Re: What did you do at work today?
It does take some discipline, but I find there are just as many, if not more, distractions and time wasters in the office. At home it's easier to get in a groove and I'm definitely more productive.

Today at work I'm getting donkey punched in the nads repetitively.
People want me to make bricks without straw. And the ironic thing is that the biggest dick I work with is being nice to me. |

Re: What did you do at work today?
i think i mentioned in this thread a while back about meeting bobby mitchell, i'm working on his house. i rarely see him or his wife very much but today they came in for a meeting at the office. when the meeting was wrapping up his wife had to go get something from the car. the second she got up from the table me, my boss and bobby started talking redskins football, went on for about 20 minutes. best day at work i've had in a loooong time, mr.mitchell is a really cool guy.

Re: What did you do at work today?
Has anyone worked 8 straight days of 8 hours or more? Just curious.
Has anyone worked 8 straight days of 8 hours or more? Just curious.
I sort of had to do that about two months ago. I had my normal five day work week, followed by refereeing two wrestling tournaments (about 9 hours each) on Saturday & Sunday, then another work week which included a 10 hour-long meeting on one of the days. I was freaking exhausted when it was all done.

When I was a bank teller in college one summer we were really short handed, I think I went 3 weeks straight working 10 hr days, 6 days/wk. Made some killer OT but it really sucked. |

LOL! That is a vacation when I use to work in hotel operations! I easily had 85+ hour work weeks, sometimes you just sleep at the hotel then start your shift over when you got up. God those were some awful days, just awful. |

Yep. Retail holiday season. Both at Target and Toys-R-Us. Nothing crazy ala mredskins but I did make some bank on OT. |

the worst part about my job was I was just out of school so I had a entry level management position with Marriott; Front Desk Manager. I beleive I made $28k a year on salary which meant no OT! Fawk that sucked! If I worked 85 hours one week I made $6.33 a hour! You have to pay your dues in that business I have a few friends that have stuck with it and are in upper management now and they do pretty well but even at their level if you are a manager at Marriott you must work a minimum of 50 hours a week. Even when I got out of operations and was in finance for them I still had to work 50 hours a week at minimum. There were weeks when I was that busy and the time was filled or went over but there were other times when I was done with my work for the day at say 4:30 and I still had to sit at my desk until 6 doing not a fawking thing. It was so lame. |

Record is 23 straight days of full-time on 3rd-shift while attending college full-time for 8 hours during the day. Then I got a single night off and did another 16-20 in a row. I'd get one night off a month, maybe a couple of lucky times I got two. I was the only person they had in that position, night auditor at a hotel. Averaged 10 hours of sleep a week during college...completely serious. Anyone beating that? |

lol ... yup. I have several such streaks. |
Re: What did you do at work today?
I have had some week long trials where I lived on coffee and sugar. And it's not the trial, it's the week or so before where you have to prep witnesses. Most of the regular day is spent meeting with witnesses, getting the Admins set up with work and then the evenings are spent getting things ready for the next day's prep, drafting motions, etc. etc.
The hardest thing is trying to stay mentally sharp the all the way through the trial. Usually, about half way in, things start humming and, when bad sh** happens, it's pretty much you either did it, prepped for it or you just gotta let it slide. Generally, I just smile and nod as if it's exactly what I meant to have happen. I imagine their are very few "always/always" 9-5 jobs out there and, for people who aren't afraid to work, there's more than enough to do. You just do what you gotta do. |
Re: What did you do at work today?
Guess I'm sorta lucky, 37.5 hrs/wk, no more no less.
|
Re: What did you do at work today?
Alright well I guess I have my answer then. Not completely common but it does happen. I was just asking because I'm starting a new job on Monday and had it not been for the Easter holiday I would have worked 8 straight 8 hour shifts.
It's crazy though. For the last 9 months I haven't gotten any calls about potential jobs. Heck I knew the VP of my current company and couldn't even get the VP of HR whom he referred me to to call me back. The last week and a half I've gotten 3 unsolicited calls one of which led to the job I'll be starting Monday at a mid sized logistics firm. Apparently leaving your resume posted and view-able to recruiters on those job sites is a good thing so long as it's well written. Now my friends, many of whom already have jobs, are asking me if I can get them a job. To which I tell them I'll try but based on my recent experience the economy is about to turn the corner.
Even when I got out of operations and was in finance for them I still had to work 50 hours a week at minimum. If you finish your work you should be rewarded not forced to stay late to keep up appearances because lazy Bob who makes it look like he's working hard is really spending most of the day procrastinating. The only exception is customer service and sales positions where you're kind of reliant on the customers schedule. |

I am not saying you but some of the strangest people i have meet in my 38 years have worked that shift.
Guilty most likely. :D Actually, except for not being able to sleep, it was the perfect job for a college student. I'd have PLENTY of time to do all of my studying, school work and papers at work. Only the beginning and end of the shifts were busy and had work. The auditing part took me an hour, then there were just a few checkins at the beginning and checkouts at the end. In between, there was dead time, everyone was asleep. Plenty of crazy people and incidents to keep it fun too and I started drinking coffee at that job. Unlimited coffee. All night. |

Re: What did you do at work today?
I remember someone in here (I think it was Dirtbag) mentioning how many consecutive days they've worked, so I felt like sharing. I'm entering a stretch run where I'm going to be working 19 straight days between 2 jobs. Basically looks like this:
I worked 6 days last week (including my birthday last Wednesday :/), Mon-Fri as the stock clerk at a Nissan dealership, and then on Sat. at my 2nd job doing beer & wine samples. Now I have to work Mon-Fri this week, plus Sat & Sun, then next Mon-Fri, and the Sat & Sun after that, then the next Mon-Fri again before I get my next day off. I know I can do the work, but it's gonna be exhausting. Ordinarily I'd get Wed. July 4th off for my first job, but I'm working that day for my 2nd job lol. The only hard part about my second job is standing in the same spot on a concrete floor for 4 hours in my dress shoes, I mean handing out samples is easy work but it takes a toll on my feet, especially moreso because I'm on my feet a lot at my first job. At least on the bright side, I'll be making a little bank. |

I told him I would only check four. He was unhappy. I talked to my boss and he said four was fine. Eat it, Chuck! |
Re: What did you do at work today?
Put in my 2 weeks at the dog kennel and I'm going back to grooming dogs. Starting as a bather then HOPEFULLY working my way to a groomer, ideally by the end of the year. Even though I'll have 2 degrees, in this economy it can't hurt to have a trade. I know the groomer at the kennel I'm working at made damn near $70,000 on tips and commission and at the store I used to work at the groomer used to tell me if he pushed himself (booked himself daily) he could make almost $1000 in a week.
Sounds pretty alright to me. |
