Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
Yeah you missed the point. The point isn't how many people show up for Cowboys TC vs. Redskins TC. It's how many more people showed up last year for Cowboys camp vs. this year. There's an attendance drop among many teams league wide
I am sorry, but the economy and the last 12 years of general mediocrity by our beloved Skins, plus the heat would cause fan camp attendance to spira anydayl. Not too many people like our chances considering the overall weak level at the QB position this year.
The practices are free so I'm not so sure the economy has anything to do with it. Maybe on gameday but not free practices. |
Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
Gotta pay to get there right? And pay for concessions or to bring stuff with you.

Or take off from work and possibly lose some pay. Only love is free my man - except on 14th Street. |

I understand. It's down all around. But to have a few hundred out at practice for this team is simply shocking. |
Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
When the Steelers are seeing a drop, you know it is more than the state of the franchise in keeping folks away. Folks are not going to spend gas $$$$$$$$$ or any other $$$$ for concessions, etc like Matty and the others have said. You have diehard Skins fans in W VA, PA, NC, all over VA and MD. THink they are going to watch a practice at almost $4 a gallon, plus food and drink? I still have family in MD in LaVale, Columbia, and then Germantown. Close enough to make a go for it, but still would be an expensive trip, just to see a practice. The lockout had to have an effect on the down attendance all over the NFL. The perception is a bunch of overpaid players vs a bunch of greedy owners, all fighting for a bloated pot of gold, while the fans are getting shafted with increasing ticket prices, and ludicrous food and drink prices at the stadiums. Believe me, if we slip into a deep recession, it is going to get bad during the regular season. A guy with a family of 4-5 is going to cough up half or more of a paycheck just to take his family to a game? I doubt it. You will see that 4-5 year waiting list for Skins season tickets evaporate real fast!!!

I dont' have kids, but the children (teens/college age)of friends and family members are Ravens fans. The closest they came to wearing the b&g happened during Gibbs II; they were huge Sean Taylor fans and got a taste of what the Dallas/Skins rivalry is all about. Their question to me, "Why do you Redskin fans continue to make the emotional investment in bad stock?" And you should have seen the LOL text I received the instant McNabb got benched. Kids. |
Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
7,000 + fans is still a hell of a lot more than a couple hundred. Also Dallas is practicing at San Antonio, which is probably 5 hours from Dallas. Actually Houston is a lot closer to San Antonio than Dallas is. If we were practicing 3, 4 or 5 hours a way there wouldn't be anyone there. We're training here in the DC area, right down the toll road. Bottom line is fans are tired of losing, it's showing at training camp and it's showing in game attendence.
I think you are right in that losing is a big factor in keeping folks away, but economics plays a part too. You are comparing TX to the DC area. You are comparing one of the places with the cheapest standards of living(low taxes, etc) to one of the highest(East Coast, DC area). Another reason possibly why that the Skins are down in practice attendance that hasn't been looked at is well, it is DC. LA can do without a NFL franchise because it is LA. Moviestars, beaches, hot chicks, etc. DC is virtually the capital of the planet. Movies is it for LA, politics is it for DC. Folks can't be bothered with a football team, especially if they are living in one of the most expensive places in the world to live in. |

There are probably nearly as many dallas fans in SA as in dallas....totally pro dallas state. |
Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
It being the middle of summer and hotter than balls doesn't help. We haven't been good in a long time and have been a rather dysfunctional team so why would attendance be up? I will always be a Redskins fan until the day I die but damn some days loving them is just hard.

Re: Redskins’ popularity wanes - PFT
Nope, never heard anything.
So much for that waning popularity eh? Pretty nice ratings. |
When do teachers and kids go back to school there? That would take a big bite out of attendance.
