Who's to say he's not? I'm not going to nitpick about whether you think he's first round material or not. If you don't fine, but I think you can find some weakness (imaginary or not) in every player out there. That's one of the reasons we have coaches. Here's a piece on Unger. Of course you can find weaknesses in everyone's game. I'm not discounting that, but at the same time it would be foolish for anyone to overlook Mack's weaknesses.

That's what player analysis is. You analyze a player for their strengths and weaknesses to see if that player fits what you are looking for - depending on what you value for a player at a particular position. If there is some concern or doubt about a Center's balance (or technique) - I think you absolutely have to research a little more to get to a comfortable decision either way.

I know what player analysis is. Of course you check out what a perceived weakness may be. Whether it's Mack, Unger or anyone else. I just don't think it's going to be as big an issue as you seem to think it is.

And that's all I've been pointing out. Everyone that's on the Mack bandwagon has praised all of his strengths, but they all have failed to point out any weaknesses.

I don't mean to be a hater or anything like that, but that's what stood out to me - his falling down, balance (I [U]mistakenly[/U] questioned this as his lack of strength), and technique (specifically leaning/overextending).

You can't overlook any of this with a Center. And if you notice in the article, Mack expressed the scrutiny that the scouts had with him. They all want to be comfortable with picking him up earlier in the round rather than later (at the expense of what could be- being able to picking someone else with a better impact for the team). And maybe that's part of the scrutiny, too; they may be trying to see if he is willing and flexible enough to change if need be.

I understand what you're saying. I'm not trying to be a horses ass. I think, THINK, part of the reason Mack ends up overextending and falling is because of his aggressiveness. He does not stop. So after he blocks his man, he either just keeps on with him until the whistle blows, or until him and his man go down. He is relentless. Sometimes he goes to another player that he may not even be in position to block an overextends, but he goes after him anyway. I look at this as a good thing. What bothers me is, seeing linemen on their feet just standing there because they blocked the one guy they were suppose to, or the play has already gone by them. Mack doesn't just fall down like a big oaf, he's usually taking someone with him. Sometimes 2 or 3 someones. At least that's what I've seen from watching a lot of film on him.

Yeah, I agree with you with his strengths. What gets overlooked with players like Mack that fans love are their possible weaknesses. I agree that he falls sometimes because of his agressive play and great effort, but some his technique (noted in the article due to what he learned in high school) is also at fault. I see that he overextends sometimes, maybe trying too hard for the block. Most of the time in college this is an advantage. Will this work in the NFL... we won't know until he plays.

What's hard is- to get a comparison of a player in the NFL that falls down like he does.

His technique he learned in highschool was to not use his hands. He was surprised he could use them when he got to college which makes it even easier to block someone. He had a sensational pro day today according to reports. I'm done. Like you said, we'll see.

Mack measured in at 6'4-1/4" and 307 pounds, measurements that NFL scouts drool over for a center with any sort of athleticism. He ran a 5.17 and 5.23 in the 40-yard dash, had a 28-1/2" vertical, an 8'10" broad jump, 4.75 short shuttle, 7.31 cone drill, and benched 225 pounds 20 times.

not insane numbers, but very solid.

I think the Redskins have to look at him this way: that he's the fourth or fifth best lineman in the draft (depending on what we think of Oher/Smith). If we treat him any other way, we're probably missing the bottom line.

Of course, don't take the fifth best OLman if you can get the third.
