Yes. D.Hall deserves some blame but Smith was way over the top of what is acceptable for coaches. Smith came close to a Woody Hayes moment.

When Hall charged into that sideline, that was the match, Landrys hit was the kerosene.
you have to watch the replay and keep your eye on hall before the hit. hall was chasing down the play, running hard. he was already on the sideline before the ish hit the fan. he never ran over or onto the falcons sideline.

Heres an interesting observation from Jerome Bettis off SI.COM
I see how the scuffle between Atlanta and Washington started. Matt Ryan got hit a little late on the sideline, and when you see that happen to the leader of your team you start thinking all of the worst things. No other single player has a bigger part in whether you win or lose. I know how much it scares you as a player, and so you want to retaliate. I get that. It's going to happen. Coaches understand that.

But you're entering a danger zone when you get involved as a coach, Mike Smith. Think about this in terms of war. When you see your general go to the line, all hands are on deck. Smith got into the fray and every single Falcon was there in a heartbeat. Fine. But what happens next time? All of a sudden, it's in the head of every one of those Atlanta players: When someone crosses our sideline or touches our quarterback late, it's on. And it can't be that simple. I don't think Smith should be punished, per se, but he needs to come out and say he went too far before his own players get the wrong idea.
I agree with Bettis, however I think the NFL should punish Smith. When he was asked about the situation, he flat out lied and made excuse for what happened. He should follow Bettis advice:
If Mike Smith was "defending" Matt Ryan then why did he go after Hall? Your way of thinking is just like Goodell, hold the coaches to a different standard than you hold players. I think Zorn would know better than not to act the way Mike Smith did. Do you think Joe Gibbs would do what Mike Smith did?

I am by no means defending Hall, and I'm sure he is to be blame with what happened as well. What upsets me is that everyone, including Redskins fans, like to pretend that the ATL bench was completely innocent. For all I care, the league can fine and/or suspend Hall, but Mike Smith and the other coach that was involved in the incident should be fined and/or suspended.
If you watch the tape Hall WALKED TOWARDS the Atl. bench talking smack with #51 AFTER Landry hit Ryan.....then the fight began. If Hall would've just done what Landry did then nothing would've happened.
I'm over it but when you're getting your ass beat and you're on a 2-6 team that can't tackle then shut up and play ball. Now Hall is talking about fighting the coach in the off season and talking about calling Goddell. Don't try and fight their team or the coach in the off season, get an INT, or knock the crap out of Michael Turner. Instead you cry like a baby w/out it's milk bottle.

If Mike Smith would have acted like a coach then none of this would have happened, or D. Hall would have been solely to blame for this.

In Goodell's league, the players get heavily punished when they mess up, and if this is the case then coaches should be punished too. Hell at least Hall is talking about this, Smith is playing dumb and not owning up to his mistake.

Once again, D. Hall screwed up too, but I find it ridiculous that fans of this team are ok with Mike Smith (a coach) being aggressive and fuel up a sideline altercation, while they want D. Hall to shut up about and let his teammate get harassed by the opponent's sideline.

That was my point as I watched the game. I lost all respect for Smith. Landry was wrong because he hit a player out of bounds. Even more wrong because it was a franchise QB. We got penalized for pushing him down in bounds. If Hall hadn't tried to defend Landry people would have called him a punk for leaving his teammate. The players on the Falcons that started fighting were wrong, but I understand their defense of a teammate. The coach elbowing and instigating is the worst though.
Initially, when they said two personal fouls I assumed one on Smith and one for Landry.
If Goodell doesn't fine and/or suspend Smith then he is proving himself a liar. Why should the NFLPA want to negotiate with him when he shows that he views players as a commodity coaches as above the rules?

Yep I'm 100% ok w/ what Smith did cause Hall started fighting and talking shit with one of his players. Hall is everything that's wrong with this team and Snyder should give him the ax when the season is over. Over paid pussy ass corner who doesn't want to hit anyone then says mgt should've gotten better players. How can you root for guys like him???? Again watch the tape. Andre Carter is right there too and you didn't see him getting involved with that shit. Landry is WALKING AWAY yet Hall still stayed behind being the instagator.

skinsfan69 . . . i guess your watching a different video clip than everybody else.

d hall was not innocent but he didnt go over to the sideline to start ish, he was already there as a result of chasing down the play. if you cant atleast see that and concede that point your just being bias to serve your own personal observation.

i dont like d hall, i think he does some stupid PF things on the field that reflect poorly on the type of player i want in a skins uni and isnt that great of a corner but in this specific instance he wasnt all that culpable compared to mike smith and others.

go skins!!

I'm sorry but the offensive line is everything what's wrong with this team. And well I'll root for him because he's in a Redskins uniform. I'm just sick of all of you people that like to point the blame at one single person. Or fans with agendas.

You don't like D. Hall, well then get on Carlos Rogers' case for not being a better corner. Is Hall overpaid? Yes, but that's on management. Does D. Hall sucks at tackling? Of course, and so does the entire team. People need to stop being so overdramatic about players like Hall.

I don't like Hall for several reasons. He's been there 10 minutes yet he has already called out MGT that signed his sorry ass to a nice contract. Then he's called out teammates when he can't even tackle my mother. WTF??? Why say that shit to the media? Do it behind closed doors. So that shows me what kind of guy he is. Rogers AT LEAST has the courage to hit someone. When he does get beat he seems to be in position most of the time. The line is a mess but those guys just don't have the talent to play at this level. Hall does.

If Landry didn't hit Ryan after he was a meter out of bounds this never would've happened

So how come you're not complaining about Haynesworth walking over and joining the altercation?

And you're so full of it...watch the tape again Hall got Landry out of there, that's why "Landry walked away". Hall was running towards both Landry and Ryan, and you clearly see the ATL sideline get on Landry.
