He also has one of the worst RZ % over that 4 year span, we are in the bottom 10 over the years in RZ scoring, that won't beat many teams
The Redskins are near the bottom in that time span converting 3rd or 4th and 2 or less, that will lead to issues in the red zone.
Gruden is playing with a deck stacked against him but I feel he is responsible for stacking the deck. During his tenure it is pretty obvious the Redskins are on the wrong end of the injury reports, it is starting to become more than coincidence, something isn't right. What it is I do not know, but it appears to be more than just bad luck.
I absolutely do put a lot of blame on Jay Gruden for a number of things. I don't believe Jay Gruden is benign to criticism at all. And ultimately, if the Redskins were able to bring in a GM who actually has power and is competent enough to use said power, then that guy decides Gruden's fate, and picks the new head coach, who in turn must be able to pick a competent coaching staff. That is task number one for that head coach. If he fails at this, he's going to fail at being a head coach even before you get to X's and O's. I am definitely down with that. All I'm saying is, you can fire Jay Gruden, replace him with Vince Lombardi, and it's going to be the same issues as long as Bruce Allen has the final say in everything.

They are 20 games over 500 in the last 10 years, I'd take that.

He also knows how to build a team, they have a ton of young talent at key positions.
Mid season firings never really work but Gruden should have been fired after the Saints game. The last two games only confirms that he's not HC material. His own players don't even know their assignments, and these aren't guys that are just coming off the street either.

The injuries have hurt but last week was a non competitive team that looked like they didn't want to be there, coming off a long layoff. I've never seen a defense give up 350 yards in a half in an NFL game. Last week's effort was inexcusable, just like the Saints game was.
I can understand wanting him gone after the Chargers game.
But after the Saints game? His team came a few mistakes away from beating one of the best teams in the NFL while being one the (if not THE) most injured teams in the league and you want the HC gone at that time ?

In a 16 game season, that averages out to probably around 9-7 each year. That's pretty much what we already have.

It has taken Jones how long to build said team? And even so, the team might still miss the playoffs this year. Honestly, Jones, no thanks.

We suck on 3rd and 4th downs, we suck in the redzone, and we suck at the end of halfs and games. Those are all very critical to winning games. 4 years is no small sample size. Gruden just isn't getting it done. And on top of it, his answers to questions are mind blowing. Teams reflect the personality of their coach. Gruden literally admitted to quitting during the game. Eff that. No wonder we keep getting smoked. We need a no non-sense hard nosed coach. We've needed that for a long time. I'd rather actually hire a defensive coach to be HC. We keep hiring offensive guys.

The whole O/S

*McVay leaving
* Scot fired
* PG/Djax Leaving
* KC contract
* Cravens AWOL

All have damaged this team and then on top of that you throw in a horrible roster of wr's, injuries mount up, NEW DEFENSE that still sucks..

All of that is hard to get over, and when your HC is already having issues in critical moments of games , non of that helps.

Another stat I saw the other day was the skins are the worst team in the league under 2mins on BOTH sides of the ball.

We give up the most and score the least in 2min situations, that is not acceptable, and yes that is on coaching.

That's a very damning stat and not very surprising. Hard to win games if you're last in that stat. Basically means you have a very low chance of winning close games. So unless you can blowout every team you're screwing yourself.

This is what bugs the shit out of me. It's like when the game is on the line these coaches piss and shit all over themselves like a 2 year old.

Gruden is to blame cause he keeps hiring Joe Barry and now Manusky. Swearinger said they didn't even practice for 2 min hurry up.

Look what McVay did w/ his defense? Goes out and hires the best guy cause he knows that's going to help him win.

Well it seems like the talk now amongst the media / gossipers, etc. say that Jay has to win out to have a good chance at coming back next season.

Me personally i think that he has to go at least 7-9 because of the injuries / various issues.

Although if we go 5-11 and suffer huge blowout losses, then he probably doesn't come back.

The more and more I think about it, I am not sure if firing Jay right now / at the end of the year is the best option. Maybe we give him one more year with a healthy team?

All season long most of you have blasted the guy for his play calling and his inability to fire up the team, and not getting it done in the red zone, but most of you want to keep him? I understand that we want to quit being a coaching carousel, but this guy is half assed at best. He couldn't coach a Division 1A school either. Seriously, which would you rather have Norv Turner or Jay Gruden? Not the greatest choices to have, but at least Norv had no problem getting it into the red zone.

You bring up a good point about our RZ problems. And we are downright brutal on 3rd and short. I am not football savvy enough to know where the cause of the Red Zone problems really lie. IIRC, we were not very good in the Red Zone even when we had a healthy team.

Jay is calling the offensive plays, right? Is it even worth it at this point to consider what it would be like if Jay hands over playcalling duties to someone else? Is that something Jay would consider?

I know it isn't good when the team takes away playcalling from a Coach, but do you think changing play callers would help at all?

This has been the story of this season, starter gets hurt, backup gets hurt, backup of a backup gets hurt. All endup on IR. Only coach I know that can win with replacement players is the other JG.

The Redskins placed tight end Jordan Reed on injured reserve, the team announced today. Reed played just six games this season because of a hamstring injury. He caught 27 passes this season. They also placed RB Byron Marshall and LB Chris Carter on IR. They signed RB Kapri Bibbs, LB Pete Robertson and LB Otha Peters to the active roster

I think Jay and Kirk have done a great job this year in passing offense .... no receivers, battered O line, no run game. Admittedly the wheels are coming off the past few games and the team looks like they are done.

Jay isnt a top 10 head coach but Id put him in the middle of the pack. Top 10 in terms of offensive coaches go.

I feel that Jay Gruden should be someone that coaches a college team. He'd be perfect in the Pac Ten or Big 12 where they pitch it around and play no defense. He can yuck it up w/ boosters and not have the pressures and the demands of an NFL job. He'd be a great recruiter too. If he came into a top QB or wr's living room you're going to go play for him. He would have been a great fit for the Arizona State job, or UCLA or even a place like Texas. IMO that's really where he belongs. He'd be a great college coach.

Re: By Popular Demand. Should the Skins FIRE Jay Gruden? Thread

At this point, I'm in with getting rid of Gruden, but under the condition that the entire thing gets blown up. I mean the entire thing! The front office, the coaching staff, the scouting team - blow it all up! No more Bruce Allen. When the new GM comes in, let him have full control over everything. He picks the head of scouting, he picks the head coach. He allows the head scout to interview to fill the positions he will manage. Same way with the head coach. The head coach's first job will be hiring his staff. The general manager will simply interview the top two candidates and make his recommendations, but the head coach and the head scout have the final say on who gets hired. Meanwhile, Dan Snyder sits in his office writing the checks and working on the new stadium deal - other than initially having to be involved with hiring the new GM. Other than that, Snyder doesn't get within arms length of any decision on player acquisitions or coaching. Contracts are worked out with the GM and maybe assistant GM (as was Charlie Casserly with Bobby Beathard), but nobody else. The new GM and new head coach will work together in deciding which players they plan to retain, and which ones they'll cut loose. But, they're welcome to gut the team if that must happen.

So, in short, this is what I'll accept. If you're going to make a change, make a complete change. Yes, there are quality guys within this organization, but sometimes, you need to just make a complete cut with the old and bring in the new. It would take some brass balls to go this postal, but I think this is the only way to go.

For those that don't want to click on the link.

7. Washington
Daring to take the job in Washington is essentially a show of supreme confidence in yourself. You have to believe that you're going to be the one to overcome what might be the league's most toxic culture and succeed where eight other coaches have failed under owner Daniel Snyder. Coaches have to be confident people by definition, but taking the Washington job might also qualify as literal madness.

And to be clear, this seventh-placed ranking assumes Washington has Kirk Cousins on its roster in 2018, whether by the transition tag, the franchise tag, or a long-term extension. Without Cousins, this would be about as undesirable of a job as possible, given the hole at quarterback and the attrition rate of prior coaches. There's virtually no chance a new coach would have the time to both identify and develop a new franchise quarterback before being fired.

The best-case scenario for Washington is that it signs Cousins to that long-term extension, but even that will eat up $25 million to $30 million or so of the $54 million in cap space it is due to hold this offseason. Several other starters are free agents, most notably inside linebacker Zach Brown and cornerback Bashaud Breeland. Washington might choose to re-sign Breeland and move on from free-agent addition Josh Norman after two frustrating seasons in D.C. Designating Norman as a post-June 1 release would free up $14 million in cap space but simultaneously create another opening on the defense.

There's unquestioned talent on this roster, but getting all that talent on the field at the same time has been an issue because of injuries. Cousins has taken just 52 dropbacks since the start of 2016 with the offense Jay Gruden would have imagined building around -- tackles Trent Williams and Morgan Moses, running back Chris Thompson, tight end Jordan Reed, and wideouts Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson -- all on the field. There's going to be a season every four or five years in which everyone gets right and Washington wins a division title, but as a coach with options, would you really want to hope to get lucky in one of your two seasons at the helm?
