Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Yes 27. Yes four years. But basically a rookie as far as playing time. If he truly had 4 years under his belt and was still making these mistakes the experiment would be over - imo these things can still be chalked up as rookie mistakes. Not to mention he has 7 starts total where he has been taking first team reps , etc. I like the improvements im seeing at this stage of his career (in dog years).
Unique situation for Kirk because he sat behind someone who the franchise had huge expectations for. Looking at the numbers, Kirk has played the OVERALL toughest defenses in the NFL combined between all 31 NFL teams according to pro insider. He's down from 4.5 INT/Throw to 3.0. League average is a bit below that. We have a QB right now that is playing in a real WCO and project numbers... 4100 yards, 23 TD 18INT %68 completion rate. Compare that to other young QB playing their first season. There is no way you don't offer the guy a McCown or Fitz type deal and build around the team more. |
Was listening to Cooley's film breakdown yesterday. There wwere a couple of throws that cousins made that I thought were terrible throws that Cooley said he thought the same thing till he watched the film. There was one to Crowder where he had to reach back and looked like he almost broke his leg reaching back for it.I thought that was a bad throw but Cooley said in his film breakdown that was a great throw, that it was placed where it needed to be and it kept Crowder from being laid out by the defender.Who knows? I know Cooley has a lot more football x's and o's knowledge then I do
He did. He took the harder big boy throw between the zone of 4 defenders a fit it in for a first down. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
What do we make of the pretty strong under-current of Twitter football "experts" who spend their time pointing out for example how Cousins played pretty typically average last Sunday?
The types who seemingly have some clue about football and who watch the all-22s and show how a good play could have been better with a better throw and so forth? They seem to want to continue the narrative that Cousins isn't very good, and they may be right, but at the same time I can't help but think if we all-22'd Aaron Rodgers we could do the same thing...nit pick even good plays and how they could ave been better. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Cousins is getting better all the time. He's cutting down on the crucial mistakes. We know he can lead a late comeback to win a game. He's proven that - which is a very big deal, IMO.
I wouldn't try to rank him at this point but I will say that I believe he hasn't nearly reached his full potential. As he gains more game experience and continues to progress, I think that most of us will begin to regard him as much more valuable than we consider him to be at the present time. He got a key weapon back (Reed) against TB and he used that weapon well. I'm eager to see what he's able to do with with a full complement of receivers: DJax, Reed, Garcon, etc. It could be very exciting.
This. There are alot of smart people in the NFL that are high on kirk. I would imagine they know alot more about his potential than some guys on this board. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I'm kind of expecting a loss, and all I ask is that they don't take the Pats to the last minute and break our hearts. I've had enough stress from this damn team all season, for better or worse. :)
If you're going to get blown out, get blown out. If you're going to win, make sure we know for damn sure before the last 3-4 minutes. My heart can't handle any more comebacks, Skins or otherwise. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I want at least two or three games of consistent good play - meaning: 1) No bonehead INT's; and 2) consistent accuracy with his passes.
I do too, so I obviously think what you want to see from him is fair. That's why he's not a finished product. Would you say he's getting there if he can produce two or three good games in a row with one or two poor games in between the good ones? |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I need to see consistent play for multiple games AND I also need to see him perform on the road. Something he has yet to do with the exception being the one game in CLE in 2012.

Only the elite QB's are good nearly every time out. To me, it seems that you may be setting the bar too high at this point in his career. Kirk needs to to continue to improve, as does every other player on this team. By the time we get the right players in place to win big, then I think Kirk will be a much better QB than he is now. |

It's hard to be patient. There seems to be only two possible ratings for QB's around here: Great and Sucks. What about Good? Apparently, Good isn't good enough. If a QB is only Good, many Redskins fans think he needs to be replaced. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Everyone knows we are rebuilding, but refuses to accept that rebuilding takes place at qb as well....
Im not the biggest fan of gruden, or mcvay and the way they call plays sometimes.... then sometimes they get into a decent rythym and look ok, kinda like Kyle used to.... its sucks to lose, and look bad, but we're not that good.... period... as for Kirk, the kid has the ability, year 2 in this system, year 1 as the starter, its night over night folks, damn. |

I've been saying this for quite some time. Being consistent hasn't been one of Cousins strong points. He's shown he can micro manage a game and come from behind.... and he has also shown that he had turnover tendacies that won't go away |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
The Redskins are going to have to make some kind of decision on KC before he hits the free agent market.

Please everyone stop comparing him to other QBs especially Manning and Farve. Your argument doesn't hold water. My eyes tell me he has made some strides this year in the mental aspect of his game after he makes mistakes. But what they also tell me is that he has yet to put together back to back good games, he has yet to play a good game on the road and he his good games are in the middle of multiple bad games. BOTTTOM LINE the jury is still well out on him and until consistent play is accomplished I don't feel he is the future. |

You are entitled to your opinion. The good thing is we have a competent GM that will make the call on Kirk Cousins. Luckily no one on this website will have a say. |

My eyes are seeing the exact same thing. Not looking for him to be flawless, just looking for the good games to be about a 2:1 ratio of good games to the bad ones. Consistently. |

And signing him to an extension is risky, given his inconsistency. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Lets look around the league and the upcoming college class of QB......not alot there.
Like someone said, McC isnt gonna press and feel rushed to overpay or overdraft a QB. The only real option is to be patient with Cousins and hope he can develop and at the same time hope someone emerges as a good college QB prospect that McC recognizes as draftable. In the mean time, let McC continue to build the team in other areas. |

Also think SM knows that getting the right qb isn't an easy task, and imagine a competent GM (ie SM) would be looking at plans and options in order to find a few good options. I think one of those would be resigning KC to a mid tier contract something like Matt Flynn's in Seattle, and bringing in a college qb SM and his staff like. |

This is the only option. Unless they can trade for matt stafford or similar QB, they have to bring KC back and possibly draft a young QB. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Although Kirk just had a very good game, he hasn't been that consistent in his passing and decision making this season. His inconsistent play has cost the Redskins games this season (not going to discuss his dismal play last year).
My sense is that he will continue to improve some during this season but that he is not the long-term franchise QB that the Redskins have been searching for over the last two decades. If he does improve some and cuts down on his INT then that saves the Redskins from having to pay a king's ransom for a top-tier college draft pick (like with RG3). I still think that our GM McC will be looking at the QB class in this coming years draft. But an improved Cousins will make the team less desperate for an immediate fix at QB. I'm not a KC h8er but don't think he's the long term answer for this team at QB. I'd love to be wrong about that. |

You mean the pick that Grant fell down? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I think he means the pick that Cousins either (1) failed to recognize the blitz; (2) failed to alter the protection after recognizing the blitz; or (3) lofted a blind pass into the flat that, even had the receiver not fallen down, still gave the defender a better play on the ball than the receiver.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
what would serve some of you is Cousins plays great from here out and he signs with another team and goes on to be a great NFL QB while we continue to look for that guy..could happen .in fact i would laugh about it if he went to Dallas and beat us every year..be careful what you wish for cousins may not be here next year..just saying.
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I would love for Cousins to play great from here on out. Truly. If he does, given our cap room next year, we will resign him.
I will bet you real money, however, he does not play great. Instead, I fully expect that he will play consistent with what he has done in the past four years- couple good games, couple bad games, TD's and INT's at about the same rate. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I think Kirk has earned the year no matter what, through his clutch play to win 2 games in the last minute, and come back to force OT in a 3rd (loss), plus one more win.
He has had a few stinkers too, NYJ, NYG at his present pace Kirk is on track for: 418/610 att comp , 68% 3969 yards 20.52 td's 17.9 int's While not all world, it is still pretty good for a first year full time starter.. you have to think he will improve on those #s going forward, as he gets more versed in the offense and the speed of the game and recognizing defensive looks. I see some positives in Kirk, and hope that we may just have found our guy for the future. He may never throw for 5k+ yards and 40+ td's like Rogers, but that guy is a once in a lifetime talent, so he's kind of an outlier. I would be happy with a starting qb who averages 4500, 25-30 td's and 10-15 int's a year, and I think Kirk could be that guy in the future. |
