i didn't get that from the article. i don't understand why they would settle before the draft
Leverage. That's why. Once free agency hits, teams are going to come down from that NFL combine high and start thinking clearly. They'll go out and get somebody free agency and most likely resort to plan B provided that the Rams have turned down their initial offer. So what started out as a potential bidding war, ends up a one man party. Dolphins offer X package. If they are turned down, they go onto plan B of Tannehill/FA veteran. Browns offer Y package. If Rams turn them down, they go onto plan B of Flynn and keep picks. Redskins offer Z package. If Rams turn them down, they go onto plan B of Manning/Cousins. (I'm using the players above as examples, you can fill in your choice of person for each of the team provided) So you can see how quickly your investment(draft pick) is devalued come free agency time. Teams aren't going to sit around and wait till the draft, and by then they'll have already moved on. Smoots already said he heard the Dolphins were out of the running. The team that stands the most to gain in all this is the Vikings. |

i'm speaking on the rams point of view. why would the rams pull the trigger?

I just explained why. What I wrote is the main reason why the Rams are better off trading the pick the exact moment of free agency. Come draft time, I imagine the teams looking for that draft pick will have already moved onto their second option. That would leave the Rams holding the bag. The only way that pick holds its value during free agency is if a team does absolutely nothing in regards to acquiring a QB. That said, I imagine teams will be contacting the Vikings next to get a better deal. |

i can see the logic, but i don't see it working out that way

The fewer suitors, the lower the price.. Supply/demand 101. If the Dolphins, Browns and Seahawks have a QB in free agency they won't be in play to trade up for Griffin. Knowing that they aren't bidding against anyone the Redskins won't up the ante, they can sit and wait the Rams to come down to their price (within reason). Comparatively, now since all are in play the Rams can play offers against each other to raise the price. I tend to think it get done this weekend at a two 1sts, a third and fourth. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
if a team wants rg3 now, they will want him in april. if a team wants flynn now, they will get flynn in march. if a team wants manning now, they are foolish

If they decide to meet their need in FA instead of the draft, the value of the Rams pick drops to whatever the best offer we could/would make. So the Rams want the trade asap, while all the teams are in play. BUT it is a two sided deal, and the Skins/Browns/other potential buyers want to see how the competing buyers fill their need via FA. If the Browns sign Flynn, and the Skins sign Manning (for example), then the cost to Miami went down. None of the bidding teams are likely to buy the pick, before a real market for it has been set. |

For all intents and purposes the Browns are out...for now at least.

i'm not trying to sass anyone, this is a legitimate question: when is the last time picks were officially traded before the draft?

Just do it wisely instead of name shopping, which is how Shanny and Allen have done since coming to DC. Don't freak out if we bring in a VJax or someone with a big name/big contract. |

Let me judge this sentence by sentence: - I would like to think that but you'll find people on this board who still want to go out and get the big names - I agree - I won't freak out, but I don't think its the answer, and it can back fire and go under the 'dumb FA' signing column rather than the 'London Fletcher success' signing column |

Meaning that you need to have a good draft and good FA signings. As always, people always want to go to the extremes, they think that we SOLELY focus on the draft w/o signing FAs, or the people that think we need to go after the big name free agent. The way I see it, the Redskins have two options, in which they can have the balanced approach: A.) Trade up for RG3, use the limited # of picks you have this draft, and use free agency. B.) Sign Manning, possibly trade down and use your picks for this year, and maybe use free agency. I don't think you can't go wrong with either of these approaches. Both have risks (as with everything) and both have a good probability of working out well. |
Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades
Wonder if we'd have any interest in Cortland Finnegan. Tennessee used the franchise tag on Michael Griffin and won't offer Finnegan a contract.
