Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
I hated the champ trade when it was made, but I think portis was a big part of Gibbs' success in 05 & 07 and a cornerstone of the team. However, look at that trade now & you still see how Denver got the best of us. Champ is still a great cb, we're overpaying an old, slow CP who has thrown his coach under the bus, and they got a 2nd round pick.

Champ is still very solid but not at the top of his game anymore. What did that #2 pick become? |
To tell you the truth, I wouldnt mind seeing the skins trade Portis for Merriman straight up. Isn't he up for FA this offseason???? Easy pickins for D. Snyder there........
Then, go ahead and replace Orakpo with Merriman, and let Orakpo stay at defensive end, his natural kick some ass position. Damn, just thinking about it, this could do absolutely nothing but strengthen the hell out of our already vicious front seven. Let Orakpo get this season under his belt, helping out and refining his speed and agility. Then bring in the young and very talented Merriman, who should carry along with him a chip on his shoulder the size of Barry Bonds head. Give them the preseason to gel, and currently in the NFL, I do not see another defensive unit, at least another front seven, that I would rather have, hands down. Just think of it, a quicker, stronger Orakpo with an NFL season already under his belt, w00 h00!!!!!! He could really find his niche with that lineup right there. Man, I wish that D. Snyder would actually do the above. The more I think about it, the more that it makes so much sense, other than the fact that the Chargers might not want to let him go. I also, for that front seven, wouldn't be TOO much against trading Someone like a Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly and a 2011 4th rounder for Merriman, which actually sounds like a fairly feasible deal. Then we could just part ways with some underacheiving waste of roster space, and put Marko Mitchell next to Moss, and let him shine like we all know he can, and will! The Chargers might like and actually utilize a receiver like D. Thomas, and the lack of an OLine and QB on our side could be the reason D. Thomas hasn't performed worth a shit yet. Well, at least that would be our explanation, right????!!!! Merriman Fletcher R. McIntosh Orakpo Haynesworth Golston Carter ----- I am starting to drool -----------------
This is ridiculous. Why take on another big salary. Do you think Merriman would sign cheap? If you get rid of Portis or any other good player on the decline... it should be for picks and not more salary. Plus wouldn’t we take a hit for Portis salary and the new player’s salary too. |

As I said, it is amazing how much the fans think like Snyder. |
Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
Merriman has 18 tackles, 7 assists and 2 sacks this year. This guy is over rated and it would not surprise me to see him out of the league in the next year or 2.

Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
I do not want Merriman. Now, having said that I believe that his lack of production this season is due more to his knee than his lack of ability. I can easily see him being completely healthy and rehabilitated next season. I would not want to be the guy to take a chance on that though.
As far as trading Portis for another veteran... the name of the game is trade a veteran for picks. This is not baseball or wine, football players do not get better with age. |
Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
The Portis-Bailey trade was one of those trades where the Skins' hands were sort of tied and factors above and beyond football came into play.
Still, we've gotten (at least) five years and two playoff appearances from Portis. That's not bad for a running back in this day and age. |

Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
I have that Portis-Bailey trade in one of my exam's questions for our online Madden Franchise league. In my opinion, the Broncos won the trade because you don't find another good CB. Portis is a great running back, but most RBs don't stay good very a long time.

Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome
The guy acutally needs to participate in practice. He's also what 35 years old, maybe his knee's are done.

Lets address the O line first otherwise we are not going to have much luck running the ball.
If the Redskins win the next three games I want your screen names changed to Tony Homo for a week. Any takers? Y'all could be Tony Homo 1, 2, and 3. If they lose one of those games my screen name can be changed to Jason Campbell sux for a week. How about it? Since y'all have so much confidence in the Broncos bwahahahaha, just a new coach that just got figured out (McDaniel and Zorn, same script new episode). Cowboys 22nd rank defense, hell Tampa Bay messed up their defensive stats, according to my Cowboy fan co-worker. The dirty birds????!!! I mean really. Y'all seem to forget these are the Redskins. They lose to teams they should beat, and beat teams they shouldn't beat. Been that way since Napolean met Josephione (aka Vinny).
I want to bet but instead of 1 week I want it to be permanent!! :cool-smil |
