I think it's too early to judge anything from this first game. Cliché, but I think at least they tried to fight back and made it a one possession game. Pre-Griffin, the final score would've been 54 - 7. I don't think that's really exaggerating.

The Redskins need to regroup and look at the positives, because it's still one game out of 16. And there's a lot that they can learn from this game. Especially in the way they need to play the eagles the next time.
Why would you do that? Both were productive in their respective roles in this game.
Because since Week 1 of last season, one has been clearly more valuable than the other.

The Redskins like Morgan because he blocks like a tight end on the edge, which is nice when your gameplan is to run it down their throats. But sometimes, you have to throw the football as well. And having him on the field hurts you on those plays.

The next time we play the eagles it will be a lot different. RG3 was rusty.. that was to be expected. We will slow the game down with our offense to give our defense a chance to catch their breath. Under the circumstances,I'm glad the Redskins fought back. We will have more film on the Eagles as well and will be better prepared. That was the worst start of a Redskins game that I've seen in over 30yrs....but we fought back and made a game of it.
To those who don't believe in preseason games to use to prepare for the regular season, this game is a perfect argument against that. Morris and Griffin both needed at least 2 quarters to get going. And made mistakes that in the first half and early part of the 2nd that doomed them for the rest of the game.

But after saying that, I knew there was no way that Griffin was ever going to play in the preseason, even in hindsight. If Griffin played in the preseason and got hurt in any kind of way, that would've been the end of Shanahan.
I was never a believer until tonite.....in the back of my mind for the last several weeks there was this little voice that kept saying "do you think Griff will be up to speed for game one?" - I kept telling him to shut the hell up, that he is a professional athlete and that preseason games are stupid - hes running on a treadmill, and doing 11 on 11 drills. I owe that little voice an apology.
I just think they knew Griff wasn't a threat to run. They were not respecting any of our play action at all.
Exactly!
Point was not that Oregon never ran the triple option, it was that (at least in the running game) everything they ran tonight was on tape already. Nothing was created in the last eight months.

He adopted some NFL passing plays, the Jackson TD was taken right out of Andy Reid's playbook. Kyle runs that play all the time too.

Kelly gives them a nice schematic advantage. But a schematic advantage should always lose out to a talent advantage in the long run. One game is not a long run...but I suddenly have no desire to see this matchup of coaches played twice every season.
Caching in the NFL comes from tendencies there is no way the Redskins had information on what Kelly would be able to do on defense and offense. These were newish schemes for the Eagles in particular. You didn't have those players running that offense on tape. Sorry but what we saw out the gate was new to us and the NFL. Compound that with awful field position for both the offense and defense of the Redskins for the entire first half and into the third quarter. Miscues are what lost the Redskins the game. Morris fumbles on our first play, Griffin comes out throwing picks, and looks terrible in the first half.

The offense didnt give the defense any chance to rest and gave them half the field to work with.

Only time will tell if this game was a fluke, but a few things are just too constant to overlook.
Piss poor preparedness/discipline. On both sides of the ball. I think just about everybody recognizes this in one way or another. Whether you criticize RG (over shanny) for his injuries because he's not disciplined enough to get out of bounds or look at stupid penalties, it's just ugly part of the time. But my point is it falls on coaching/leadership at the end of the day.
Piss poor protection, which so far looks to have spread to run blocking. This oline is a joke about every other pass play, especially on the right side. As Kyle admitted we masked this last season with the constant threat of the read option. Again only time will tell if they can learn how to protect RG and keep him around longer than a couple years.

Piss poor adjustments. RG is rusty as hell, the oline is Swiss cheese and Helu is hot. So lets keep pressing downfield with lousy routes/formations everybody can cover. I made the comment earlier, shanny has only produced a serious team for half a season, out of three. Tonight looked like the old usual. Too little adjustment too late.

So basically shanahan needs to go after one loss? Let us not overreact and act as if shanahan should be worried about his job. Yea, he still has to prove last year wasn't a fluke, but there are plenty of games left this year for him to prove himself to the league and the redskins fan again.

There's not anything that says you can't use the both of them. Morgan and Hankerson are both productive.

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread

Sometimes, you learn what kind of heart you have when you get the crap beat out of you. Do you get back up and still fight or do you just give up? I saw the Redskins still fighting.

Bottom line- the Redskins were unprepared going into the game and they got embarrassed. I think most of the players and coaches were fighting until the end and came up short. I know that this is the last thing in everyone's mind, but they can later draw back from this experience to be able to comeback or just use in games.

There was at least one player that has bad habits when it comes to games like this though - DeAngelo Hall. He reacts poorly or makes a boneheaded play like the 15 yarder. To me that's the same as just giving up. These young dbs on the team don't need to see that. Haslett really needs to talk to him.

All in all though, I thought everyone else seemed to still be fighting. And how much do you know about yourself if you've never been in a fight? I think the Redskins got effed up too much at the beginning to be able to come back but they went down still swinging and I have to respect that. Any real fighter has to.

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread

This is the best way to see how much heart the Redskins have- by seeing how they respond in next weeks game in Green Bay. It would've been nice if the Redskins would've won their game, but nice don't win fights. The Redskins have to start getting pissed off especially being embarrassed like that. They need to have a fighter's mentality.

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread

I think the Eagles offense might do well early on, but I think there's already a formula to beating them. Survive the initial onslaught (like the old Tyson fights) and after they start to catch their breath, then start attacking.

And for the same reason that the Redskins seemed to have stopped using read-option, the eagles will probably need to do the same- the quarterback is left exposed at times.

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread

Offense:

It was a tale of 2 halves, by my biggest problem was the Oline getting owned in both departments. Second, RG3 mechanics are effed up. Jaws was right. He needs serious work.

Defense:

Our Safety position will struggle as Rambo learns so thats not a grip. A grip is the bad run defense. Call it a combo of bad tackling and getting handled up front.

So imo the game was really lost upfront.

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread

If Vick doesn't stay healthy, the Eagles offense doesn't work. There's always been a good chance that he doesn't. Now it's more probable with the read-option. Chip Kelly's offense is doomed to fail without Vick.
