I used to work at BJ's Restaurant in La Mesa in my younger days. Got to bus his table one time. I guess you could say we're great friends lol.

I walked on 1 year at SDSU. We played Utah at home that year. That was pretty cool. Got to see the future 1st overall pick up close and personal. He was good. That team was good.

Agreed. He’s got to think of his future life and how that could be adversely damaged if he is injured again.

I’m interested in whether he wants to return as any of the following:

A. NFL TV Commentator

B. NFL Coach (position coach or higher)

C. NFL Team Executive

A. Being a tv commentator takes a lot of time and effort. Many don’t make it over time.

B. He’d have to start as a position coach (QB coach like Zorn did) and then hopefully move up the ladder to OC or higher IF he is successful.

C. I think his time last season being an informal advisor to Dan Snyder might get him a shot at being a team executive- perhaps in the Redskins organization (?). I believe Smith helped cut Dan Snyder’s dependency on Bruce Allen last season. But it appears that Kyle Smith is well on the road to being the Redskin’s new GM. What would Alex’s executive job be with Rivera / Kyle Smith making all of the Redskin’s major football decisions.

I think Alex Smith will quietly retire and in a year or two he’ll come back to the NFL in on of the capacities listed above.

A Don't really see him as the personality to do that, at least not long term. More likely a motivational speaker than sat in the booth if he goes into media?
B Got mentoring skills but can he actually coach up kids to a better level, and beyond that, manage an entire offense then maybe a team? I back this as most likely horse and hope he succeeds.
C Does he have the business know how to carry this role? Can he evaluate talent if he goes the scouting/personnel route? I wouldn't bet against him...

I'm rooting for him to win a backup job with us, but I really think his value is mentoring Haskins. I hope he does get an executive or coaching job for us but him sticking around even if not, is likely a huge benefit to Dwayne.

A year of being a great guy in the locker room and than the Front Office. He is the type of guy you want around your organization on and off the field.

Just watched the E60 with my kids this week...I had no idea his leg was in THAT condition during the surgeries. It's a miracle they were able to save it. There was no skin from knee to ankle remaining.

Amazing story. Yes it's gross to look at, but these are the types of lessons and role models kids should be exposed to, the perseverance he has is amazing. They've watched me fight through surgeries and not walking many times, but man...my problems look like a picnic compared to Alex's leg.

Simply unbelievable. I felt like many people that his injury would certainly be career ending. So does Alex Smith start this year at some point? Or do we try and trade him now that he will be able to be signed elsewhere?

I dont think anyone is going to trade for him. I also dont think we should trade him. He is one of three quarterbacks on the roster and if he can actually help that is great. It isn’t like he had a head injury and needs to think about his future. He had an infection which isn’t going to necessarily come back if he gets hurt again. Amazing that he is back and cleared for action. Great story.

He still has to be cleared by the NFL/team. Think it's Haskins job for sure though with a fairly short leash. Allen will be on his heels. Either way, this is nothing but a good thing and I'm very happy for Alex Smith.

I didn't think this day would actually happen but kudos to Smith for what no doubt has been one of the hardest road to recoveries ever. Also a testimony for the unbelievable advances in modern medicine. I hope once he gets confirmed to practice he'll be another asset to Haskins and this team. And if he wants another shot at a starting job then I would be happy to trade him to the team of his choosing.

Is anybody factoring in how Alex Smith feels about it? You think he worked his ass off just for the symbolic nature and the platitudes? I'm thinking he came all the way back, and once he gets cleared by the team he's gonna wanna fight for a starting job with another team. We'll probably oblige him in helping him go to the team of his choosing if that's the case. Just sucks because I liked having him here as a mentor to Haskins.

From where I stand I just wish he'd enjoy being alive and well and don't risk another major injury at a time of his career where he's not going to suddenly become a Hall of Famer.
