Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread
if we let Pot Roast walk, do we get a comp pick?
if so, will the fact that we only had him for 1 year mean we get a later pick? not apples to apples but the bo sox make a habit of signing good FAs, letting them play out their contract then collecting a comp pick when they sign with someone else. |

Some people take a little while to develop and then they rule for years. My magic eight ball says that this is true for Paea. :) |

Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread
As with anything in football your performance is subject to the performance of those around you. Paea is positioned well to make a decent impact.
Knighton is that big body in the middle that we've been lacking, so lines will be forced to double team him when running the ball. That leaves Paea and Hatcher to attack upfield and shoot gaps to penetrate and disrupt, or just flat out set the edge in the run game. Teams will try to run up the middle and run into a wall with Knighton. Backs will be forced to bounce it a bit, in which case Paea and Hatcher are quick and strong enough to set an edge. It should work well. Paea will not have a lot of sacks for us. But that's not what he was brought here for. He can however provide enough of a push in the middle on passing downs to enable the edge rushers to get home. If Kerrigan gets 14 or 15 sacks, it will be in part thanks to Paea and Hatcher pushing the pocket on passing downs. |

This would be the first signing that SM has done that I think really makes 0 sense. Why would you give up a draft pick for a 30 year old safety who's coming off two bad years? TB was awful the last few years and they were apparently going to cut him. Seems like a Bruce Allen type of signing.

Because the cost was a sixth rounder next year, in 2016, and he got back Goldson and Tampa's 7th rounder next year in 2016. So he basically slid down from the 6th to the 7th next year, just to get Goldson. It is basically a no cost move. The cap space used on Goldson is the much bigger cost in the equation, McCloughan basically recognized that the Bucs were going to cut him, so rather than having to bid for him and hand out a signing bonus in free agency he gave up inconsequential picks to take on the contract as is, which calls for very little in the way of guaranteed money the rest of the way. It is essentially a no risk but high reward deal. If Goldson sucks then we cut him with no major cap consequences and no draft resources surrendered. And it's very likely that he is better than anything we currently have. Given the high price teams are paying for safeties these days, and given how poor the draft is this year at safety, this is a terrific move. |

That's good. Just seems like another Ryan Clark, one year rental type of deal. He's a big hitter and all but his best days are obviously behind him. |

Bring him in only only in 2nd and 3rd and long. The regular 1st and 10 and running down DL should be a rotation of Knighton, Paea, Baker and Jean Francois. I am hoping they do this so Hatcher can be healthy the entire season and most importmantly playoffs. |

... and, even if it is, your alternative is ... what? It is another one year rental. However, the only alternative (as Schneed has already indicated) was to pay big money and make a long term commitment to a mediocre free agent. I have no doubt that, at worst, he will not be a downgrade from last year. At best, he shows that the TBay experience was more scheme related than talent related and is a significant upgrade (It's not the same I know -- but Revis certainly rebounded from his down year in TBay). Truly, this was about the best we could do in getting an experienced FS. And to all you DHall to FS folks ... you can speculate on his ability to make the switch but he's no spring chicken either and, given his inexperience at the position, he could very easily end up being worse than Clark was last year (even if more physically talented). Let go of your Little Danny syndrome folks. Not everything is getting fixed this year AND it would be an institutional mistake to try. Brick by brick, year by year - build depth, develop players. I am betting we pick a FS in the 5th or 6th round. If in three years he develops into a Kam Chancellor (5th Round, 2010) or R. Sherman (5th Round, 2011) kind of guy, wouldn't that be sweet? |
Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread
I like the move. Some FAs haven't worked out well in Tampa (Michael Johnson) after they went on a spending spree last season. Given how shitty Tampa has been, this is probably more of a team issue.
I'm not going to cry over a 6th round, especially if we trade down. I think anyone who think this is a terrible move, are just reaching for something to complain about. |
Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread
we needed a starter at FS and we got one on a 1 year, pay-as-you-go plan. not very exciting, but it's a solid move. I doubt he'll stick around for more than a year or two, but that's fine.

I'm not so sure. He is 30, which is old but not ancient. His struggles in Tampa were more scheme fit than anything else. I agree in that it's not like we just brought Sean Taylor back from the dead, but there's definitely a ton more upside here than Ryan Clark ever brought. |

Is Ridley good at pass pro? I guess that's what I'd like in any RB we sign.

Doubt it. He was pretty much a non-entity in the Pats passing game. Vereen was the designated 3rd down back.

Very interesting...had heard from Keim in the past we werent interested in Wisniewski because Kory L had been fine in the Center position. I wonder if the thought would be guard for Wisniewski? I think he played Guard in college. I wouldnt be opposed to him here... Sidenote, this happened last week. Funny how information has been very slow getting to the media since McC been here...I think dismissing some of the staff/players has gotten rid of leaks on the team. Keim said in his mailbag last week its been much much harder to get information about draft visits this year than any other time. |
Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread
I figured Wisniewski would have already signed with someone.
I dont know much about Wisniewski. I like Lich for what he is, seems like Wisniewski is kinda the same player. can play guard or center and is slightly above average. These are the under the radar, small moves that really help. (assuming Wisn can be what Lich has been for us). Move Lich back to guard, cut chester, sign Wisn for center? i couldnt imagine where our O line would have been without Lich last year. He was by far our 2nd best O line guy. |

Well, I guess if we're going to be one of the worst kickoff teams, hopefully we have good coverage units. Hoping to replace Forbath over the next few years to a kicker who can kick it out of the end-zone and be more reliable with the longer kicks.
