I feel that lost in all the talk about Allen and Payne, and the nitpicking by fans, is how Ionnadis is having an amazing year. I think he's had a sack in every game, and this sack where he manhandled Bulaga was ridiculous:

I remember against the Raiders last year where Ioannidis walked Rodney Hudson back into Carr very similar to what he did to Bulaga... dude is strong like bull

Yeah that was easily the best play of the game. Get some!!!! 2nd favorite was Moreau's strip. That was a fun game for Skins fans. |

https://twitter.com/MarkBullockNFL/status/1044587051524341760
Great point - I have watched that over and over. The great thing about it too, if you watch Payne, lined up right over the center, he drives the center back into Rodgers's face pretty much right off the snap. Rodgers reacts by sliding right in the pocket which puts him closer to the bull-rushing Ioannidis. And then of course Ioannidis crumples up Bulaga like an empty can of beer he just shotgunned. The RG is kind of sitting there deciding whether to help against Payne or Ioannidis, and it's too hard of a choice so he freezes and just does nothing. Great play. |

Wow...destroyed this dude with just brute strength and leverage
OK I love watching this one over and over too. You can tell it's schemed to go exactly behind Scherff. Bergstrom the center doesn't worry about trying to drive his man off the ball, he's just trying to turn him away from the play, just long enough for Roullier to pull around him. Roullier jumps behind Bergstrom and follows Scherff through the point of the attack, and All Day's job is to just follow them through. So Jay basically says: - Brandon, you beat the shit out of your man. Blow him into next week. - Tony, just wall your guy off. - Chase, come around through the hole and clean up any LB or safety trying to fill the point of attack. - Adrian you pound it in. But it all starts with Scherff. If he's stalemated at that spot by his man then Roullier comes around and creates a traffic jam, and at that point All Day is dancing. Jay knows Scherff in a phone booth is an advantage, and he schemed around it. Great fucking play. |

Re: Post game Packers
Glad to hear positives about him. He has become the whipping boy for 90% of all Redskins fan. The guy is held to an absurd standard. His play style is not Desean Jackson where he's blowing by folks. Its getting a step and/or leverage and/or positioning and making a play on the ball because he's bigger, stronger, and has way more athletic ball skills than the man covering him. The more chances he gets the more AS will trust him. Looking forward to seeing the progress over the course of the season.
We can’t throw 50/50 balls every time. If that’s all he can do he is the worst starting WR in the league. |

Montae has a bad tackle grade right now, but his coverage has been pretty good so far. Honestly for a 4th rd guy he's been what we needed him to be

I don't want to make a Federal case out of it but Norman has not lived up to his huge contract, IMO. No interceptions last year was bad enough but he has also been beaten for big plays as a pass defender and run over a few times already this season. Don't get me wrong. He's been a good player for us. What he hasn't provided are the game-changing plays that were expected of him. |

I strongly agree! We have something really good going on with the Dline. It's very exciting to think that they are so young and will undoubtedly get significantly better over time. |

I think he's been solid and there has been times where QBs don't target him as much. This season, aside from the Colts game where everyone but Swearinger sucked, I think he's been great. |

Dunbar is playing as if he is #1 CB on the defense, and I suppose Norman played a role in it. I'm certain Dunbar learned a lot from Norman, as well as Gray. So we can look at this as if we are paying Norman to play and coach young DBs. I think it will be interesting to see what Redskins FO plan to do with Norman if Dunbar and Moreau continue to play well throughout the season. |
Re: Post game Packers
What I've noticed with Norman is that he often tries to punch the ball out instead of making the tackle.
|
Re: Post game Packers
Norman has never been a big INT guy, his career high is 4. Only 10 total for his career. Part of it is his hands suck and second as a top corner you don't get many balls coming your way. He makes up for it by forcing fumbles at least. We can opt out of his contract after this year, the guaranteed money on his deal is $50M. I don't have a problem with his deal.

Norman played great his first year, got injured last year (still played fine) and we'll see about this year. I've been satisfied with his play but wouldn't be surprised to see his contract renegotiated after the year. I think he's committed to our team and knows he's at the tail end of his career. He'll renegotiate and stay another 3 years or so. Other than his play though, I've been MORE than satisfied with the energy he brought to our team. Two years ago the defense looked a lot different and he gave us some bite. That seems to have spread throughout the locker room and that's a big bonus that doesn't show up in the stat sheet. |

The Bama boys were feasting so you gotta leave em in there. Plus it seemed we were only running 2 down linemen for a lot of the game with our OLB's on the edges. And that led to Matt I. sitting out a few more snaps than we'd prefer to see. Whenever we'd go traditional 3 down he was in there. But with that logic (only having 2 linemen for a majority of plays) Settle and Hood just get pushed down the line even further than if we ran 3. Our Defensive Line depth really is a strength this year. I can't believe just HOW night and day it is from last year and even more so than 2 years ago. Amazing. |

Re: Post game Packers
A good question is WHY Kerrigan gets hooked so much vs others? Is it a technique issue? It seems oline closelining occurs to him far more often that to others. Is Kerrigan actually causing this problem?

Used to happen all the time to Orakpo too, I don’t think it’s an issue exclusive to them, we tend to think it’s just our guys since that’s what we pay attention to |
Re: Post game Packers
Just watched game all-22. Not keying in on anyone in particular. First impressions:
1. This defense is good. We made Rodgers Checkdown Charlie. Half way through the 1st quarter he gave up on getting down field passes because coverage was too good and the interior line destroyed the pocket. Their first TD drive was all quick passes, and the defense kept everything in front of them. If it were anyone else than Aaron Rodgers they would have made a mistake and thrown a pick or had an incomplete 3rd down pass somewhere along the way. He got back to it later in the game, but he only ever had time when he scrambled. Certainly the knee didn't help, particularly with the accuracy of throws on the run, but he was still slippery especially for the edge rushers who nearly got home several times. 2. Kerrigan & Co. was pressuring him especially early on and some of the Dline success was because Rodgers had to step up or couldn't get around the edge. Ultimately their impact was limited because he was slippery and began dinking and dunking and they didn't have time to get home. They also did their job in the run and screen game. Smith especially had a number of good tackles in the run game. 3. Ryan Anderson has something. He looks much improved and has more explosiveness and bend around the edge than I thought he was capable of. I think he will have 6+ sacks this year. He also stayed disciplined on the outside and reacted well on screens. This was a pleasant surprise. 4. Monte Nicholson on the other hand is an unpleasant surprise. He was fine in coverage. No complaints there. He's still fast and covers ground quickly and is an asset on coverage, although he didn't get tested because Rodgers couldn't get a deep ball off. The problem is he missed like 5 open field tackles. I think he's playing scared and doesn't want to reinjure his shoulders. Its not good and hopefully he'll play his way through it, but it looks like he's avoiding contact. 5. Doctson was open or had favorable position in a 1 on 1 matchup on many pass attempts, but there were a number of reasons the ball didn't go to him. Smith didn't have time in the pocket or was flushed in the opposite direction, the play was clearly designed for another player, or Smith on 3rd down took the sure 1st down with his legs. In different game situations he will get some of those targets. 6. Jay said GB had a good Dline, maybe that's true, but it was a little concerning how many 2 yard runs AP had. Very small nit to pick I know. 7. Bergstrom and Roullier looked very good in pass pro and good in run blocking. Chase looked a little lost on some second level blocks and on screens, but overall they looked impressive. Nsekhe was ok. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Agree with everything you said. (See KI I'm not crazy, Ryan Anderson did improve! :D) I'd add a few things: -Coverage by our ILBs is vastly improved from last year. Zach Brown might look a little less flashy in the run game, (maybe because others are making plays, plus he's battling an oblique injury) but getting rid of his coverage mistakes is a HUGE plus! (It also allows us to blitz Foster, which he's good at). -On Norman. He's a very good, very smart and tough player. The fact that very few balls are thrown his way speaks highly of his coverage abilities, he does miss some tackles now and then but overall I like his run support and he clearly brought a new level of energy to this locker room (him and Swearinger). I think where he can get beaten is on pure speed and when he tries to punch his receiver at the LOS too hard, he's good in press coverage but not when he tries to jam the WR. -Smith's INT is on Reed because he stopped on his route, but that is not a very smart throw either, if you pause when he throws the ball, the CB has outside leverage on Reed, and is sitting on the route, Jordan is very unlikely getting open on this play IMHO, and the ball was thrown a bit too much outside. Had he not stopped, Reed would have been in position to batt the ball and prevent the INT, but catching it would've been a different story. -I really don't get dropping Smith and Kerrigan into zone coverage... somebody please explain. -The first Packers' TD clearly is on Swearinger, isn't it? WillH you saw the tape, what do you think? -Run blocking by our whole receiving corps is improving. For all the talk about Doctson not delivering, which I agree with, he seems to be willing to block in the run game way more than last year. -Late in the game, when pressured Smith went for the check down a couple of times while he had some wide open receivers down the field. I think this is were our offense's weaknesses might get exposed during the season: it'll be hard for us to come back from big deficits, because Alex Smith is a really good QB, safe with the ball, but not willing to make deep throws under pressure. This is not a real criticism, we knew what we were getting, just saying what I think I saw. -Allen is a beast. |
