1917 -- really good movie to see in the theaters. Visuals, sound and the cinematography are great.
It feels like the whole movie was just one continuos shot which is weird and cool. 8.5/10 |

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Just watched London Has Fallen on demand this weekend. Pretty damn good straight action movie. Some good dry humor lines too.

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Star Wars - its alright, i havent really followed the new movies. I watched them.... once .... pretty much didnt know the plot lines but its Star Wars and i was an 80s kid so Im obligated.
Before Star Wars I saw a trailer for a Christopher Nolan movie called Tenet ... looks bad ass. So i just googled the release date ... July 17 2020. WTF is that about. Seems about 4 months to early to be promoting ... anyway, disappointed its so far back. edit -- looked into Tenet some more, jesus the budget was 205 Million dollars. Good lord. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdOM0x0XDMo ^^ trailer |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Lady Bird -- fuck that movie sucked. Shallow, paint by numbers movie about a high school senior coming of age bit ... which was billed as some great refreshing introspection piece.

Anybody seen Doctor Sleep? I've seen mostly good reviews, just don't know anyone who has seen it yet.

Ive been waiting for this to hit Netflix and so I just googled it. Coming out on dvd on Feb 4. Learned some bad bit of news I didnt know before. Don’t hold out hope for Doctor Sleep to land on Netflix any time soon. That’s because the film is a Warner Bros. picture and Warner Bros. has their own streaming service coming out soon: HBO Max. That’s why Warner Bros. movies don’t tend to stream on Netflix, and it means that it’s possible Doctor Sleep will end up available to stream on HBO Max (if it pops up anywhere). https://decider.com/2020/01/21/doctor-sleep-on-vod-blu-ray-netflix-hbo/ The streaming game is getting complex. WB not going to do Netflix, that sucks. |

I would love to think that it'll start to cut into the prices of the cable/satellite services...but it probably won't. |

I thought it was slow, dragged on, and while it took place on the battle field it lacked actual battle field action. Maybe I was expecting more of a Private Ryan type war movie. After asking around we did take our 13 year old as she is very interested in war history. She also thought the same as me. She did learn the "F" word though. LOL |

I thought it was pretty good...the continuous shot was awesome. WWI has been under filmed...it was very interesting. I thought most the Oscar movies were overrated this year, but Ford vs Ferrari and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were the best. Joker, Irishman good, not great. I recently saw Harriet and I thought that was really outstanding. Cynthia Erivo...first off, fine as f*ck....is probably my favorite actor as of recent. Harriet she was outstanding...She stole the movie Bad Times at the El Royale....And she is doing the same now in HBO The Outsider. The Outsider is a great series, folks need to tune into this one. |

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Troop Zero - amazon movie, I really liked it. Feel good movie with a quirky feel to it. Good movie to watch w your lady. Had a rushmore vibe to it but the main character is like 10 and country poor. 8/10
viola Davis, Jim gaffigan, mike epps and some more familiar names Green Book - it was good (im a big Farrellys fan) but no where near what I would consider a best picture winner. It was very predictable in story arc, the acting was equally great but at the same time everyone "over acted" in it. The main characters stuck to traditional cliches of themselves. The reveals werent revealing, they were predictable It was well done I guess, but seemed a paint by numbers type .. 8.5/10 edit - Weinstein guilty of 1st degree sexual act (min 5 yrs) and 3rd degree rape. To many accusers for the pattern and practice to not be true imo. Im amazed at how many movies I watch are weinstein's .. It's hard for me to reconcile some of my favorite all-time movies were produced by the Weinsteins. It's like rooting for some POS wearing a Redskin uniform, I try to separate the talent from the person. |

Yeah when I see that Weinstein pop up I do feel guilty for a second but i tell myself he was just financing movies and hes not making any new ones. |

I thought 1917 was amazing
Just saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a little long but overall it was pretty good |

I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood about a month ago too, another quality Tarantino flick. Brad Pitt and Leo do a great job of making you forget who they actually are. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Saw Knives Out; good movie.

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
JoJo Rabbit - 8.5/10 .. really interesting and unique. Comedy/writing was subtle and great. Highly recommend. Its quirky so be ready for quirky

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Adam Sandler should have been nominated and won for best Actor for Uncut Gems
Uncut Gems was much better than Parasite. the awards are either anti-Semitic or just trash...its one or the other at this point. Id lean towards trash |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Saw 1917 last week. Great movie, def. worth the admission price. Uncut Gems def. still on my to-do list.

Its a must watch. I'm really lost on what defines a great movie...Originality and the actual filmmaking piece of movie making seems to have taken a back seat. I think its unfair to put this all on the Comic book take over but there is also push for brand and franchise in the business. The industry wants to push the easy button. These actors that have sold out to the comic books, they have lost all credibility...they aren't great, these actors never were. Now the Joker I wouldn't put in same book as an FYI, anybody with a brain should be able to draw distinction to what im talking about. Uncut Gems, 1917, Once Upon a Time (even tho the base story is well known)....this is moving making. Parasite movie...the story and the acting seemed disingenuous. Overly trying to make a point made many many times in movies over and over again. That's not originality. Poor acting as well. Adam Sandler...blew it away. Kevin Garnett...awesome. Supporting cast great and the cinematography outstanding. Hollywood is trash...they don't know their product. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I got agree i am done with the Comic Book shit, enough already.
|
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I could never get into the comic book movies or the fast and the furious types or the new star wars, but the way I see it ..... theres movie genres for everyone to enjoy. Everyone has their own unique itch and thankfully, theres a movie that can scratch it for you.
But I do love Guardians of the galaxy v. 1 .. that is a classic movie that i will watch over and over. Invisible Man - I knew I was going to see a predictable movie with predictable scenes and predictable conflict/resolution arc .... but the reviews said it was a refreshing take and had really good rotten tomato scores ... but I thought it overall feel somewhat flat, not bad ... but not good. It was decent. 7/10 ... save your money and watch it on the couch with your lady. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread

"Her", Spike Jonze film (of local Whitman High School fame)
Loved Joaquin Phoenix' acting. His tiniest of facial expressions, his sense of nervousness conveyed through no words ... the guy is brilliant. Liked the mood, directng, feel, soundtrack, cinematography Hated the last half of the movie as it develed into repeating this same preachy mantra on what is love, what is feelings, what is real. We as the viewer picked up on the theme right away ... but we never explored deeply, instead it was surface level cliche monologues being repeated over and over. 7/10 |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Invention of lying -- it was fine for a mid afternoon watch during a stay at home coronavirus day. lots of a list actors, wow.
loved the premise, loved the beginning part which had a lot of uniqueness to it as you were introduced to the movies world parameters (no one lies, everyone speaks bluntly) ... but by the middle and certainly the last 30 mins or so .. the uniqueness and cute quirkyness had run out and it fizzled hard. 6/10 apologies for me rating movies, makes me feel like an egotistical self-gravulating person .. but I love movies and I probably am those things anyway. |

Parker Books . To me an entertaining movie but not very close to the TV show ....yes Hawk is there. Have you seen the Irishman, it's long and slow at times but I liked it |

I rewatched Contagion the other day. I remember it was one of those movies that stuck with me a few days after seeing it. Never imagined we’d be facing this type of situation for real

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Got my Firestick back today, gonna watch like 5 movies. Just watched Brazen with Jason Mamoa. Not great. But a perfectly good kill some time movie.
Bruce Willis is the king or straight to On Demand, Neflix, Amazon movies. He's in tons of them. Starting Reprisal now. The nightcap will be 1917. Excited for that one. |
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Just finished the Doc by Ron Howard on the Beatles Eight Days a Week pretty good ,deals with their live performances .

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
Grown Ups -- they keep replaying it on cable so I finally watched it. It wasnt bad, good light cheesy daytime comedy.
|
Re: Merged: The Movies Thread
I too really liked 1917, really liked the way it was filmed and the look it had to it.
Also watched Doctor Sleep...I liked it. Very different from The Shining, so don't go into it thinking it will match that, because it can't...and doesn't even really try. Barely "horror" in my opinion as well, but well done. |
