hence the whole second tier guys thing. They want to get as much money as possible, and the best way to do that is visit everyone that's interested.
We're talking to some of these guys already. They're the ones that take longer to sign as nobody's saying "hey kid we'll pay you what you want" to them. They'll be fielding offers from quite a few teams.
A lot depends on what some of these players are looking for in a deal. We're going to be in the markat for depth and role players, some of these guys are looking for starting positions which are not going to be avaliable. Can't blame guys for trying to find the right fit for their situation.

At this point I just want Foote, Clark and any of these weak guards and tackles.
I also heard Atogwe from the rams might be available? That would be absolutely amazing if we could get our hands on him.

Right, the one thing Shanny and Allen keep saying is they want to bring in guys for "competition at every position"...not only does it challenge and improve guys but builds depth...even with all the old vets they keep trying to bring in on the Oline, look how the Oline depth has been lately...undrafted free agents or practice squad fodder that never presented a challenge to the guy ahead of them.

Another thing about posters claiming the Skins are doing enough trying to sign guys...look at the free agent situation across the league by no CBA, there isnt a whole lotta guys to chose from. Teams were preparing for this and got their value guys in extentions or placed a tender to protect them. There isnt a ton of guys to pick from and in our situation, no thanks to Vinny, we had an opportunity to cut guys with some bloated salaries and age...we were the oldest team in the league...patience please we are not a playoff team next year

Yep, definitely a lot of things to consider, role being a big part, nice mention.
I guess nothing's saying that we have to keep these guys, who knows.

Could you point to a link sharing the diff zone blocking schemes such as the reid style and shanny's? Or a brief synopsis?
I think Smart Football ran a feature on the different kinds of ZBS schemes a year or two years ago. I'll see if can dig it up.

The biggest difference is the reliance on the cut blocking in the Shanahan scheme to create huge cutback lanes. You don't really see the long cutbacks in other variations of the zone blocking scheme. It's still zone blocking, you're still blocking an area instead of a man, but every play in Shanahan scheme (and Kubiak as well), the backside end is under immense pressure to play the cutback.

Doesn't seem like it would be a major difference for a guard as opposed to the tackle, but I've heard otherwise.

Sounds good, I'll look for it, your description seems to be good enough though.

I'm kind of surprised RB Mike Bell hasn't been mentioned at all.

Wasn't he a Shanahan pick? And he ran kind of well for the Saints this season... I think I'd rather him over a 30-yr old back like Tomilinson, Parker, etc. ... he'd be rather cheap and already know the system.

But again... Shanny must not have been to impressed with him Denver... haven't heard of any interest from the Skins.

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread

Ironically enough, Al Saunders' rushing attack never blocked the backside end either. But that was a different scheme. We weren't looking for the cutback as much as we were just trying to beat the backside end to the point of attack.

And it never worked. But damned if we weren't going to keep trying.

Foote is definitely a guy that I'd like us make an effort to keep him from visiting elsewhere, especially if the FO is thinking that Fletcher won't be around much longer. He definitely has some years left in him, barring injury.

He's young but hasn't done a hell of a lot. Might be worth looking though, he looked probably the best since his rookie year last year. If we don't get Parker he'd be a logical choice to consider.

Pashos's agent says no deal is in place

There were reports Saturday evening the Redskins agreed to terms with both Artis Hicks and Tony Pashos, which still could happen. But as of now, Hicks is the only new offensive lineman headed to Ashburn.

"It's not true. It's not true," Pashos's agent, Rick Smith, said before I could ask a question after contacting him on his cell phone. "He left the building. He's headed to Cleveland right now."

Okay. But is Pashos close to signing with the Redskins? "We're nowhere near close," Smith continued. "Like I said, he's headed to Cleveland."

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread

I think when you look at the Redskins off season on a whole, up to this point, there's no question in my mind that they've positioned themselves better than any team in the NFL. They've restructured their front office in a significant way, which has injected a sense of steadiness and focus into the atmosphere and, probably just as important, trimmed some much need fat from the roster. All of this before draft day, which hopefully will yield a starter or two.

In terms of the non-moves, well, it's easy to look at the coulda, shoulda, woulda's. Every team would love to have a Julius Peppers. But the truth is Peppers isn't going to turn the Chicago Bears into an instant playoff contender, and it's going to take him time to acclimate to a new system. That's true whether it's in Chicago or in D.C. Oh, and Andre Carter ain't too shabby himself. The 'Skins get to keep a steady Carter, who on paper, was just as productive as Julius Peppers last season for a third of the price. It's also worth noting that Andre Carter is only 8 months older than Peppers.

I don't think the Redskins are the team to beat, maybe not even the best team in the NFC East. But I'm fairly certain this team has Wild Card potential. The Cards have unloaded and lost a lot of key players. I doubt if the Vikings will have another run like they did last year. No Chester Taylor, an Adrian Peterson, who struggled down the stretch last season, will also be a year older. As far the NFC East goes, we all know there's usually not much separating the top four teams in the division. It comes down to solid coaching down the stretch and catching some breaks on the injury front.

I'm pretty darn exciting about 2010! Hail!

I agree. We have plenty of time and every year a big name or two gets let go during the offseason.

Btw...IMO...
- Dansby was overpaid.
- Rolle was paid a lot more than we were willing to spend on a safety
- Peppers was definitely overpaid

LOL............coming from the team that signed AH,that's pretty funny.
When you guys can run a short yardage play at him, you can say something. Enjoy your 37 million dollar failure of a corner turned safety.
