This never ceases to make me roll my eyes:
Bangladesh workers find survivor in factory rubble DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- A seamstress buried in the wreckage of a collapsed garment factory building for 17 days was rescued Friday, a miraculous moment set against a scene of unimaginable horror, where the death toll shot past 1,000. Reshma survived, in remarkably good shape, by eating dried food that was in her area and drinking spare amounts of water with her. She was discovered on the second floor of the eight-story Rana Plaza building, where crews have been focused on recovering bodies, not rescuing survivors, for much of the past two weeks. And the most hilarious part? Hundreds of people who had been engaged in the grim job of removing decomposing bodies from the site raised their hands together in prayer for her survival. "Allah, you are the greatest, you can do anything. Please allow us all to rescue the survivor just found," said a man on a loudspeaker leading the supplicants. "We seek apology for our sins. Please pardon us, pardon the person found alive." Mother****er, you need to be thanking the volunteers pulling the rubble aside! Anyone else find it laughable that a deity gets all the props and very little condemnation for allowing shoddy workplace safety? Religious types, not too bright. |

Rat and Alvin: Your hatred of people, regardless of race or religion, who condone abuse of women in all its forms (domestic violence, rape, mutilation, etc.) is morally justified. I'm 100% with you on that. But judging a billion people in the middle east (the majority of whom are muslims) based on the actions/attitudes of a small minority is cookie cutter racism. You want to say you dont prejudge people of the middle east and only muslims, then you are a "religious discriminator." Its no different than racism and just as ugly. Islam doesnt teach that its ok to rape and beat women or perform FGM... thats just a small portion of people who happen to live in those countries and claim to be muslim. Judging the majority of people in those countries based on those few is overt discrimination. How would you feel if someone beleived you were a "god hates fags" soldier funeral protester just because you lived in the US? Discrimination is ugly in all its forms. Not sure why they are still considered men. Laws don't stop people, you need societal pressure. Until women are treated as equal this will continue. Same with the rape travesty. |

And it doesn't help when religion supports and advocates for ugly practices:
'Circumcision controls women's sex common sense' - Sheikh Yussef al-Badri Female genital mutilation was made illegal in Egypt in 2008 but is still very widely practiced. Some estimates suggest over 75% of women, Muslim and Christian, still have had the procedure in some areas of the country. Debate on the subject has re-opened after the recent death of a 13-year-old girl while having the operation. Studies have also documented cases of serious health and psychological complications. Sheikh Yussef al-Badri is one of Egypt's biggest advocates for what he refers to as female circumcision, and has petitioned the country's courts to make it legal again. He told Aleem Maqbool that it removed a woman's "need for man". Apparently men can't be trusted to control themselves. |

Re: All things Middle East related
Now Morsi is equally unliked, but removing him power could be seen a major step backwards for the revolution. After all, Morsi — as he is quick to point out — was democratically elected. If he can be forced out by violent protests or military order, then what kind of democracy does Egypt really have? The people want him gone, but are they willing to do so at the cost of giving power back to a military that can order a president around? The world now waits for his answer.

This includes an Israeli professor who has lived through the terror of terrorist attacks and a Palestinian professor whose house was attacked by anti-tank missiles by the IDF. They are actually both friends and co-taught a class at my university regarding this conflict. I learned a lot though this class, including that there are a lot of people on both sides that wish to have peace. I have also learned how biased US media is on this conflict, and how radical people are in this country. It is amazing how people can developed such sentiments without living under the conditions that both Israelis and Palestinians live, and this makes me pessimistic about this conflict ever having a peaceful ending. |

Breaking News @BreakingNews 9m Communication with Egypt's President Morsi has been cut off as reported military coup continues - @NBCNews Yep. One of the things about the US, which I always am amazed at, is the total commitment by the military to the ideal of civilian control. As large as the bureacracy of the military is, the top brass don't just offer lip service to that, they truly buy into it. It is one of the few trusts in US society which I feel hasn't ever been broken, and one which very few other societies really comprehend. The Egyptian military may very well be acting on behalf of alot of the public, but, it's still acting outside of democratic principles. I don't think they get the difference. And that's a shame. |
Re: All things Middle East related
Making the Egyptian scene murkier is the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood wrote the constitution and made it Brotherhood- rather than democracy-friendly. So, from the standpoint of many non-Brotherhood Egyptians, Egypt hasn't yet had democracy, as it was usurped by Morsi et.al. Throwing out Morsi with the army, from this point of view, is pro-democracy, not anti-democracy.
I'm not making an argument of my own, just mentioning the muddy waters. |

Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for the Islamic world. Islamist politics have their attraction to many Muslims, just as we have people here attracted to pro-Christian politics. But the economic and social history of Islamists in positions of power has been poor in recent decades. Muslim politicians with Islamist agendas typically don't know how to run a thriving economy and this was true for Morsi in Egypt. Egypt's problems could, by reaction, expand the numbers of political secularists across the Muslim world, where you vote for the guy with money sense rather than for the guy thumping his Qur'an. |
