughty did not provide enough to resolve our dilemma at FS or SS. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I like it. But I still think we should go back to a 4-3. How do we go from top ten to almost last in a matter of one year with the same personel? And he definatley cant wear #21. Are we retiring that #?

I don't think they should go back to the 4-3. Just give it time. They need the right personel. He won't have #21. The redskins don't officially retire numbers but they do unofficially. |

Most fans, including myself weren't sold on Moore as a Starting FS. Obviously this is a mute point, but OJ was on the market 3 days last June before the Rams re-signed him. And had we signed him last offseason don't you think he would've been an upgrade over Moore? That's the point some of us are making. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Thats what I didnt understand about the change. If you dont have the personel then why not make the change gradually as you get it. If albet haynseworthless didnt have that huge contract and a poopy attitude we could trade him for some quality 3-4 type guys.

The coaching staff did not share your view. We would have probably spent too much for him at the time. Moore was given the opportunity to be the starter but he didn't work out, due to a lack of ability or injuries. Of course, you knew that. But the professional football minds were trying to give the "diamond in-the-rough (Moore) a chance to shine. |

In a perfect world, you were right thinking that we should have gotten him earlier. One year later has not deterred his play-making abilities and his studentship of the game. A name from the past comes to mind: Kenny Huston. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Like this signing alot. Takes a need off the board... hope this doesn't mean the end for Los though. With OJ & Landry holding down the safties, Barnes is gonna be concentrating on CB and possibly eliminate the need for Los. I think Los is pretty underrated... if he caught half the balls he touched he would be considered a top 10 calibur corner IMO. i don't know where we'd find a corner to come in and play better than him.

I think it may be a precautionary step toward preparing for Los' departure. I would guess then that Buchanan stays. But I have no idea. Maybe one day their prince will come. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Los is taking a big chance IMO by not re-signing sooner rather than waiting for the CBA deal to play out. I know it only takes one suitor, but I would guess that if there's a work stoppage, once it's over FA salaries will not be as high, and the no. of FAs out there would flood the market too.
Don't know what the Skins have offered & maybe they really are trying to sign him to a bargain deal for them. If what they're offerring is even avg., I think I would take the bird in hand if I were him. |

Prince not gonna be there at 10, Id be disappointed if we spend another top ten draft pick on the secondary. |

It wouldn't be my top choice, and like I've said in the past I doubt Dallas passes on him if he's there at 9. I was just throwing it out there |

Like the signing = 93 Don't like = Kareem Moore and Reed Doughty |

There are so many holes in the dyke. This just fills one. Good signing. Wish we had more draft picks.

He's 29...will be 34 when his contract expires. KOW the guy has been remarkably durable, barring injury he should be able to play at a reasonably high level through the life of his contract. |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
So he's not a long term player, big deal. He makes us a better D right now and fills a need.
When we signed Fletcher he was already 31, does anyone regret making that move now?? |
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I know that signing a older player while we are not in contention take the spot away from a younger player that could be valuable a few years down the road when hopefully we are in contention, but I think you have to stay relevant while rebuilding youre team otherwise good players wont want to come here, and if they do it will be solely for the money.
We didn’t give up any draft picks, we didn’t over pay, this is a great signing. It probably spells farewell to Macho Harris, but we were probably likely to bring in a lower quality vet anyways. |

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
The redskins will get shit for signing any player folks, the Atogwe deal was a smart move who cares what ppl say
|
Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
Supposedly the rams gave up on him because they didn't view him as a sideline to sideline defender. Hmm...

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I've never really understood what's sideline to sideline defender is susposed to mean? Is it solely a physical thing?

It's like a Sean Taylor honestly, a guy who can cover the whole field. That's what I understand anyway. LL is pretty damn good also at being all over the field. |

Breaking down Atogwe's Redskins contract
There are no smoke and mirrors to the five-year contract signed by former St. Louis Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe with the Washington Redskins. It's a pretty straightforward contract, and is backloaded only slightly. Atogwe gets base salaries of $900,000 in 2011, $3.4 million in 2012 and 2013, $3.6 million in 2014, and $3.7 million in 2015. That adds up to $15 million in base salary. Atogwe also is in line to receive $11 million in roster bonuses and offseason workout bonuses over the life of the contract, raising its overall value to $26 million according to figures filed with the NFL Players Association. Atogwe gets most of that roster bonus money -- $7 million -- this season. Throw in the $900,000 base salary and a $100, 000 offseason workout bonus and Atogwe will make $8 million this season -- which is exactly the amount of the roster bonus the Rams were unwilling to pay in February, leading to Atogwe's release. The contract also calls for Atogwe to receive an additional $1.45 million in Years 2-5 if terms of an escalator clause are met. |

I'm stoked for OJA to be in our 34 scheme

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!
I don't care how old he is...he's a team player, a baller, and he gets turnovers. He has experience and understands the system. Beats the hell out of the kind of deals we used to make...(Jason Taylor). That still makes me sick. :vomit:
