I think it's safe to say the coaches made the right call in keeping Redd over this guy.
Looks like Yahoo finally removed Peterson from the Can't Cut List.
Man, if the Vikings end up cutting him(in real life) because of child abuse, that'll be a huge stain on his all-time great resume. I wonder if the public noise would ever get to the point where he would actually be banned from the Hall? Off-field actions aren't supposed to play a part in the voting, but if the public outcry gets bad enough, who knows? |

The same way PSU fans defended (and still do) Joe Paterno. These people don't give two fucks about child abuse unless it impacts their own family. In fact, chances are they don't give a fuck about anything unless it's about them. It's the "ME" generation and our politicians are leading the way. |
Re: Around the League: Week 2
So how do the NBA , MLB , MLS , Pro Golf ,NHL , how do these groups handle the same problems ?
The problem starts with society , not the NFL or Roger Goodell .
I almost hate to say it but for the most part it seems to be a much more common problem in the NFL. Most likely from sheer numbers seeing as how you have ~60 players under contract at any given time on 32 teams. Compare that to a league like the NBA where you have 15 players per team on 29 squads. As far as the NBA is concerned their most high profile case right now is Greg Oden who hasn't seemed to have been formerly suspended but by the same token hasn't been signed by anyone so take that for what its worth. Though it should be mentioned that Oden admitted to punching his victim to police. So we'le see how that goes. Judge grants Greg Oden delay in domestic violence case - ESPN
In the arrest report, Oden told police he had "punched her in the face" during an argument that had "gotten out of control."
The NHL's poster child for this dometic violence crusade is none other than former Cap Varlamov whose case seems to fall in that Big Ben category of something happened but we're not entirely sure what the hell it was. Semyon Varlamov, Avalanche goalie, sees charges against him dropped - The Denver Post Regardless its a cluster. Being called a wife beater or child abuser is among the worst labels you can assign to a human being. Its just below the next tier of rapist and pedophile. So on one hand it shouldn't be taken lightly. However the NFL hasn't exactly shown urgency when dealing with clear cut evidence. For example: -Rice admitted to punching his fiance even before the tape was released to the public. - Greg Hardy who was found guilty of assault back in July, has yet to be disciplined by the league. - Peterson has admitted to striking his child and photos of the aftermath regarding the childs injuries have been released. In short forget the cases within the he said-she said Bermuda triangle. We're talking about inaction on cases with clear cut evidence that have not been dealt with by the league in a timely manner. If the league can't handle the lay ups, how can they be expected to handle the more complicated cases? |

It's not just the fans... the NCAA quietly lifted most of the sanctions again PSU the day after the Peterson stuff broke. Good timing on their part. As much as everyone crows about the importance of morals, few seem to actually stand by them. Especially when money is involved. |

So many organizations seem to withhold taking basic action until they start to look at moral issues as business decisions. Does XYZ corporation really support gay rights, sure so long as it helps the bottom line and protects us from litigation. Really you guys can't decide to do that without thinking about cash flows and income statements? Do we really need a chart to decide what to do? You would think that the perps being protected in these situations were on the verge of curing AID's or Cancer. Like if we could just hold off for a little bit on exposing Sir Rapes-a-lot we can save all these people. |

Glad somebody mentioned this. To say the NFL has a domestic abuse/child abuse problem sounds silly. Society has one. I know we have to bring the nfl into the conversation as far as what their stance is, etc. However some people (not necessarily on the WP) make it seem like their is a genetic link between football players and abuse?!? |

That it in itself leads to being placed in sticky situations. Our beloved team isn't without its own controversial issues and list of players that have done a variety of morally outrageous things from DUIs to accusations of abuse. Hell, we picked up a guy that went to jail for killing someone while driving drunk. We picked up Larry Johnson after four arrests for domestic violence. While it was something many mentioned, again it wasn't something that caused outrage... Fred Davis had issues while on the team. I'm sure there's plenty more. |

An eye-opening development: Nike stores in Twin Cities have pulled all Adrian Peterson merch from shelves. Nike. So you're already looking at 3 sponsors making moves or making statements. That's a surefire way to get the NFL's attention. The irony here is that Nike doesn't support child abuse, yet they support exploiting children in 3rd world countries that work in bad conditions for low pay. |

They don't care unless we care, and then only if the moral outrage costs them money. If nobody cares, it's business as usual. Dollar above all. And then, when they do get caught, the apology isn't,"oh man, we've learned the error of our ways." It's, "oh man, we're sorry we got caught." |

I think the money gives the victim more reason to hide the abuse than to falsely accuse a NFL player. Especially now that careers are at stake. A silent victim can receive a lot of compensatory pay but if the accused suddenly has no income then what does a fake victim gain? |

I still think it was Ziggy Wilf that reversed the decision. He had already lost his Raddison sponsor and then when Anheiser/Busch comes out and makes a statement, well it doesn't take long to understand these guys respond to bottom lines and nothing else. Notice the Panthers did the same thing. I have respect for Jerry Richardson though, you can tell this has really bothered him because he actually got on the podium. (and broke down) I think the Panthers just wanted to give Hardy the due process he's deserved, and that's understandable when you don't have the tangible evidence like we saw with the Rice case. |
