I'd be grateful if someone with insight as to how all this works could explain why we waived Mitchel. The reports coming out of camp were positive; I know he's out for the year, but wasn't there some way to save him and just designate him on IR? Colts sure pounced.
That sucks. The Redskins should have just waited and have him count on their 90 man roster.

Colts awarded cornerback Tevin Mitchel off waivers from the Redskins and waived safety Robert Smith.

Oh well, he wouldn't have played this year and next year they'll get someone else.

Until someone has 4 years in the league, they cant be placed directly on IR without passing through waivers until the first cut down date. So to be able to use the roster spot, the waived him with an injury designation. If he had cleared waivers, they have the option to put him on IR or give him an injury settlement. He would have been put on IR since he is gone for the year and the injury settlement is he gets paid for what he is expected to miss. So the injury settlement would have been the same as putting him on IR for salary purposes, both one years pay.

So the options were leave him occupying a roster spot til the first cut or waive him. With Amerson and Breeland out, I am assuming they figured they needed someone who can practice with the team, so they tried to get him through waivers.

I think they just wanted to have another roster spot to sign an additional player - one of the 2 that they signed yesterday.

They cherry-picked McCloughan's draft choices - goes to show the respect he has on other teams. That sucks.

But there's no doubt, McCloughan and his staff put in a lot of time in scouting Mitchel. There seems to be a lot of work that they invest in every pick now that McCloughan's here because the pick is just that - an investment.

Many, many thanks for the detailed explanation. Very helpful. Too bad we lost out on him. Does this mean that the Colts don't waste a roster spot on him in the same way that we would have? In other words, by claiming him off waivers, do they have more flexibility in terms of how they designate him going forward?

When you claim someone off waivers, he immediately takes a roster spot, which is why the Colts cut someone. They have the same options we did, hold onto him until first cuts with him taking up one of the 90 roster spots, then put him on IR (which will free up his roster spot at that time), or try and get him through waivers to put him on IR now. I really cant see them putting him through waivers now, otherwise they probably wouldnt have claimed him. It looks like the Colts are holding onto him for next year and beyond.

We have to many injuries at CB right now to waste a spot on a player who won't play till next year. Scott can find another one next year. It is interesting though that a team claimed an ir'ed rookie.

Mallett and Brian Hoyer repeatedly fed Hopkins during the morning practice at the Bon Secours Training Center. Whether it was to the left side, over the middle or on the right side of the field, Hopkins came down with the ball time and again on Thursday. An 800-yard rookie season in 2013 begat a 1,200-plus yard season in 2014. The increase in production amplified a confidence that’s been evident since the Texans used their first round pick on the Clemson wideout two years ago.

Always good to get the other side's opinion.. At least from their biased view, doesn't seem like our secondary has improved much...
Running back Matt Jones ... showed the toughness that has been advertised since his selection out of Florida in May’s NFL Draft on one play in particular. On 3rd and 3, Jones, who was running with the second-team offense, received the handoff from Kirk Cousins and sprinted to his left before lowering his shoulder around the line of scrimmage, plowing forward to pick up four yards for the first down. If Jones keeps progressing the way the Redskins are hoping he does – and takes the No. 2 running back job behind Alfred Morris – the Redskins have two extremely tough runners to throw at opposing defenses in 2015.
So instead of a "Thunder & Lightning" backfield we'll have a "Thunder & Thunder" backfield.

I am okay with that.

Re: All things Redskins training camp

Per the Twitterverse:

Scherf is at guard and Moses at tackle for the second straight day against Texans. (I may be mistaken, but I don't think Scherf has played any RT snaps against them).

Moses is apparently looking a lot better than he was last year - staying lower and not lunging as much.

Questions being asked are:
(1) Given that he hasn't taken a snap at RT against Texans, seems more than a "Just trying him in different positions" type switch. Does this mean that Long/Scherf is no longer plan A?

(2) Is this the switch to guard due to (a) Moses's improvement; (b) Sherf not being good enough at RT; (c) Long not getting it done at RG; or (d) some combination of the three?

Also - Crowder appearing to be unstoppable. A. Roberts days in the slot may be numbered.

I think Moses at RT says more about him than it does Scherff. If he's that improved that's an awesome thing for our line.

If they are confident that Moses is now a real starter I'll be delighted.
He looked pretty flatfooted last year.
When he wasnt lunging.....
