other is the defense the giants used on the swinging gate play :) |
Theres only one pure nosetackle in the draft and thats Terrance Cody. It's had to find guys right now in this class that weigh more then 310 pounds on the D-Line.
Cody isnt the only goog NT in the draft, some of the draft boards have Dan Williams NT Tennesse rated #1...Anybody know where hes slotted |

Dan Williams NT Tennesse rated #1...Anybody know where hes slotted
He's 311 pounds? Seems a little light for a pure nosetackle (you at least want a guy to be around 325 pounds), but Scouts Inc doesn't have a full review out on him yet. Then again Jay Ratliff is 303 pounds so you never know. Nevertheless Williams is currently graded out as a first round prospect. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Lets just run the 5-2 defense and get it over with. It's like the 3-4 but the OLB's are DE's. You play 3 DT's and keep AH from being the NT to keep him happy. It would look like this.
McIntosh & Fletcher at LB RE Carter, DT Haynesworth, NT Daniels/Montgomery, DT Griffin, LE Orakpo We would play to the strength of our defense which is the defensive line by keeping our best players on the field. Orakpo would have his hand back in the dirt most of the time. We would cover up our lack of depth at LB. Just like the 3-4 we could drop D-Linemen into zones, run stunts etc. I think that it is a good fit but then again what do I know? I'm just a fan with some football coaching books, a dream, and a keyboard. |

Also, with a 52 your leaving 6 in coverage, some teams play with 3 down lineman and 8 guys in coverage, and still can't get the ball. Also if you play a team like Tennessee or Dallas, the QB can always drop back and roll out of the pocket and run. But other than those reasons, ya I've always wondered why there aren't any 5-2 defenses in college or pro football. |

Not necessarily, like I said before you can always drop a defensive lineman into coverage just like with the 34. Also if you get enough pressure it really doesn't matter who is open. As far as scrambling QB's are concerned you can always spy them. I would not run this defense exclusively, but on most 1st and 2nd downs and in obvious running situations. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I"m for any defense that makes critical stops in the 4th quarter and causes the occasional turnover.
