Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
on sirius nfl radio both adam schein and jim miller said this would be a great deal for us, though they did say that springs, wynn, or daniels would probably be cut to facilitate the deal
This would be a great move for us. People on this site seem to be carrying along baggage from the Bruce Smith and Deon Sanders years. I keep hearing that LB is so solid for us. We had absolutely the WORST LB play last year ever. Marshall took a major step back last season and Holdman our other starter was bad. We drafted Rocky to add depth and he never saw much time. How can we count on that? We signed London to sure up the middle. Add Washingtion and Briggs on the outside with Rocky spelling those guys you have something. WE KNOW DL IS A NEED BUT WE NEED PROVEN PLAYMAKERS ON OUR DEFENSE.....AA WAS LAST YEAR AND A BAD MOVE. DON'T BURN BRIGGS FOR THE PAST. |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
What's the buzz on DC sportstalk for us that are out of the area?
LOL! Are you serious? He can play from the 3 point stance just like Briggs can.
I don't think he'd be as good of a fit in a 4-3 vs. 3-4. I think he'd struggle a bit in coverage. |

Merriman would be a DE in your system. He would do well if he was playing on Mars with me tied to his ankle. |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
He was not under contract he we forced to stay with a franchise tag. I guess that could be argued as under contract but if he gets injured this year what kind of contract will they offer him in the following year? Nothing, and thats the problem with the franchise tag. I think we argue that our team does not take care of our players and isn't that what the Bears are doing.
As per the CBA the union and the players agreed. They have all the right to franchise tag any player they choose. The player at that point has no right but to play for top tier dollars, THAT MUST SUCK. You are under contact if tagged. |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
see springs and the 6 pick for bly and denvers1,2,and 3 round picks is a good idea.although us trading for briggs might mean the end for marshall who isnt that good anymore and is old,or the end for washington, who has a big contract.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Just caught the MORT REPORT on ESPN LIVE: His take at this point was this whole deal is nothing but a whole lotta noise! NO ACTION.
Stated DREW is the best at making the MOST noise, OF COURSE. I hope this falls apart! |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Now, as for your clarified point, I addressed that one as well earlier in the thread. No franchised player is actually worth 2 first rounders. Just because the CBA says that's the price, that doesn't make the underlying player actually worth that much.
Just for the heck of it here is what some franchise players have been traded for: Sean Gilbert-Redskins to Panthers for two firsts (right?) Champ Bailey-well you know how that went down Peerless Price-Bills to Falcons for a first round pick (#23 overall) John Abraham-Jets to Falcons for a first round pick (#29 overall) |
If true, we would be getting bent over.
How would we be getting bent over by receiving a two time pro-bowler and a playmaking linebacker for 26 spots in the draft? Who's to say we wouldn't still get one of the D-lineman that we are looking at with the 31st pick? What if Washington is more hurt than they are letting on? |

Have we heard much about Washingtons recovery? IMO the 6th pick in this draft is not going to get us a player of Briggs' quality. He would start straight away, making an immediate impact and we already know how good he is. Could there also be a chance of trading Marshall for a 4th or 5th round pick? Seems we'd cut him anyway, why not try for another pick. That said, our needs are clearly D-Line. I am on the (d)fence on this trade, there are good points and bad points, i think it would all depend on what we can get for Marshall and who we took with the 31st. |

bad bad move. we need briggs like we need another hole in our heads. Keep the pick and get the best player available. End of story.

They need Marshall. He is insurance on the inside and outside. Also, he will see some decent playing time even though he may not start. |

Good point, but even vet min could be wasted money if we could trade him and get depth some where with a greater need. Seems like Rocky would be a very good back up at this point at LB. Do you think that anyone would want to trade for him? If so, what is he worth? He can play several positions and would be a good additon to alot of teams. |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Where i am going with this, is draft day trade:
If a d-lineman that we are after looks like going at 28ish, maybe Marshall could be part of a trade deal to move up. |

I agree with you 100%. This is a bad rumor that I hope was fabricated by Rosenhaus to force the Bears to make a longterm commitment to Briggs. The Skins do not need to screw with the linebacking crew. They need defensive line, offensive line and secondary improvement. |
Re: Nfl Network On Briggs And Skins
The Chicago Sun-Times reports sources said the Washington Redskins are set to pay LB Lance Briggs $20 million in guaranteed money as part of a multiyear deal that will average $7.5 million per season. It's a sweet deal for a guy who played out his rookie contract only to be hit with the franchise tag by the Bears, which means he would get $7.2 million for one year. The tricky part now for agent Drew Rosenhaus and Briggs is getting the Bears to go along with the plan. That isn't going to happen very quickly. ''We're going to take it under advisement, and if it is something we're going to pursue, we'll get back to them,'' Bears GM Jerry Angelo said. ''We are not negotiating through the media.'' Team president Ted Phillips added: ''Our position has been made pretty clear on this.''.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/315865,CST-SPT-mully28.article If the above story is true, and we do in fact trade for Briggs (two big ifs), I will puke. $7.5M per season and $20M guaranteed for a OLB? That's CB money, even in today's hyperinflated market. |

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Lance Briggs is rated higher than Joey Porter and look at the money he got. If we land him its gonna be big dollars! Do you think Dan Snyder will throw money at him if this is what he wants?

No doubt. Rearrange ROSENHAUS and you get SOURSE-N-HA. We all know spelling is not a forte of many football players so misspellings are common, I'm sure. And HA is universally accepted to mean "Joke's on you!" Pretty coincidental....and stupid. |

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
I'm watching NFL live right now, and Mort just said that IF this move w/ Briggs does happen, the Bears want to wait a while for things to quiet down. Apparently their FO is worried that letting Briggs muscle his way off the team will hurt their locker room and send the wrong message, and they are annoyed with Rosenhaus for making so much noise. Mort says there is "a chance" the deal could happen before the draft.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
why are signing bonuses allowed in the NFL? Intead of just raising the cap

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Kiper chimes in:
Kevin(Las Vegas,NV): If the Briggs trade does happen, what should Chicago do with that pick? Trade/move up/move down/ select Landry? Mel Kiper: What I think they would do, if they ended up at No. 6, they would look to get out of that spot, because their needs don't really fit that pick. I don't think at that point, there would be that intriguing of a player. Everyone talks about Landry being the best defensive player in the draft...but whoever's picking 6th (Bears or Redskins) would look to move down out of that spot. Goose (Chicago): Mel, put some odds on a Briggs to Washington deal actually getting done? Mel Kiper: It's right now a possibility, because it makes sense for both teams. The Redskins have a recent history of de-emphasizing the draft. They're going for the big splash and Briggs is a Pro Bowl entity. They traded up to get Rocky McIntosh and now, they'd be discarding him and putting him in a backup role. He's poised to be a starter and now you're going to go out and get Briggs. I don't have a problem with getting Briggs, but what about McIntosh? Now, he'd be a backup again. The Redskins already have a guy in McIntosh ready to fill that role and if they go get Briggs is an upgrade, but you're giving up the 6th pick of the draft. If the Bears keep Briggs, he will likely sit out most of the season. On paper, the trade would serve both parties well. I just question the Redskins not having any young players come in via the draft. They don't have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th-round pick this year, remember. That McIntosh trade can't be lost in all of this. They gave up a 2nd-round pick in this draft and a 6th-rounder last year to get him. And now all of a sudden, he's going to be pushed to a backup role. I would understand the trade more from the Bears standpoint than the Redskins' standpoint. |

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Maybe someone like Longtimefan can speak to this point, but I don't understand this notion that we've recently "de-emphasized the draft" Don't we have a history dating back to the days of George Allen of employing this "picks for vets" philosophy? That's nearly 40 years. I suppose that's recent, maybe.
And is the problem, if you choose to call it that, then that Snyder is trying to relive the glory years of back when he was a fan by employing the same strategy? |
you're pretty cool.
you got me! *sigh... i'll go back to my homework... |
Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
This one is puzzling, at least to me. LB is a fairly deep position for us. Briggs is a great player, but can we afford to pay him $20 mil guaranteed (which is what I heard on SportsTalk 980 this afternoon)? That could mean that some more cap casualties are coming -- such as P. Daniels and R. Wynn -- that would leave us even shorter on the D line. The Skins have kinda let it be know that they aren't crazy about the highly rated D linemen in the draft (Branch, Adams, etc.), so maybe they have someone (or more than one someone) ID'd in the vicinity of the 31st pick. This COULD be a good deal if we can also shore up the D line. Does anyone see a trade involving Rocky McIntosh if this deals goes down?
