The only 2 teams I'd see that Campbell may not be the unquestioned starter in '10 on are the Bucs because they're committed to Josh Freeman and the Seahawks because Hasselbeck is still there.

Debates like this REALLY make me question the football acumen of some fans. Campbell's not going to any Pro Bowls but he's not Joey Harrington or Rex Grossman either. Not being able to see value in players that aren't superstars is basics in being a football fan vs. a Madden head with a rooting interest in a particular team.

*EDIT* ^...and my point is made for me.
I agree that JC is better than Harrington & Grossman (although Grossman went to a Super Bowl and JC hasnt even come close) is he really an upgrade? I think the answer in most cases is no. That said, he also not a downgrade, he just a lateral move. Like I said, he'd start but the team wont take off because they will have an inaccurate passer, who's a slow decision maker with no pocket presence at QB. That will get a team through a season but it wont take them where they hope to go.

JC is just a younger version of Gus Ferrotte. He'll hang around the league and make a decent career but nobody will know what team he's playing for.
Campbell would be a #2 or a #3 on all of those teams, except maybe the Raiders. Campbell could definitely find work of some kind in the NFL, but the skins are the most attractive option to him. What are you talking about, he would without a doubt start in Cleveland, Oakland, Carolina, Tampa, and St. Louis.

Cleaveland - Campbell is not better than Brady Quinn and its a toss up with Derek Anderson. Cleaveland's offensive line is worse than ours, if you handn't noticed.

Oakland - if you paid attention, I said he would possibly start there.

Carolina - Do you watch football other than the redskins? Matt Moore's been playing extremely well in Carolina and has the support of his team. Unless there's a coaching change, Moore will be the starter in 2010.

Tampa Bay - The just team spent a 1st round pick on Freeman. He'll be their starter in 2010.

St Louis - St. Louis is unquestionably drafting a QB with their 1st round pick. Its possible they could bring Campbell in and start him the first few weeks, but the pressure would be to high to start whomever they draft by the end of the season.

In general, some of you give Campbell way too much credit. On a GOOD DAY, he's a mediocre QB. On most days, he's below mediocre. Give me a list of current starting QBs in the league who have started atleast the number of games Campbell has and i garauntee you Campbell will be one of the worst, if not the worst, in the group.

He's been inconsistent his entire career - even when he's had a good line in front of him. Yes, he's thrown for over 3,000 yards this year, but almost none of his passes go for more than 5 yards... I'd say atleast 80% of the yards padding his stats are YAC. He holds on to the ball way too long, makes boneheaded plays with regularity, and is just not a good - or even average- QB for someone with his level of NFL experience.

To use excuses we have heard for another QB who shall remain nameless, its hard to tell how good he is or how good he can be because he's stuck on a terrible team. If he had better blocking and more weapons it could be better determined if he can be successful.

I'm also not sure JC could start on Oak as Gradkowski looks decent at times (kind of like JC). Had he not been injured in the game vs the Skins I think Oak might have won.

Cleavlelands O-line is awful... worse than ours even. The same excuses people want to make for Campbell after 5 years and 50+ starts could apply to Quinn at 3 years and about a dozen starts. Campbell wasn't much better than Quinn at the same point in his career and Campbell was benefitting from a much more talented coaching staff and surrounding cast of players at the time. Campbell's exhausted all his excuses. Quinn still has plenty of them. I don't think that Quinn is ever going to be a great QB, but he's got more of a chance to be a good one than Campbell does.

No caveats. No "only as a backup" No "only get rid of him if we can get at least a 2nd rounder back" No "what are the cap implications"

None of that. Do you want Jason Campbell on the Redskins in 2010.

Yes or no?

I've come to the conclusion that my answer is no. I like Campbell and think he can be very good one day. But I want great, and I'm no longer convinced he can be.
I want him back, but also want the Skins to use their first pick on a QB. The number one ingredient to winning a super bowl is an elite QB - Manning, Warner, Brady, Elway, etc. Yes, you can win with the Dilfers, Elis and Big Bens of the world (although I think he's closer to the elite category), but they are more the exception than the rule. There are going to be some QBs in next year's draft that go onto greatness. I think we need to take a shot at getting one.

The O line can be fixed with other draft picks and via free agency. Trade Cooley for picks and grab a RB and Free Safety.

Huh?

They have a Pro Bowler at left tackle with Joe Thomas. They have one of the most promising young centers in the league, Alex Mack. Steinbach makes a very capable guard. The right side of their line could be upgraded, that is true, but there is no way that Cleveland's OL is worse than ours. OL, in fact, is one of Cleveland's strengths. Their offensive problems derive much more from their skill positions, not from the OL.

I actually believe JC will be a pretty hot item and think St. Louis and Seattle will be the teams to take serious looks at him. Holmgren at Cleveland is the darkhorse...I think Zorn QB coach there and bringing along JC would make sense. Anderson is most likly going to be cut, Quinn and JC could make for an interesting battle at QB. I like Cleveland to draft Defense with their first pick and Clausen going to either the Rams or Seahawks...Bruce should tender JC and if he gets offered a second round pick, I couldnt see how he would turn it down. Even though I would like to see JC remain as we pick a young QB to develop in the draft, I have a feeling the "new adminstration (Shanny & Co.)" is gonna want to wash their hands of many, many players currently on the roster, JC probably being near the top of that list.

you can never tell who will be great. elway and manning were number one overall and panned out, for each manning and elway there are ten jamarcus russells, and warner was undrafted and brady was barely drafted in the 7th

Cleaveland - results speak for themselves.

Carolina - Moore's playing well, so why would they bring in someone else to start? Sure, they could bring him in to back Moore up and take over if he hits a wall or starts playing poorly, but I don't think Campbell would "easily" start over many QBs in the league. He could compete with guys like Moore, Freeman, Quinn, etc., but that doesn't mean he'd win. And I certainly think the guys with experience in the system would have the upper hand.

Oakland - I agree. What the heck is the matter with Russell anyways? What a moron.

St. Louis - nothing's garaunteed, but I think its a pretty safe bet. It'll be Suh or a QB for them, but thats a franchise that has absolutely no identity. They're probably the team in the league most desperate for a "franchise QB." The pressure will be high to draft one, although if theyre smart, they'll take Suh.

Tampa Bay - Pretty much all the teams we are discussing couuld making coaching staff changes, but I don't think that would necessarily give Campbell an advantage anywhere. There are two things about Campbell I think we should all remember: 1) Reportely, one of the main reasons Gregg Williams didn't get the job here is he wanted nothing to do with Campbell because he felt he was a "coach-killer." This is the same Gregg Williams who oversaw a defense that practiced against Campbell and observed him in great detail for 3 years. That's telling. 2) Josh McDaniels preferred Kyle Orton over Jason Campbell and thats why Cutler's not our quarterback now. Kyle Orton. Over Jason Campbell.

Very similar to the Falcons situation in 2008. People were calling for them to select Glen Dorsey and instead they selected Matt Ryan. Now Glen Dorsey has been good, but nearly as dominant as people expected him to be. Ryan has also struggled in his second year but still has the makings of a franchise QB, not to mention he led his team to the playoffs last year. On top of that Ryans numbers seem to be misleading he has an 80.1 QB rating with 20 TD's and 12 ints. JC meanwhile has an 85 rating with 18 TD's and 15 int's.

Personally I'm hoping the Rams take Suh, or better yet Clausen. If Shannahan feels Bradford is the best QB for his system then I want him on our team. Select a bunch of O-Lineman starting with the second round and hope for at least a starter and at most a Marcus McNeil type player.

I stand corrected on Cleavelands line. I didnt realize it had improved so much since last year. NFL.com has them ranked 11th this year. Still, I don't change my opinion that Brady Quinn is similar to where Jason Campbell was at the same point in his career and, by default, Quinn has more upside. I seriously doubt there are any teams out there salivating at the possibility of landing Campbell in the offseason.

Re: Do You Want Jason Campbell Back in 2010?

Quinn is pretty bad. He had 3 starts this year where he threw for less than 100 yards. At this point I would say his upside is pretty low. Is there a team out there that would choose Quinn over JC if given the choice between the two??

GusFrerotte 12-31-2009 04:27 PM

Re: Do You Want Jason Campbell Back in 2010?

Sorry Big Hair, but I disagree. Too much bad Qbing going on for JC not to garner at least some interest by at least a handful of teams. I hope we end up getting a QB in rounds 2-3. Canfield, Stull, Sheehan, Brown, Elliot, Lefevour, and definitely Kafka from Northwestern will be available then. Next season Dalton, Keenum, and Enderle will up for grabs. I say keep JC and dump the other two and get some young studs in here. There is a lot of QB talent going under the radar because of the "Big 4". Mallet in 2012 will be the hot commodity at QB, unless he gets hurt. God I hope we don't go Bradford. He isn't even playing in his bowl game. One whack from Ware and his shoulder will be toast.

No, for multiple reasons...1) he doesn't read defenses, does not seem to adjust to the game 2) his accuracy is poor....throws in the dirt, over head, behind receiver. He has to have the team record for 5 yards of fewer pass completions, when the reciever is standing still. When it is 3rd and 8....bs.. 3) no big time plays when we need them....when was the last time he took us down the field to win the in the final 2 minutes? 4) slow release......reaction time......and stupid decisions.....2 intential grouding calls in one game? 4) he doesn't want to be back...when asked he said, "we'll see"....I don't want him back if he doesn't want to be back. 5) he will never take a team to the SB...I don't care how great the line is.....that is an excuse....good QB's make plays. 6) it really doesn't matter...if the Skins wanted him back he would already be signed.......he will not be the Skins starting QB next year......good luck in St. Louis/TB ....or wherever Jason.......you will be lucky to be a starter next year........................

Re: Do You Want Jason Campbell Back in 2010?

I say yes. My reasoning would be that how do you evaluate this guy with everything that happened?

My two big negatives for evaluating -

- Crappy o-line in front of him
- Playcalling change mid-season

And then I look at his body of work and say, well he still didn't have that horrible of a season in spite of everything that happened and he's shown enough for me to say that with a decent o-line in front of him his prospects would probably fare better, I'd say keep him. As a gm I wouldn't give him that multi-year deal with long term security but I'd give him at least another season or two to gauge him.

But as a GM I'd also have to consider the prospects of another team wanting to sign him. In the event he remains a restricted free agent all offseason (I'm not too sure what the deal is with that) and teams came at me with decent offers, such as a 1st/3rd or even a 1st/2nd to sign him then I'd have to consider what might be the best deal for the new coach/long term future of the team might be.
Quinn absolutely sucks Big Hair. How can you get pulled for Derek Anderson? Last decent NFL QB from ND was Joey T. It is like a curse or something, even bigger than the Madden curse.
Actually Anderson got pulled for Quinn this year, and he only got his job back when Quinn went on IR with a broken foot.
... teams came at me with decent offers, such as a 1st/3rd or even a 1st/2nd to sign him then I'd have to consider what might be the best deal for the new coach/long term future of the team might be. ...
You are overreaching by a large margin with those expectations, but a trade is the best case scenario at this point.

One thing I have realized this year is that if you have to consistently make excuses for a quarterback then you do not have a very good player.

It's almost torture for him because here comes yet another system and yet another patchwork offensive line. We should keep him because there are no FA QBs that we will land that will be better and we need many other areas that need to be addressed before QB.

The only way I'd have him back is as 'cannon fodder'. By that I mean that if we are in a rebuilding year, why beat up a young QB.

His final numbers:

3,618 yards, 20 TDs, 15 INTs, 64.5% completions, 86.4 rating

All while playing behind a bad OL. Seems like a guy worth keeping around to me.

I've already tried using this logic in other threads Matty. There are still many people who don't want Campbell back. Campbell's name is associated with bad seasons and for that reason he's the scapegoat. I think there are many more areas that need to be addressed first. Get rid of the below average players before the ones who finished slightly above average.

Just an FYI - Carson Palmer's numbers:

3,094, 21 TDs, 13 INTs, 60.5% completions, 83.6 rating

Plus a far better running game and line for Carson.
