Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
In the poll two people have voted so far for "other." What is the other? An Okie 5-2? A wide tackle 6? A 46? Just curious.

Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I've been giving this a lot of thought. Although we don't have the players for a 3-4 IMO I think we should do it. Why? Well we don't have a very good 4-3 defense either. If you're going to do it, then do it now. I know a lot of people say that out defense is good but they haven't played good. They're not the Ravens of old. If we do go to a 3-4 I say draft MT Cody. I'm confident that Shanny-Allen will do what it takes to win in the next few years. For now I'm just going to write off next season as a building year. Honestly how many of these guys are worth it?

I like the formation on NCAA the 4-2-5 |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
People say we dont have the personell for a 3-4....Dont forget we have Montgomery at 330 lbs that can play NT with Griffin & Haynesworth backing him up...
DE Jarmon, Golston, Alexander, Haynesworth...all 280 lbs(+) ILB Fletcher, Henson, McIntosh,Blades, OLB Orakpo, Wilson, Carter All we need to add is an additional 3-4 OLB, through the draft
yeah, I thought about it more & you're right, there wouldn't be a wholesale personel change needed. We would need LBs as you point out, but that's a need the team went into the last draft with, and still remains today even if we stay in a 4-3. Fletch has 1 year left IMO & the strong side at least needs depth in order to give Rak more DE snaps. I still hope that we don't go for a 3-4 base, rather Haslett mixes in some 3-4. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Questions for all:
1) If Suh is available, do we take him? I say yes, best player in draft. 2) What impact will that have on 4-3 v. 3-4? (I don't see him as a NT) |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Playing Suh in a 3-4 would be a complete waste IMO. A BAD idea. I don't see him as a NT either Freddy.

Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
If we want to switch to a 3-4, we should really wait until next year to do it. we have too many problems with our offense to worry about completely overhauling our defense in the same offseason. i voted for a 4-3/3-4 hybrid. stick with the 4-3 as our base package this year, but incorporate a fair amount of 3-4 to get some of our players more acclimated to it. Any defensive front 7 players we pick up in free agency or the draft this year should be able to fit in both systems.

I answered "other" for the 46. In a way I was joking, because it's hard to pull-off, but in another way I'd like to see us pull it off. It's a dominant run-stopping defense, which in my eyes, should be the first focus for a defense -- but you've gotta be able to stop the pass as well so you need great and fast DBs. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
How about the 11 defense. 11 sumo wrestlers knock everyone down the second the ball is snapped.

Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I am not sure if it has been mentioned, but G Williams used to run a lot of 3-4 looks on third down and other passing situations.
I could see us using a base 4-3 on running downs and switching to the 3-4 look on obvious passing downs to free up more edge rushing options with Orakpo. Given his conditioning, Haynesworth is only going to play for 2 downs a series anyway, so you can keep him happy and focused on being disruptive in our 4-3 looks. |

Theres only one pure nosetackle in the draft and thats Terrance Cody. It's had to find guys right now in this class that weigh more then 310 pounds on the D-Line. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Cody was built to be a NT....or a sumo wrestler. :)
