Re: Just plain ugly
Rule three , section thirtey
A shift is the action of two or more offensive players who (prior to a snap), After having assumed a set position, simultaneously change the position of thier feet by pivoting to or assuming a new set position with either one foot or both feet. Its all right there.
No it's not...read it again..."change the position of their feet", not move from their set position to another position on the other side of the field. So they are in the same relative area, but went into a 3 point stance, or shifted slightly to the left or something of that nature. It does not say anything about running to a new position. And that seems like it would be a false start to me. |
Re: Just plain ugly
Here is the article that says it all:
Article 5 At the snap, all offensive players must be stationary in their positions: (a) without any movement of feet, head, or arms; (b) without swaying of body; and (c) without moving directly forward except that one player only and he, playing in a backfield position, may be in motion provided he is moving, parallel to, obliquely backward from, or directly backward from the line of scrimmage at snap. It's on page 41 FYI. |
Re: Just plain ugly
There is also this which means the penalty was legit:
Note 2: Non-abrupt movement of head and/or shoulders by offensive players prior to the snap is legal. Players must come to a stop before ball is snapped. If officials judge the action of the offensive players to be abrupt, false start foul is to be called. Penalty: For player illegally in motion at snap: Loss of five yards from previous spot. In case of doubt, this penalty shall be enforced. |
Re: Just plain ugly
i remember peyton manning pulling a sneaky play walking away from the line of scrimmage like he was confused like he was yelling to the sidelines to make the defense think nothing was happening then they snapped it to a back .. he was moving the whole time" so he did not come to a complete stop. this probably has nothing to do with this situation but he was in motion just not moving forward and apparently that was legal. so its just the linemen that cannot move at all once they are set. backs anc receivers can

Re: Just plain ugly
Ironically, the Cowboys just got penalized for "two men moving at the same time"
So maybe it's that multiple players can move before the snap, but they can't have more than one moving at the same time?
Or maybe they saw what happened to us earlier and said , We better call it and if its wrong we can just say thats the way they called in the skins/phins game earlier. just so they are consistant |

Not that this was the reason, but keep in mind Sellers was moving forward. |
Re: Just plain ugly
ack you responded while i was editing hehe oh i mean to say that during this whole time manning had went under center than was in motion the whole time and did not come to a complete stop for 1 sec before the snap, and no flag was thrown

That's a good point...Marino did it one year too...that's interesting. |
Re: Just plain ugly
campbell throws good deep ball
portis looks he is back the defense needs to jell soon |
Re: Just plain ugly
I agree the win was not pretty, but compared to last year I would trade for those 11 loses for 11 "ugly" wins. I hope that we can look better next week, but most of all I'm greatfull for the win, and hope for many more this year.

Re: Just plain ugly
the rule is at NO point can 2 players be in motion, and that is why the penalty was called. mike sellers was moving. and a win is a win is a win. ill take enough of these for the skins to get into the playoffs

Re: Just plain ugly
I must say that it concerns me a bit that it seems that JG lost confidence JC to go out and win the game with his arm. After those 2 Ints. Joe G. appeared to rely on the run to bail us out of trouble. That was more evident towards the end of the game. Mad props towards the O-line for opening up those holes for our running backs. The O-line, along with Suisham get my game ball. Get well soon Jon J.

Re: Just plain ugly
Yes it was no all that pretty but here is a few thing that we need to remember. Our D held them to 13 points and that gave our O the chance to win the game. Even with all the bad pass and dropped balls our O still had a 400 yard game. Our running game looked good against a tough front 7 and Gibbs did a good job of using CP and LB keeping them fresh. Good teams will not always look that good but find a way to win the game which we did.

Actually, Peyton tried that a few years ago, and before he did it, he put his hands under center (ie set) and got a penalty called on him. |
