Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Yeah, but there was basically zero chance of drafting another QB in the first round before Rivera had a chance to evaluate Haskins himself. Not sure there was a lesson to be learned there. Chase was the correct pick.
I'm NOT for reaching for Lance if they pick in the top 10. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
57 of Alex Smith's 71 completions have come 10 yards or under...
36 of those 57 completions are in the middle of the field (Checkdowns) He's played fine and I love the dude's will and guts but there is no way you don't draft a QB in the top 10 this yr.
Yup, you are going absolutely nowhere with Alex at QB and he isn’t the future. The best argument I’ve heard on why to play him is to evaluate other skill positions. While it’s a nice story, bringing Alex back next year would be another in a long line of garbage decisions by an organization preaching culture change but doing the opposite. You need to find your QB this offseason, the sooner you do it the faster we can get on to this future I keep hearing about but not witnessing. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I think all the posts do a good job of laying out the "what if" scenarios. Theres good arguments to ride with Alex next year and good arguments to draft a QB. I think it comes down to personal choice.
I think we still have a lot of future unknown events that will dictate the decision. 1. Can Alex Smith stay healthy and finish the season not on IR? Thats not a given and if he tears an ACL or something, he'd be 37 next year and miss TC etc. 2. Assuming we are out of the Lawrence-fields sweepstakes and land the no. 5-10 pick, do we have a high enough grade on Wilson or Lance to take them vs a LT/LB/CB? 3. Maybe something stunning happens in FA and a Drew Brees is available .. --------- Im fine with drafting a QB, going with Alex or going a vet FA route. I do expect to be .500 or better next year. ------------------ Alex smith contract -- 24.4M cap hit for 2021, if we cut him hes a 10.8 dead cap hit (but wed free up 13.6M) |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
One thing about the Tua vs Young talk...first both have been the real deal. But can Tua stay healthy and make it threw a full NFL season?
I have a tonnnn of doubts |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I get that and I know he is ok but he's also what? 37 Years old? I just think Ron will want to draft his own guy
Well if we're going by the Tom Brady rules Smith has 5 more years of starting qb play left in him, so def. no need to draft a new guy right now. Seriously I don't even understand why this is a discussion. We have an immobile 37 year old qb, any half decent team understands that's not an ideal position for the short or long term. Only way we don't draft a qb is if the guy Ron wants isn't available. |

Smith's mobility doesn't bother me though - he's still more mobile than a lot of QBs in the league. What I don't understand is the talk about bringing in a Veteran QB. Why would you release Smith and start over with another Veteran, who will command a decent salary himself, and who will have to get acquainted with the offense / staff, etc., when you have Alex Smith already under contract. |
You guys have way too much faith in this roster. I applaud it but I just can't do it
Yeah lol. When i look at every team in the division and the rest of their games I see 5 wins at best for any of them. Could have something to do with a 2-18-1 record outside the division. One win was a squeaker by Dallas over Atlanta (who sucks) with Dak. I mean let’s face it, the division can only beat itself and that is 6 wins tops but nobody has a perfect division record so far. Douche Snyder ruined my Sundays |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
NFL Networks' Ian Rapoport said Washington head coach Ron Rivera wants Alex Smith back as the team's quarterback in 2021.
How about no |

How about no
I'm fine with it if we aren't able to draft a rookie QB that will be ready to play immediately. Ideally we would move on from Smith but there are multiple teams that will look for new QBs so our options might be limited. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Yeah, I'm fine with that too. If he finishes the season strong and healthy, and he wants to keep playing, why not bring him back? A Smith is more than capable of running this offense for another year if healthy.
That doesn't mean that if things break your way in the draft, that you don't draft his replacement. They should absolutely be looking at drafting a QB next year. However, they might not like the options at their pick - at least not someone to come in and start right away. |

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Why don’t we stop guessing and see what happens. It’s nice to surmise about the thought process of coaches. It’s obvious that Alex can still play at a high level.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
How much does Smith cost us next season as a player compared to cutting him? Can't help wondering if on balance keeping him another season is really that expensive considering the vet leadership he brings. Kicking him to the kerb this offseason then bringing in another vet doesn't make sense to me if he can go one more year (or 2?). I know Rivera's said he wants to keep him anyway and I'd be surprised if he wants to retire now, so just hypothesising.
|
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I don't know how reliable it is, but according to Spotrac, he costs 24.4 mil next year. If they cut him after June 1st, he would cost 5.4 mil against the cap in 2021 and 2022.
Barring injury, Haskins shocking the world and beating him out (if he's still here), or a rookie beating him out, my guess is A Smith will be the starter next year. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I'm fine with Smith coming back as the starter next year, but beyond that no. In the 1% chance Ron is encouraged by Haskins' attitude (and isn't just giving him lip service so we can drive his price up for the offseason) maybe another year of tutelage under Smith would help, if not I expect Ron to grab someone to develop under Smith for next year. Kyle Allen is a nice kid but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he's our long term future.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I like winning. When Alex plays, we win more than we lose. Let's bring him back in 2021, and build the rest of the team.
We add 2 more guys on D, and the group is elite. |

Major props to AS
3-1 this year 9-4 as a starter in WSH |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
More winning. We don't need to force a QB pick. We can get an elite CB, S, LB, or LT.
If we keep winning, probably won't even have the option to get one of the big 4 anyways. Will be interesting to see how far Trask moves up the team's board. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Is there a team that is tougher than this WFT? Between Alex Smith's comeback, and Ron's cancer battle - they both are just exuding toughness and resiliency throughout this team.

He's not the sexy 350 yards and 3 tds a game QB but the dude never gets us into big trouble, he's just a smart checkdown QB and there is nothing wrong with that if you have a great defense |

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
What AS has done really is just short of a miracle. Not to mention he is a 100% outstanding guy. But at this point in his career and after such a crushing injury, he just isn't the same player. The goal is to compete for a SB. Not have a sub par 500 record and make the playoffs cause the division is so bad. Can you compete for a SB w/ Smith as your QB? I would say no, you can't. We simply will not be able to score week in and week out against a team like the Saints, Bucs or Rams, or even Dallas w/ a healthy Dak. We are going to need a guy to win games when the defense plays poorly. We need a guy who can take over a game, not just manage it. If we are going to get to that next level we need a guy who can take us there, who can make the guys on offense better. That guy is not Smith.
|
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Worth pointing out, even 2 years ago, he never really had the weapons he had in SF and KC. He still had and has us winning.
Thinking about it, how about comeback player of the millennium? Has anyone else ever done what he did and come back, and be a winner too? And I'd consider extending that across all sports; Armstrong's come back from cancer might be the only example that ranks higher. |

Completely disagree. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
I think you can win with Alex Smith as long as you have an OC who plays to his quick pass game strengths, have the right players to match the scheme plus a strong defense.
He and We are not set up to come from behind by 3 plus scores and I really credit the D for the comeback vs the Steelers more so than the offense bc they shut the door and allowed our offense time to chip away at the lead. A steelers TD in the 2nd half and we lose the game. For the most part Alex Smith and select pieces like McLaurin/Gibson/Thomas/McKissic match up very well with our offensive scheme. if we had a true run game between the tackles to lean on sometimes .... now that would be something. But I do think this is about as good as Alex Smith will look/produce. This is a very good situation and fit for him. edit - with all that said, I think his Steelers game was a step back. he played scared in the first half getting rid of the ball too quick and seemed to hesitate on some designed quick throws letting the window close. |
Looks like the elephant man leg. Wonder what it looks like now?
It probably looks very similar except that the pink skin has probably healed up well and taken on a more natural color, and i'm sure it is less swollen. You can see in some of the current photos of him that his lower leg still looks bumpy and wavy, and that is why I'm sure he will continue to wear the neoprene sleeve / cover over it and the brace that he wears. I wonder if he will need more operations after his playing career has ended. |
Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
We should hang on to Alex Smith and draft for other needs. He will help us win games, and with a few more pieces we should start having a good record. After all, players will accept less money to go to a team that is a winner.
Setting the salary cap equal for all teams means that bad teams almost never get better. With all this "making things fair" with allotting equal numbers of college football scholarships its amazing the turnover at the top of the national rankings from year to year (sarcasm). The same happens in the NFL. The Patriots were always able to get players on the cheap because the players felt they could win a championship with them. So getting/keeping a winning attitude (and making awesome second-half adjustments) is worth a lot for getting top-rate free agent talent without having to pay a hefty sum, and I think Alex at the helm (in the short term) along with getting more talent at other spots gives us the best chance of moving up into the upper half of the NFL. On a final note, it's not the right time to get rid of Snyder. He has royally screwed it up for many years. But now that it appears that he's finally doing it right is not the correct time to ditch him. But it appears that Bezos (who owns the Washington Post and forced our name change) may want to buy the team. Since a team name usually is supposed to inspire "fear" in the opponent, if he buys the team, may I suggest the name (Amazon) Cannibals. (sarcasm) |

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Alex been a great story, but we should look to improve the position. I’d say trading out Haskins for another young QB would be the way to go. Kyle Allen probably not getting a contract coming off serious injury...I’d say Alex, Kyle and another young QB.
I’d say we are not under pressure to chose a QB early, tho. I think chosing the right kinda player for the culture change is important. |
Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)
Chico I have to respectfully disagree with you. We need a young franchise QB who can pass, manage the game and most importantly, be a good or very good RUNNER to extend plays, get yardage with his feet and just keep the defense honest . All the top QB in the draft now have those traits. If you can draft correctly, you get a great QB to help the team win for at least a decade. Wouldn’t that be nice??!
Alex Smith has almost zero mobility and can NOT out run anyone anymore. This is a big handicap. Allen is unproven on this team and frankly a gamble with his injury. Haskins may not have the ability to be a starting QB in the NFL. He needs to spend the summer working in his FUNDAMENTALS, which are still a very weak part of his game. Then the mental pet of the game. We simply do not have the time to see if he can be a good QB in 2-3 years. Draft the BEST QB left in the draft with our first round pick. Start him right away and use Alex as his backup and mentor. Trade Haskins for whatever the market will bear - which isn’t much. Allen as our third Qb. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
